2009 Santa Fe rear end thump on accelleration

Upon accelleration there is a thump in the rear of my Santa Fe. Sometimes it's just one time, others it's continuous till it gets through the gears. I would say it feels like a slip but not in the tranny.

You might check bushings in the rear suspension, such as rear sway bar bushings (if the Santa Fe has a rear sway bar---can't recall offhand). Also rear strut mounts are always suspect. Last of all, the exhaust system mounts should be checked.

Do you have all-wheel drive on it?

I had a similar problem with my 2012. When coming to a stop or accelerating from a stop I was getting a "thump" (more a vibration than a sound) from the rear of the vehicle. At first I thought it was the transmission - it seemed to happen when I was going in and out of first gear.

After a long trip it got worse. At one point it started making a loud noticeable "CLUNK" and the whole car would feel like it was being pulled backwards (!). This was happening even when the transmission wasn't shifting, and it was clearly coming from the rear end.

Took it to the dealer and it turned out to be the all-wheel drive coupler. Fortunately for me it was covered under warranty. So I would have it checked out - it will only get worse as it continues to wear.
