Thinking of driving parts of the Alaska Highway. Has anyone purchased headlight covers and/or hood protectors for their '03-'04 4Runner? How have they performed?
I last drove it in April '03 (trip #6 or so) and I don't bother with headlight protectors any more since it's mostly all paved now. I do manage to get chips in my windshield so a hood deflector may help. But even driving the Cassiar or the Dempster in the 90's, I didn't bother with any protective stuff.
You should grab a Milepost if you haven't already.
I got my V8 runner in the spring and am now finally towing some trailers, but one thing i find is that the toyota ball mount is rather loose inside the receiver. I am not sure if it is because the ball mount is a bit shorter then normal or just that the 'rust' hasnt built up to what i am accustomed too.
The ball mount is definately shorter then normal, i guess to accomodate the spare tire that would be in the way of a regular length bar.
Do any of you that tow find the toyota ball mount to be loose inside the receiver?
Try going to Cabelas.com. They have a product called the Anti-Rattle Hitch Bracket. You won't have any more rattling and it only costs $11.99 + shipping.
Has anyone used a TRD Oil filter for a 2003 4Runner V8 and if so what model#? My Dealer refused to put on a 00602-90915-004 they said it was the wrong filter however TRD say's it is the correct filter. Some web sites say that is the correct # others say it should be 00602-90915-007 does anyone have any experience with this? Dennis
yes it can be done without an amp, and there is an adaptor for your steering wheel so the controls will work, to bad you dont live in cali i would help you out and sent you to my buddies shop i use to work for. (quit for personal reasons) he did my 4runner 03, dont have the steering wheel controls but i know he has it and can do it. keep looking. its out there
I read your post and I decided to buy the Homelink system in partznet as you said. The price was exactly as you mentioned but when I was trying to install it I found put the there was not instruction manual to program the homelink? so where can I get the operating manual?? it was not shipped in my homelink system???
Where can I find the programming instructions or the operating manual.
I don't have ready access to the vehicle operating manual at the moment, but in my 2003 manual I just looked in the index for "garage door" and found the instructions for programming.
Perhaps others can check their 2004 or 2005 manuals in case this information has been moved.
Yes, the directions are in the same place in the manual. If you have a newer "rolling code" opener the process is a bit more difficult since it involves a ladder to reach the control unit of the opener and you have 30 seconds to complete the programing.
Oh BTW; My dealer matched the Partznet price of $76.00 for the Homelink and the Partznet price on the Driver's Side Assist Handle w/Plugs. I ordered it on Saturday and got it on Monday.
I would like to add the Limited sun visor with the illuminated vanity mirror to the passenger side of my '04 Sport Edition 4Runner, and also the electrochromatic rearview mirror. I found a vendor to supply both, but can't tell how hard it would be to get power to them. Since the mirror is listed as an option for my vehicle, I think wiring for the mirror might be in place, but not for the visor. Has anyone else tried this, or have recommendations for me? I'm pretty handy, but have no clue about how to remove the headliner if that's required. Thanks!
It shouldn't be too bad running a power wire up the window post if it's not supplied from the factory. Did you try looking under the light assembly/sun glass holder? If it's not there you should be able to tap into the power for the light.
I am also looking for the rearview mirror but thru Toyota they say it's about $600.00.
Can someone please help. I have an 03 4runner with 265/70/16 tires on stock sr5 rims and would like to have a "bigger/bolder" look (like the sport or limited - I believe that they have 17 inch rims). Can someone recommend bigger tires without them looking too aggressive or without having to do a suspension lift?
I have an 04 4runner 4x4 with 4.0L v6 and 4spd auto. I want to tow a lite trailer that weighs 2200# dry with a max weight of 3150#. Will be towing in mountains about half the time. Should I add a trans cooler? Thanks
I just ordered a 2005 4Runner Sport which will arrive in April. i have made a major lifestyle change and now live at a 6 acre site in the central California mountains. My house is at the top of a plot of land which slopes at a 70 degree angle. i want to protect my house from potential fires this summer. and there are many downed trees below my house. I am contemplating getting a Warn winch (9000 lb.0) to pull up braches which I chain saw on the slope below my house. The 4Runner will have a rear trailer hitch, and I plan on attaching a winch on a receiver bracket with an aircraft-type electrical connection to my battery to winch up the cut timber. Have any of you tried this set-up, and can you give me any advice? There is an asphalt road above the slope, and i figure on parking the 4Runner on the road and winching up the downed trees.
I have a friend with a Wood-Mizer and he takes a hydraulic winch on a skid into the woods. It's easier to position than a SUV and is a pretty versatile setup. He ties the skid off on stumps and uses the 15' remote to control the log hauling so he's out of the line of fire if the cable breaks.
I'm in a grass fire area so maintaining my Survivable Space is a bit easier.
Thanks Steve, HOST for the reply to my inquiry. I'm concerned that a wood mizer, winch , and a skid, might not do too well on a 70% slope. I will await the delivery of the V-8 Sport 4X4 4Runner and hope that some other reader of this forum has had some experience with a rear-mounted winch, connected to a universal mount on a rear hitch trailer receiver. I'm also curious whether or not the VIP securiy sysem may be a value to me. I drive to work, where I have a secure parking place. I garage my vehicle at my home. I live in a very rural mountain area, but I may well park my vehicle at a trailhead and snowshoe, hike, or mountain bike from the 4Runner. Will the VIP accessory be worth it in my situation? I can still add port installed options until late March. What accessories would any of you wished that you had added, and why?
Hello Packmann, This is off of the automotive subject, but I wanted to ask you a question or two (if you don't mind). I live in the San Diego area and am looking for some land up in your neck of the woods. Can you tell me what town you are near and the cost per acre, land is going for? Additionally, is there more land available there? I'm also contemplating Oregon. My email address is yobow1@yahoo.com (that's a one after the w). Thanks and I hope to hear from you soon.
Just placed an order for my 2005 4Runner Sport; comes in about a week. Anyways, I opted for the stock toyota stereo due to the fact that I want to put my own stereo components into the vehicle. The question is, does anyone have any experience with changing out the stock stereo for an aftermarket one. My plan is to replace the stock unit with an aftermarket Double-DIN Stereo. I have measured the slot that's in the 4RUNNER, and it seems to measure 4" by 8". From what I've read, the Double-DIN aftermarket recievers measure around 4" by 7". I'm wondering if the slot behind the stock stereo is actually a Double-DIN opening with the correct dimensions, or if some sort of mounting kit will be needed to make this fit. If a kit is needed, does anyone know where one of these can be attained? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help.....
Easiest upgrade is to swap out the OE head-unit for one out of a Scion. I did and so have many others. Try searching other websites, 4runner dot org, Tundra solutions dot com for info. Scion 1804 is single disc, 1805 is 6 disc. Don't use any other Scion mdl #, these are the newer mdl's.
Have you install your Nav system yet? I have 2000 4Runner SR5 and also want to install the Nav system. How was you experience with it? Can you recommend the best solution/budget Nav system manufacture/online vendor that I should get for my SUV?
Ended up buyign the OEM 05 Chromatic Mirror from my toyota place... Very easy install... took about 30 min - the dealer said it would take 3 hours.
Also ordered the homelink from Conicelli (Online) for $70.00. The unit(OEM) replaces the current overhead console. has the two lights, sunglass holder, and sunroof switch - it adds three homelink buttons. Very easy install about 10 min. dealer wanted 300.00 to install.
READING THIS FORUM HAS REALLY PAID OFF!! THANKS EVERYONE!
We've been car shopping this week and have settled on either the SR5 4Runner or Honda Pilot. The Pilot EX-L has leather, 3rd row seat, sunroof, and LOTS of other creature comforts. In our opinion, the Pilot has the nicer interior of the two. We are willing to concede the leather in the 4Runner, however definitely want BOTH 3rd row seating as well as sunroof. From all the inventory I have seen as well as Toyota website, I just learned that you can have one or the other but not both at SR5 or Limited trim levels! How ridiculous is that?!? The only way to have both is to get an aftermarket sunroof which we're apprehensive about. Anyone have experience with an aftermarket sunroof in the 4Runner?
Packman, same question as David regarding land Can you tell me what town/area you are near and the cost, what land is going for, how you found the property(agent, ect)? Additionally, is there more land available there? My email address is skipjakk@yahoo.com Thanks.
On the new 2005 Ltd with JBL system where is a good place to get wireless headphones that work with the infrared system? Will any infrared wireless headphones work?? Thanks for the help!
Does anybody know about any type of towing mirrors available for an 04 4Runner sport. Prefer something that fits over existing mirror like CIPA makes for Ford & Chev products, but am open to ideas. So far all I have found are mirrors that are very generic and clamp onto side of car, not very attractive at ALL!
Best Buy installed a satellite radio, new reciever, and 4 new speakers in my 2004 4runner. Afterwards the heat seemed to have on setting: totally on (or else I turn it off). Could they have misconnected/damaged hoses or thermostat during the install? I know they broke my lock mechanism on a rear door, and sent me off with the 2 upfront speakers rattling in the door: they seem incompetent. Do I now go back and fight with them about this? Thanks!
I can't imagine walking away, or in your case driving away HOT, from this situation. It seems like you should return to the store and ask calmly to talk to the manager. Write down beforehand all of the problems which you found immediately after the installation. Show your list to the manager and ask what he is willing to do to make it right. I would guess that Best Buys also has a customer complaint (800) phone number. If the store manager gives you no satisfaction, call the corporate number. I would guess that the radio connection used an under-dash power source, which may interfere with the heating system. This may cause a drop in voltage which causes the solenoid controlling the heat valve to malfunction; it may send an erroneous signal to one of the computers which then reacts by keeping on the heat. In any case, the installation is unacceptable, and you should assertively (not aggressively) insist that it be made right. The door lock may simply be a wire behind the inner door covering which was not reconnected (electric locks?) and the speaker rattle may be a slight misplacement of the speakers, cured by insulating the screws from the metal of the inner door. Both are fixes which the installer should correct. I wouldn't threaten or even mention small-claims court, but that may be your recourse if Best Buys doesn't stand behind their (shoddy) work.
thanks packman. to their credit they did tell me they broke the lock and have that part on order but i had to push them to order it asap. When i drove off and heard the rattle i drove back and they then fixed that. But then a couple days later i noticed the heat (hadn't needed it for a couple days) issue. I just wanted to be sure that there was a logical connection to them messing around under the dash, which from your comments I gather there definitly is. Now I'll go fight with them about that. It gets old. My advice: AVOID BEST BUY INSTALLS.
I had my XM Satellite Radio installed at a local Circuit City and encountered no problems whatsoever. However, your experience may vary.
I agree that a dedicated car audio shop is the best place to go as they have the most knowledgeable people. I got a pretty good deal at Circuit City at the time that no one could match.
I am planning on purchasing a Pioneer AVIC-N2 for my 2003 4Runner. First does anyone have any experience with this or the AVIC-N1 unit. Second, I live in Fairfield County, Ct. and after reading how poorly the installations are at the major chains, does anyone have any installation recommendations? Thanks.
I just ordered a 2005 Sport. You can only get the 3rd row seat with a SR5 or Limited, not with a sport model. So I have a need occasionally for a 3rd row seat. I checked the parts to order and install, over $2000! It was only a $730 option. I have also look at some of the aftermarket 3rd row seats online. What I would like to do I get one seat {they split in the middle and hang on the sides} for the left side from a wrecked late model 4runnery. Any one find themselves in this same dilema?
I have a 2003 4 runner and want to know where I can get a chrome grill. I have seen them on 3 other 4 runners, but can't catch them to ask where they got thiers.
That's a great question actually. They are standard on 2005 models....so my guess would be that you might be able to get one from the dealership. I'd like to put one on my 4runner too....so if you get an answer....post it here!!
IIRC, it's only standard to certain trim(s). look up toyota's web site if you need to know specifically which trims have or not have it. I seem to remember the Sport trim is diff while Limited and SR5 are closer in appearance.
I tried to find more information today, but the dealers parts department is'nt all that great here in Oregon. I will try again tom. Will keep you posted.
The Chrome Grille is only standard on the SR5 Trim for the 2005 Model. Both the Sport Edition and Limited trims have colored grilles that correspond with the color of the vehicle.
I just took delivery of my new 2005 Sport. I was thinking of protecting the front end with something like the 3M film you mentioned in your post (#522). Just wanted to know what experiences you had with it. Does it hold up and stay put? Any discoloration? Can it be removed easily if needed? I'm just nervous about all that painted stuff up front with out any protection. I like the way it looks but I'm thinking it will get serious chips easily.
I could not tell from your message but I have a 2005 4Runner. I was wondering how I can remove the cargo shelf. I would like to install a cargo liner and need to get rid of the shelf.
I want to upgrade the basic sound system in a 2005 SR5. 1. What are the factory speakers sizes or replacement size? 2. Will the speakers fit or do I have to buy special brackets (based on what I have read the factory speaker brakets are built into the speakers.) 3. Ins and Outs of disassembling the door. 4. Location(s) of amp(s) (per your experience)? 5. ????

Thanks
Make sure you have the newest Navigation DVD. Version 4.1 is not accurate. Toyota has a Limited Service campaign for the new version, 4.2.
I am also looking for the rearview mirror but thru Toyota they say it's about $600.00.
Can you pass on the vendor name / e-mail address.
Thanks
