    >It's also nice to have such a lethal vehicle with such a low police profile. No "turbo" written on the vehicle or anything. Most people probably don't even know what the "T" in "XT" is for!<

My XT proudly features a Turbo emblem, and I prefer not to think of the Forester as a "Lethal" vehicle, and I have no idea what a "Low Police Profile" is, however you might find out sooner than later? And in the 9 Months my XT has been on the road here in Miami, I have never seen another Forester, and only one other Subaru. Zooooom, you got a good price, I assume by the low Invoice price you have a M/T with no P/P, however you do have an Arm Rest, and a Cabin filtration Filter. How much was your 6/80 with a Zero deductible. Did you go for the "Gold " plan? Subaru is a stealth Brand down here, Drive Responsibly©
  • zzzzooomzzzzooom Member Posts: 5
Where do you have a turbo emblem? Was it a dealer add-on? Does anybody else have one? I'm away from my FXT, so I can't check, but I don't remember a turbo emblem, and I don't see one on any pictures at subaru.com or subdriven.com.

    "Lethal" meaning powerful, fast, exciting...

"Low Police Profile" meaning lethal but not a police magnet, like a Vette, Stang, Evo, etc...

p.s. If the brand is so "stealthy", like I see everyone write, how has Subaru stayed in business all these years? Are they a very small company, compared to Honda and Toyota?

    oops, missed that last part...

the 6/80 with 0 deductible at VIP discount was like $1480 I think...

    Yes, Gold Plan.

Hey congratulations! Yes, in relation to Honda or Toyota, Subaru is a very small company with a niche market. In the Sun Belt states Subarus are definitely scarce but head up to the Snow Belt states or the mountains and it's a completely different story. I've been to parts of the country where it seemed like every 3rd car was a Subaru (I know that's an exaggeration but you get the idea).

    -Frank P

P.S. IRT the "Turbo" emblem, I'm guessing that miamixt is refering to the hood scoop ;-)
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
First may I say Frank's Posts are always quite accurate! Subaru has a very small Market share down here, yet when I visited New Jersey a few Months back, every 3rd Car was a Subaru! I went out to buy a Metal Turbo Emblem from anybody, no one sells them any more. Went to the Mall, had a TURBO sticker made, Silver on Black. I knew I would mess it up applying it, nope, went on straight and looks great! Also Subaru might be a smaller Car Company, but it is part of the giant Fuji Company of Japan. To the two of you that just bought the Java Pearl Black XT, GET a copy of the double sided Lance Armstrong Magazine Forester Ad featuring the Black XT, and have it Framed!

Subaru is definitely one of the the most popular makes here in Asheville. Sometimes every other parking space downtown has a Subaru in it. The funny thing is that the used car ads in the newspaper include very few Subarus! Still, the Java Black Forester XT is very rare around here....lots of silver and red XT's and XS's, a few gold and white . I have not seen a STi on the road...and most WRX's are wagons.

Congrats on the java Black Pearl manual XT!! I've had mine for 7 months now and love this car! The color wasn't my first choice when I bought but now I love it. You'll find if you look back on this forum that not everybody likes the gold flecks which at times can give it a bit of a brown hue but man it looks sweet when it's all cleaned up and sitting in the sunshine!!! Unfortunately I've picked up a few hood chips from getting stuck behind a dump truck carrying gravel and a few clinks from inconsiderate 'close-parkers'. Should I check with the nearest Subaru dealer for touch-up paint or is it just as good to order it over the internet from a subie parts place? Any advice would be appreciated.

Subarus made by Fuji Enterprises? Subaru may be a small brand, but Fuji (IIRC) is a huge company involved in heavy trucks and other equipment manufacturing.

    Mark,

I saw in a post from last year you mentioned "upgrading" an XT-M...

Specifically I'd like to ask about your mention of upgrading insulation (for sound deadening). Who does that? Can I? What places on the vehicle are best (Firewall, undercarriage, doors, etc). Will I void any warranty if I do this? Will Subaru do this for a price and still not void any warranty?

    Thanks!

there was an excellent discussion regarding insulation enhancements in the regular Forester board some months ago. Try a search, it should pop up.

Fuji Heavy Industries does the Subaru line, but also does garbage trucks, container houses, wind machines, and small engines (through their Robin line, which was originally a French company)among a host of other things.

I just learned that they shut down their bus and railcar operations in 2002.

I scraped my XT about a Month ago, went online to order some Subaru Touch Up Paint. While the price was around $5, with shipping it was going to be about $20. My Selling Dealer carries no Parts, I went into the local Auto parts Store, picked up a bottle of Honda Midnight Pearl Black touch up paint and it worked great! Sure there is only one Subaru Java Black Pearl Paint with actual 24 K Gold in it, but Black seems to be an easy Color to match in small applications, try some? By the way Fuji is one of the largest Film producers, and Fujitsu is a division of Fuji too!
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
Walt, you made a good decision on the Car, the Color, and the Contract too, and it seems you got a great price! However the Service contracts are a regulated Insurance Product, and supposedly can't be discounted? This is the "retail Price"
    >6 years / 80,000 miles $1200 or Gold $1580. Turbo Surcharge: add $250 to 80K and 100K plans<

When I first bought the XT, there were two bogus Subaru Warranty Web Sites which have since ceased Operation!

Service contracts are a regulated Insurance Product, and supposedly can't be discounted

Totally false! Although I can see why a dealer would want you to think that, in fact nothing could be further from the truth. Extended service contracts carry one of the highest profit margins in the business so anyone paying "retail" is just enriching the dealer.

Frank, have fun running up the mountain! I should be at the start/finish area in a Pepsi booth with my girls for BigBrothers/BigSisters.
Its raining right now, but if it clears up by the time the race is over, run that Silver XT up the Blue Ridge Parkway either way from Asheville -toward Mt. Mitchell or Mt. Pisgah. The roadsides are covered with flowers up to about 3800 ft., the views should be great after the rain, and it's primo conditions for driving a FXT!

I'll be on the look out for you. I grew up in Asheville so am very familiar with the BRP and usually manage to get a drive and hike in when I'm visiting. One of the reasons I picked this weekend was because of everything being in bloom.

Spent the week in Indiana on Freightliner business...there were several replies to my question about lifting the Forester one entire side at a time, such as:

There's no one side point that should be used to lift the entire side.

For a carmaker to urge frequent tire rotation, and specifically to specify rotating front-to-back, it is inexcusably stupid to not provide a suitable side jacking point where both tires on one side can be lifted at once. Any other strategy requires a lot more monkey motion.

I guess I'll try Juice's slotted-2x6 approach, but shame on Subaru for such an obvious omission.

My dealer rotated the tires when I went in at 7,000 miles - but charged me twenty bucks just for that! When they already had the car on a lift to change the oil! I don't think they want my repeat business.

In four days of Indiana driving, I didn't see one other Subaru. Got back to Oregon, and it's every-third-car again. Weird.

I had a rental '04 Dodge Grand Caravan. It is unbelievable how nice that was. It is absolutely light years ahead of our '91 Grand Caravan. More power, far quieter, better ride/handling/steering/brakes, just an amazingly good vehicle. It affirmed my opinion that 99% of SUV buyers are off their rockers.

However, I hold out no hope that future Chrysler minivans will be at all appealing. If the same "stylists" who created the horrifically ugly 300C and Magnum get anywhere near the gorgeous current minivans, they will be completely ruined.

Like the STi, the temp. sensor on the new WRX auto CC is in the center where it should be.
    http://www.cars101.com/subaru/impreza/impreza2005photos.html
Why is it near the ignition on the Forester?
There must be an an engineering explanation for this, right?

I've given up trying to find logic sometimes with FHI. :-p

  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
Sure enough it's in plain view right below the AC controls in the center of the dash. Question is does it get better air flow? Cause without something to move the air over the sensor it's not going to be significantly more effective than the Forester's ignition location.

I called a dealer in my area up some time ago (Ron Price Subaru in the SF Bay Area to be exact) and was quoted $165 for a tire rotation. I kid you NOT! $165!! They could not de-couple the rotation from the 15K mile service (which apparently included a $145 oil change) and could only charge me the full price! LOL I used the money I saved to buy a set of jack stands and immediately switched dealers to the next closest dealer in my area (which happens to be the best dealer in California for customer satisfaction) - Carlsen Subaru in Redwood City. Can you believe that?! -elissa

Steve- Surely you're going to post that in the X3/FX/XT topic? What I find ironic is the Edmunds "Compare similar vehicles" section at the end of the article doesn't list the FXT even though the Edmunds reviewer recommends it be cross-shopped ;-)

I've got about 1,400 miles on my Cayenne XT automatic. Love it. Here in Eugene,OR there are Foresters everywhere but haven't seen any other XTs on the road. Foresters are pretty rare in newspaper Used Cars. Everyone who has one seems to love it. Last tank of El Supremo I got 18.6 mpg-60% highway, 40% around town. Temp in 60s and 70s. Little disappointing in that dept but still, all-in all am delighted.
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
Frank, I was told that the Subaru "Service Contract", is a Regulated Insurance Product, unlike the "Maintainence Contract" which is a Dealer Product with the Subaru name on it. And the "Profit Margin" is at least 40% on both. In any case, the worst part of purchasing my XT is over, the Potamkin Subaru Dealership in Miami has gone out of Business in less than a Year. You don't know how happy I was to hear this today. No matter where you live in the USA, avoid the Potamkin and Planet Automotive name at all costs!

FWIW, my last fill-up on my PP auto yielded 25.0 with about a 75 / 25 hwy/city split (70 - 75 mph hwy): 135 miles to the 3/4 mark - 285 at the 1/4. Gas mileage is slowly improving with age at 9100 miles - even with some WOT runs to the limit to merge.
I got lucky yesterday finding a station at 1.71 / gal. for 91 oct. - before it went back up...

    Who backs the service contract?
Ask who performs or pays for repairs under the terms of the service contract. It may be the manufacturer, the dealer, or an independent company.

Many service contracts sold by dealers are handled by independent companies called administrators. Administrators act as claims adjusters, authorizing the payment of claims to any dealers under the contract. If you have a dispute over whether a claim should be paid, deal with the administrator.

If the administrator goes out of business, the dealership still may be obligated to perform under the contract. The reverse also may be true. If the dealer goes out of business, the administrator may be required to fulfill the terms of the contract. Whether you have recourse depends on your contract's terms and/or your state's laws.

Learn about the reputation of the dealer and the administrator. Ask for references and check them out. You also can contact your local or state consumer protection office, state Department of Motor Vehicles, local Better Business Bureau, or local automobile dealers association to find out if they have public information on the firms. Look for the phone numbers and addresses in your telephone directory.

Find out how long the dealer or administrator has been in business, and try to determine whether they have the financial resources to meet their contractual obligations. Individual car dealers or dealer associations may set aside funds or buy insurance to cover future claims. Some independent companies are insured against a sudden rush of claims.

Find out if the auto service contract is underwritten by an insurance company. In some states, this is required. If the contract is backed by an insurance company, contact your State Insurance Commission to ask about the solvency of the company and whether any complaints have been filed.

Ballistic - $20?! That's a DEAL! I called a dealer in my area up some time ago (Ron Price Subaru in the SF Bay Area to be exact) and was quoted $165 for a tire rotation. I kid you NOT! $165!!

That is insane. If I were you, I would have them provide a written estimate to rotate tires for a quoted price of $165, and then I'd report that outrageous ripoff to Subaru and to the Better Business Bureau. Dealers such as that should be forced out of business.

Just to put this into context, for about 10 years I've been having my cars (no longer under warranty) serviced by a local Beaverton, Oregon independent shop. They perform my oil-and-filter changes for $15.00. That price includes checking all fluid levels, inspecting hoses, pulling the wheels to inspect the brakes, and so forth. And, because they already have the car up and the wheels off (to check the brakes), they gladly rotate the tires at no extra cost. Fifteen bucks for all that. Compare that to what you were quoted!

They also have been the most trustworthy repair mechanics I've ever encountered (other than my own father, when he was alive) - consistently doing occasional repairs to my cars (water pump, timing belt, brakes, etc.) for half or less than the next lowest estimate I get anywhere else. Never once have I ever been left with that old uneasy feeling that they were suggesting anything costly that the cars might not actually need.

Unfortunately, that all came to an end several months ago. The owner retired and moved to another state. <<<<sigh!!!>>>>

    Elissa,

Costco will mount tires for $9 each (I just had their Concord store put Toyo's (which I bought at Infineon Raceway [Sears Point]) on my Miata. This $36, for four tires, will allow me to get them rotated at Costco free, including free further balancing (should it ever be required) and free flat fixes, for the life of the tires. I'm sure they'll do this for you too (and just skip the mount/balance part). Only thing is they won't mount tires that are "out of spec" so they wouldn't do the Falkens for my FXT (225/50R17). I avoid car dealers as much as I can. So, going this way will only cost $36 divided by the number of times you have them rotate your tires in the coming years. Next to nothing.....

              Cheers,

                    Bob

....as noted within this thread..make for amusing reading. But I would second Ballistic's pointing to including the BBB/Subaru on this. Sad.

At the risk of repeating myself these posts can be wonderfully supportive....ez
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
Anyone care to bet $50 that if Ellis had called instead of Elissa, that the quoted amount would have been MUCH lower than $165?
People like this are no more than low grade Con-men(persons)and just like that line of work, you profile to pick a victim who's more likely to be taken. Amongst the bottom feeders of the automotive world, women are seen as an easier mark. Gut them Elissa, I would certainly contact your BBB, and SOA written quote or not. Just drop a line on the SOA board if nothing else. Even without written proof, a recurring complaint can't be a 'simple misunderstanding' everytime.

Anyone know when I might expect to see the FXT.MT with the Premium Package?

There's a lot of attention (warranted, I hope) devoted to the new Legacy and Outback models, but I'm leaning towards the Forester, and the dealerships don't seem to know anything about the 05 FXT.

    Also, any new colors?

    Thanks,

Thanks for the compliment, Nicholas! :-)

As for how much I think I (or any woman) get ripped off when going for automotive work... it's hard to say. That used to worry me alot when I was younger. I assumed I'd always be taken for a ride, especially if I appeared auto-ignorant. So I started learning whatever I could about fixing cars to avoid that...

Now I can see where that slight paranoia got me - I just spent an entire weekend changing my husbands' 6-cyl dodge truck's spark plugs (UGH), engine coolant, rear diff fluid (I can do it better than the shop that leaves it leaking!), tire rotation, air filter, oil... hm... I think that's it. You know, when my HUSBAND goes into a shop, it's HE that's gotten taken, NOT ME. In his first 7000 miles of owning this truck, he spent about $6000 in maintenance at the dealer! He had several oil changes, his rear diff was replaced with synthetic, his tires were rotated twice... I could go on and on!

I give you that, shops and dealers DO find a willing mark but I assure you it's not ME and it's not entirely based on one's sex. ;-) I think the most important factor is finding a reputable shop that explains what's happening to your car and listens to what you have to say - I do check the BBB also. It also doesn't hurt to learn a thing or two about your second largest investment!
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306

I had no doubts about that when I posted it. I'd be a much fatter potential sucker than you, no doubt. But I remember they did one of these undercover journalism thingys once sending customers in with a minor problem, and the female customers were more likely to have unnecessary or overpriced work pushed at them.

zman, since the 05 Forester specs are posted at subaru.media site, admittedly in a nearly incomprehensible pdf, its only a matter of weeks before they stat shipping 05's. I understand the last run of 04's is on the boats from Japan as we speak. No info on colors for 05 yet, except for the LLBean model.

My local Subaru dealer, Prestige, had two cars and two sales guys at the registration area...I may consider snatching up that Red FXT MT if the deal is good enough....its the last 04 XT w/MT they are going to get, and I dont know that leather and moonroof are worth the $$ it will cost for an 05 XT PP w/ MT. My 13 yo daughter and I each got nice blue STi ball caps...she hasnt taken hers off since!

I second the "know something about it" issue. At 16, I had to smog my 1971 Opel and thought I would try my local Midas dealer (how can you go wrong with a big name like that?). The "mechanic" told me I needed a tune-up in order to pass smog. Pimples and all, scratching my head, saying gee, the only thing off on it is the dwell, and that only by 2 degrees... I wonder what I did wrong? Midas repair guy turns red. End of story.

In my 9 Months of Ownership, took my first extended trip from Miami to Tampa. I had no idea the XT does so well at 100MPH +. Where's the middle range gearing in the A/T XT, still haven't found it? Under 20 MPG as usual. Man or Woman, we are at the mercy of Mechanics. While under Warranty it's a good idea to establish the best working relationship with your Service Manager, especially if you are doing some Maintainence yourself. And at my Subaru/Suzuki Dealership, a 15K Subaru Service is $50, a 15K Suzuki Service $150, go figure? And if you don't pay you don't drive, that's how California's Smog Program used to work, it's amazing how the Car could pass the 2nd time with the "Mechanic" just pulling the Hoses! And the final word about the Subaru Extended Service Contract, just like ANY other Extended Service Contract, it is Insurance, and as so must answer to your State Insurance Department, in Most States, that is if your State has one!
  • edunnettedunnett Member Posts: 553
Here's a great story for the crowd. A true testament to excellent customer service and also to saving your maint. records. At 38K miles I took my '01 Forester in to the dealer for:
    1) grinding first gear
    2) burning axle grease leaking out onto exhaust
    3) clunk from the rear when shifting

They suggested that because I hadn't ever been to the dealer before that perhaps I wasn't maintaining the car properly and that maybe synthetic gear oil wasn't recommended... to which I produced evidence to the contrary - my huge maint folder and records from SOA stating that synthetic is not UN-recommended. They promptly test drove, reproduced all symptoms and replaced the first gear, DOJ seal and rear differential. In the months to follow I've gotten a no-questions-asked response to all of my requests for warranty service on oil leaks, coolant leaks, cat converter noise, etc. Fabulous service! But I made sure the car was always impecibly maintained and had records to prove it. Guess where I bought my new XT? The dealer I'm talking about is the highest performing Stellar dealer in CA - no surprise! Carlsen Subaru in Redwood City - worth the drive.

I was wondering where you were. I hate to say it but the race was poorly organized, they did a much better job last year. I missed the red FXT. By the time I arrived there was just the Outback. However, I too managed to score an STi cap (and a Subaru keychain bottle opener).

I'm getting 35 mpg in my XT by coasting in neutral. I guess the sticker on the window was way off huh? After all, there's a strong incentive for manufacturers to understate gas mileage.
