My 98Avalon is having troubles and the mechanic told me to look for a new car. I am considering a new camry . How does a four cylinder stack up to my 98 Avalon which had six cylindars, in terms of accelerating when you are getting on to a highway? Any other things I should know about?

Just go to a dealer and take one for a spin. Choose a section of a suitable highway and do a kickdown check (aka flooring it) at around 20-30 MPH. The salesperson with me the last tine I did that almost panicked even thought he was told what was about to happen. Long story short, acceleration of any current 4 cylinder sedan should be the least of your worries. The rest you can Google.

That's right - really works. And besides, a sedan is not a sports car, it does what it can.

I test drove a mazda 6. Nice feel to the car but I have one question. Why is the insurance so much higher for this car?

Kind of off topic here. Try HERE for a discussion of lowering your insurance rates. Maybe some other members could answer this question. I personally can't think of a reason.
