Good point on having a load in the vehicle, running the AC, and going up a hill being a challenge for the 2.5 L.

Living up North here in NH, I hardly use an AC. In fact it's probably the farthest thing from my mind today. This global warming we're experiencing is darn cold. :-)

Nice weather to me means breaking out the Firebird, and removing the roof. Performance car for the nice weather and a safe, reliable vehicle for the winter and such. - X3?
  • saugataksaugatak Member Posts: 488
may have same engine, but I believe the X5 3.0 has much shorter gearing, which partially makes up for the difference in weight. Of course the X5's gas mileage suffers.

our x3 is awaiting transport. hopefully it'll be here by mid febuary. cant wait..

and lots of posts to read and respond to...

funny you should suggest that kernick, I was thinking of getting a small car as a cheap runabout besides the x3
About buying a performance car I said a "little bit of power" not "give me a chest beating, grandma scaring, superturbocharging vehicle from hell!!".
  • jjmanjjman Member Posts: 77
just means more discounts for me :-))

the x3 is all about compromises but I have to disagree with kernick that to get handling you need a car. The reason I am buying the x3 is because it handles better than most cars and I ain't talking about camrys but cars like acura tl and infiniti g35. I know for sure it stops better than them! 165feet 70-0! C&D magazine

you should really test drive the g35 and tl before you make statements like the X3 can outhandle g35 or TL.
  • jjmanjjman Member Posts: 77
    i don't make uneducated comments
my brother owns a g35 and I have test drove a TL
neither handled as well or had as good a steering feel as the x3

Over the weekend, I went over to 3 dealers to get the quotes. The max I was getting was 1000$ off MSRP. I think I can do 1500$ if I tried harder. The only options that I added were steptronic, moonroof, on-board computer & navigation system.

Though, I am going to buy 2.5L I test drove the 3.0L. The ride was not a wow experience in fact I did not enjoy it at all. I expected the handling to be closer to a 3 series sedan but it wasn't.

I was originally considering 325xi but I heard that they may stop producing that in the future since x3 will be competing. But the main reason I moved to x3 was the price difference, just 2K and you are getting more room. Though 3 series drive is unbelievable I cannot justify spending 35K on a compact car.

The things that I like about x3 are
    Moonroof
    Safety features
    xDrive
    price

    Dislikes
dashboard, it is not like the 3 series
handling, not by any means closer to 3 series

saugatak - a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S model would dust all of these vehicles, on or off road. It is possible.
  • saugataksaugatak Member Posts: 488
yes a 450 HP engine will make up for a lot, but correct me if i'm wrong, isnt the x3 3.0 a 225 HP engine, while the G35 is 260 HP and the TL 270 HP.

i just can't see any scenario (other than icy roads) where an X3 would dust the G35 or TL.

    lakshman,

What did you expect the X3 to drive like? As a current M3 ('02) and former 328i Sport ('99) driver, I think the X3 comes way closer to replicating the 3 series drive than could reasonably be expected. No, it doesn't drive like an M3 (not many vehicles do) or quite like a 3 series sedan, but given the extra room and weight, it comes admirably close to the 3 series; the vehicle drives exceptionally well for what it is. I, for one, will barely miss my M3 when I sell it for the X3 now that space and foul weather capability are more important than pure performance. But thanks to the BMW engineers, I can have a vehicle that serves all of my needs with the smallest imaginable sacrifice in performance.

On engine, I think the X3 is too heavy for the 2.5 liter.

On price, you should be able to get at least $1,500 off MSRP. I got much more off than that.

    kdshapiro,

Just a clarification, Porshe doesn't make a Cayenne Turbo S - it's the Twin Turbo or S, with a huge difference in price. Of course, even the S is very, very expensive.

The type of performance I'd like to know about if anyone has it is how X-Drive works. I'd like to know if the system can send power to an individual wheel, if there is only 1 with traction? Does the X3 use viscous differentials, or is it all electronic sensors?

In my few days with the X3 my biggest complaint would be the intrusive xDrive. If BMW had an option to switch the SAV to permanent RWD, I'm positive I would have enjoyed the vehicle more.

Too often the xDrive would adjust the power management while cornering. Strange that BMW would design their xDrive and not give us an off-option.

But thanks to the BMW engineers, I can have a vehicle that serves all of my needs with the smallest imaginable sacrifice in performance.

A drop of several seconds in 0-60 time and handling that's several miles per hour slower through slalom is small?

If the X3 did 60 in say 5.5 seconds and pulled 1 mph or 0.03g's less, I'd say it was a small sacrifice going from the M3 to the X3.

    saugatak,

Rated horsepower doesn't tell the whole story. First, BMW is notorious for under-representing horsepower. Second, BMW's consistently outperform competitor vehicles with much bigger helpings of horsepower. I went from a Volvo S80 (hated it; the worst, rashest purchase decision I ever made) with 268 hp to a 328i with 193 hp and the BMW was a much faster car on the straights, and could obviously obliterate the S80 in the twisties.

I'm not saying the X3 will outperform a G35 or TL. In fact, I think the comparison is just plain silly. But, let's all be clear that horsepower isn't the be all, end all. Neither is 0-60, etc, as there really aren't any stats that can capture the essence of a vehicle. BMWs have historically won comparison tests based on what many have called an 'X Factor' (which I tend to think is actually how weight distribution and balance equate to exceptional handling).

Thanks for the reply. I did not get a chance to take the x3 on ramp or on high speed. I may find the pleasure in driving when I try it out on the highway. One thing that was strikingly different was when I did not feel one with the car like I did with the 3 series sedan. I felt like sitting on top of the car instead of inside.

I cannot afford 6K extra for 3.0L. Anyway, I will be ordering mine sometime this week if I get 1500$ off.

For people wondering why I am ordering without actually driving one... I just totaled my car and I would rather pay for the options instead of paying to the rental car company.
  • kkl3kkl3 Member Posts: 7
    Blueguy,

What does the word 'imaginable' mean to you? This board is too cluttered by people who want extra cargo room and foul weather capability without any sacrifice in performance . . . oh, and can I get that for the price of a Geo Metro, please?

No, the M3 and X3 are not in the same stratosphere in terms of performance (or practicality). But the BMW engineers have put the X3 in the same conversation as the 3 series.

Sorry if my post was confusing to you.

The BMW AG published brochure (may be different than north america version) state that the model logo (i.e., 2.5i, 3.0i)can be removed as a free option! Has anybody queried their dealer about this. I will and will report back in this thread. (Yes, I'm getting the 2.5i but I'm not concerned about the smaller engine, less writing on the outside of a car, the better it looks...unless it's the flying propellor of course.

Also, the brochure lists the roof rack as an option, which would clean up the X3's lines even further. Trust me, I've piled everything in the world on top of cars, and these racks look to be virtually worthless, also HIGH potential to scratch the massive sunroof. Anybody have answers?
  • jjmanjjman Member Posts: 77
I said outhandle not outperform because basically the x3 is 500 lbs heavier I don't expect it to blow by the TL or g35 but when you throw it on the curvy roads the x3 will make you forget that it is an SUV. When on a test drive I suggest you guys try to do some turning instead of just driving straight otherwise why bother with a bmw, just get a lexus

    er. Subaru WRX.

I had a chance to participate in the Ultimate Drive at Dodger Stadium this past Saturday. Professional driving instructors, X3's, short classroom session, time trial, etc.

Basically, they taught us and showed us how to push the X3 to it's limit. The hesitation and dis-belief I had doing what they wanted me to do and the feeling and rush after doing it reinforced my buying decision. This car GRIPS the road and corners unbelievably!

Other cars in the X3's class probably have a nicer interior and smoother ride, but driving excitement is my priority, and this car absolutely delivers!

Last point: I DO consider the X3 a luxury SUV. The nice thing about BMW (and others) is that they let you custom tailor your car any way you want it. I happened to custom tailor mine to the tune of a luxury SUV, with materials and options that put it on a par with the MDX, X5, FX, ML, and others.

    tponchak:
Yes, you can custom tailor your car the way you want it.But don't try and color coordinate the interior because all you can get is gray carpet.Custom away with all the items that you want and then add up the total for them. Then look at the X-5 and notice what items are standard on the X-5. Electric seating on both front seats. Homelink, alarm system, electric tilt and telescoping wheel adjustment, rain sensing wipers, cruise control, onboard computer, fog lights and metalic paint. Add the moon roof and you'll pay $36,000 for a better SUV with a 3.0 engine and X-Drive running gear.
Wait until you try and lock the X-3 and you don't know if it did lock or not. There is no audible or visual notice. Just add the alarm systen for about $800, then you'll have the beeb and lights flash.
At least the X-5 has a comfortabe rear seat cushion and 2 cup holders. It also has interior door pulls in the arm rests. Not the poorly designed awkward, off center door bars.
I still feel that the X-3 is a young, sporty women's vehicle or maybe an "A" feminine male's choice!!! Buy a real vehicle, not a "cute" little SUV.

"I still feel that the X-3 is a young, sporty women's vehicle or maybe an "A" feminine male's choice!!! Buy a real vehicle, not a "cute" little SUV."

It's a SAV that can run rings around other vehicles. My guess is as production ramps up, more interior choices will be available. Same as the 3-series. I don't need a "he-man" vehicle, although I own one. I don't "need" to spend the extra money for an X5.

I find it interesting that you consider the X5 to be a "real vehicle" and point to such things as rear seat cushion, cup holders, and door pulls which are among the more practical items my wife generally looks for when we purchase a new vehicle. Don't get me wrong. I think the X5 is a fine vehicle, if you want that size.

Posts like #656 don't even deserve a response. There are a few on this board, and the other X3 boards that are just trying to start a flame war. They are obviously not considering buying the X3, can't afford it or aren't old enough to drive yet. So why are they wasting their time here? I can't imagine wasting my time going to the the Lexus board and trashing the 330 (a fine car, just not my cup of tea).

These people are kind of sad. It's best to just ignore the silly posts, and get on to a real discussion about the X3.

Most people that have ordered or are in the market for an X3 have also looked at the X5 and other SUVs Whatever they choose boils down to personal preferences and priorities. They each have their attributes and shortcomings.

If we just ignore these stupid posts, hopefully they will get bored and go away, and we can have an informative discussion on the X3

Trying to compensate for something? i understand that you hate the x3, g35, crv, freelander, rav4,vue, outlander, and escape(they all belong to the same class and all are cute little SUV) but bmw is targeting young customers with the x3. try showing this car to your son. pretty sure he'll like it...:-)peace...

it's been 2 months since i first wrote a post in this message board. frankly i'm beginning to get bored. i was hoping by this time all the people who hated the x3 from the begining have already made their points...OK you hate the damn car. but when the people who like the x3 started a nice post about the car, these people keep on popping up just to give criticisms that they shared in the previuos 660 posts.
i ordered the x3. i want to know how others faired when they ordered their x3's. i want to know about the options, how it is priced, and look for opinions on things such as alarm systems if its better to get it installed from a dealer or get an aftermarket. all of the interesting suggestions that x3 buyers have to say.
if i hate the freaking car i aint gonna dwell on it, i'll just move on with my life. i want to see new posts that werent argued upon for the last 2 months...

    thank you...

I would like to know since that other person said that there were 6 sitting on a dealers lot and I haven't heard anything from my dealer

For some people, the X3 isn't going to be as good as:

    1. An M3 if you like sporty;
    2. A Lexus if you like cushy;
    3. A Chrysler Town + Country if you like roomy;
    4. A used Buick LeSabre if you like cheapie.

For each person it's different depending on one's positions, predispositions and needs. So can we just leave it at that? If you'd prefer a Subaru, or an Aviator, or an RX330, or a go-kart, have at it - that's your opinion, and your right to your own opinion as a free individual - good luck + godspeed.

In the meantime, has anybody been able to confirm inventory levels > base demo models at any dealers not in CA? Has there been confirmation that CA dealers do have inventory ready for drive-off sales? Has anyone who pre-ordered gotten delivery? And, finally, has anyone who pre-ordered been notified of anything other than 'everything's moving on time as expected'?

    Thanks...

Based on the previous advices I got the price 1500 off MSRP. I am going to be ordering X3 2.5 tomorrow. I am pretty excited about the xDrive and the Navigation system. I wish I had one for all this snow storm in NJ. Anyway, I have some questions.

    1. Where can we get information about the navigation system? I could not get enough in the bmw website. I heard the previous cd based system was ranked pretty low.

    2. Is the alarm system necessary? I see that the 2.5 is prewired for the alarm system but it costs 500$ extra for the installation and part. Please give your inputs. One of my friends who recently bought 325i said that adding alarm system does not reduce the premium since the standard security system good enough.

As always, I appreciate any inputs.

    Thanks.

"One of my friends who recently bought 325i said that adding alarm system does not reduce the premium since the standard security system good enough."

I saved 15% by installing the alarm. It already paid for itself. However, there are people who buy the alarm electronics and install it. Save a few bucks on labor.

Everything I've heard about the quality of the German nav systems makes me shy away. Plus, I can't see spending $1,800 on it. However, I've heard very good things about the Garmin iQue3600 Palm. The beauty of it is that it's a fully-functional Palm with built-in GPS navigation. From what I've heard, the navigation blows away any of the German automaker nav systems. Plus, you can link directions to any address info you have stored in the PDA. Go to the Garmin web site to see a demo.

I've been posting in this forum since near the beginning and it amazes me how cynics and pessimists such as you and others spend sooooo much of your time bashing the X3. For a vehicle that you obviously will never own, I can't believe the attention you give this car.

Like I told Saugatak before we straightened him out, the more time you spend making negative comments, the more I see that as a positive.

For example, I don't like the Suburu Forester XT. I'll never consider purchasing this vehicle. As a result of my dis-taste for this car, I have never contributed one single post about it (until now:)), because I don't care about it. So, we see right through you, bmwbob27.

Thanks for your support, ulep, kdshapiro, mamgt, harplayr, tps3, and rudikamp.

By the way, bmwbob27, which BMW or BMW's do you own?

    Lakshman,

I was told by my dealer that it was just like the one in the X5. If you find out anything please post as I ordered my X3 with the Nav.

I currently use an HP Ipaq for Nav. There is a good forum http://www.pocketpcpassion.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=9e8961e65- 9a8802814c1d8f67791254f&forumid=39

that is dedicated to palm and pocket pc nav solutions. Plam or Pocket PC nav systems are ok, but the screens are small, and mounting is a problem. I use a IPAQ with a Navman receiver and TOMTOM software. I also sometimes use Destinator software.
  • lakshmanlakshman Member Posts: 47
kdshapiro thanks for your input about the alarm system. I will check with my insurance company.

kkl3 thanks for telling about iQue3600. I have been wanting to buy garmin iQue3600 for quite sometime now since I would be able to use it on both of my cars. However, I read several posts about mounting problem and also the glare. I believe it has to be mounted for proper reception. We also have to use the computer to load the maps into the system. We have to spend on several necessary accessories(memory, car kit etc.). Finally, we pay about one third of the price but I think we get what we pay for. Also, I like the idea of screen closing when we don't need it.

harplayr thanks for giving the link. I will post if I find anything. I am surprised that you ordered with nav though you have a hp ipaq for nav.

By the way, there was a pretty good comparison of standalone and PDA based nav systems in Consumerreports not too long ago. Garmin standalone was at the top, but I'm not sure if the latest PDA based system from Garmin was included. I am also considering a portable as I travel alot and could use it in other vehicles as well. I'll have to dig up the report.
  • glenberkglenberk Member Posts: 14
The X3 Navigation system is basically identical to that currently installed in the Z4. The display and its tilt/hide apparatus is exactly the same as what gets put in the dash on the Z4. On the Z4, the dvd drive is behind and between the seats. In the X3, the dvd drive is located in the center console under the armrest. Both the Z4 and X3 use essentially the same radio in the dash and electronics behind the scenes to run the navigation system.
  • scotth6scotth6 Member Posts: 43
    I ordered An X3 3.0 with a sticker of $46 with most options except the navigation system. I have a 2002 M3 convertible and a 2003 M3 coupe.
I do not like the navigation system in my M3 and rarily use it, it malfunctioned and the entire unit was replaced under warranty. Maybe its my generation but I though it was a little difficult or maybe its just hard to shift a 6 speed and read a map. Anyway, my son who is 16 has no problems with it and uses it a lot.
My X3 should be delivered in the next two weeks and I was wanting to get the Sirrus radio option. Has anyone asked their dealer about it?
I believe its $12 a month but the radio upgrade is $500 and your X3 must be prewired which is $150-175 (mine will be prewired). I guess you guys in California and New York actually have stations to listen to but in South Carolina the pickins are slim for radio stations worth listening to.
Also as I have said in previous posts, I am trading in a 2001 X5 3.0 because the X3 has handling, better gas milage, better looks and I actually like the interior even if it isn't quite as nice as an X5. A 3 series interior isn't as nice as a 5 series so what is the big deal. The people who don't want a BMW should find another message board.
  • lfeiwellfeiwel Member Posts: 10
Apparently, on X5 and new 5s, there is a jack to access music players (like Ipod) that enables playing thru the stereo, and using controls on steering wheel.
does anyone know if it will be avail on the x3? and where (glove box, or back of car or ???)
  • ulepulep Member Posts: 63
Yes it is available on the x3 as an option. i just dont know where it is located.
  • mark_lpmark_lp Member Posts: 28
I looked at the X3 at the autoshow and the DVD nav drive was located in the rear cargo area just in front of the left tail light assembly. It looks like there is more room back there for what I dont know. The dealer thinks the cd changer that fits in the 5 series glove box will be the model that goes in the center console for the X3.
  • glenberkglenberk Member Posts: 14
I know the area in the back left that you are talking about. My salesperson and I have looked around behind the rear inside panels several times. The large X3 brochure states that the CD changer goes between the seats in the console. But we thought (maybe incorrectly) that the dvd navigation unit fit there too. Why? Because my X3 2.5i withouth PP would normally not--again not--come with a center armrest between the front seats. But when we added the gps nav system the bmw order computer added the center console armrest for free...no charge. We figured the center armrest was being added in order to cover the dvd unit inside. But I rather have the dvd unit in the back rear as you state. And I'll have the armrest as well!
  • mamgtmamgt Member Posts: 67
ulep: You say it is available on the x3 as an option. Is that a factory or dealer installed option? I missed that one entirely.

I quest I should thank you for the underlined sarcastic inquiry as to how many and which BMW have you owned???
You really know how to hurt a guy. You made me count up how many BMW's that I have bought since 1986. On 1/17/04, I purchased number 10 and 11, if you can count a Mini Cooper as a BMW,(which it is). I bought a 2004 X-5 and a 2004 325 Wagon. And tonight I brought home a 2003 325 sedan for my daughter to consider purchasing. I dropped off the wagon to have the homelink installed and program the keys and locks and was given a 325 to take home. You see my user name is not a cliche. I am a real BMW believer and enthusiastic about their vehicles. Hope that satisfies your curiosity. (sarcastic)
    jiman:
As of 5:00p.m. this evening the 6 X-3's were still available to purchase. They had traded 1 of the black ones to another dealer and received a silver in exchange. This dealership has not even had any negotiating offers to consider and only 3 orders have been taken. These 6 X-3's have been there for 10 days now. They say that there are many people test driving the demo and looking over the other demo in the showroom but no real serious buyers. They would consider at least $1,500 off of MSRP if it was offered!!
I waited with great enthusiasm for over a year for the X-3. I went to San Francisco on the first day and drove to Sacramento on the next day to be the first to drive the X-3. I drove it for over 20 miles and about 30 minutes. I then placed my name on 1 of the six open allocations for January production and February deliver. I requested one of the 2.5's and in black exterior with black interior. It was the only option for my wife and I as the bumpers are so big and black that black exterior would hide them. The same with the gray carpeted interior. I was impressed with the driving and handling with great agility but very disappointed with the size and interior appointments. The cost was also a factor. I then drove the X-3 in Marin 3 separate times. The last on Saturday before I bought the X-5. I had previously canceled my order with Sacramento. I just re affirmed my previous feelings that the X-3 is just too over priced for what you receive. Believe me, I understand other posters, that this is MY OPINION. If you like it then go for it. After all it is a BMW and you can't go wrong. It just is not for me.

You made me count my BMW's and now I'm thinking of how much money these purchases and sales have cost me$$$ Thanks for putting me into depression.

My X3 will be my 9th BMW since 1995. Regarding the gray interior of the X3 I can tell you that my X5 that I am trading had the silver interior and I will never do a silver interior again. Dirt and wear shows on the seats, carpet, and especially in the back where you carry things. My 2001 330cic also had the silver interior and it showed dirt and the silver leather was hard to keep clean. I ordered the X3 with the Terracota seats which includes black carpet and dash to hide dirt. I have had several Grand Cherokee's in the past and learn ed not to ever again get a light color interior in a sport ulitity. My 2003 M3 has red leather and black carpet and never shoes dirt or wear.
Regarding the X3 and the bumpers being black its no different than the X5 and nobody complains about it. I did get a black exterior but lived with a silver X5 for 31/2 years with black molding all over the lower part of the vehicle.

I agree. I look back upon my purchase of premium Hondas and Toyotas as depressing. I could have saved big $$$ by buying cheapo American cars.

I got $1350 off msrp for the x3 2.5 with steptronic, moonroof & nav. I hope I also get the arm rest with the nav. as glenberk did.

The sales person was okay but had initially added advertising fee & carpet to the invoice. But for the final price carpet was not included. I would like to know if any of you are getting carpet as standard. I understand it is added by the dealer and it costs $125.

Outside color is black, I like black and secondly the bumper and door handles are black anyway. I chose black interior as the sand is too bright when we sit inside and it does not go with the console.

After the sales, the sales person admitted that the sales on x3 was not as expected. He was saying why else would they give a discount on a vehicle that is brand new. He also said he made 100$ in the deal.

I hope to get the production number so I can login to the owners circle and get the hire dvd!

Does anyone know how long it takes to get the production number after booking?
