How to sell my car out of State?

Hi All,

My parents financed my Honda back in 2011 in PA. I moved to CA last year and just paid off the car. I would like to sell my car, but I'm not sure what are the steps. The car is still under my mom's name and the license plate is still PA's plate. If I plan to sell the car in CA, what should I do?

Thanks,
Samuel

You'll need the car's title signed by your mother AND the lien holder listed on the title. You'll also have to remove the car's license plates and either destroy them or return them to PA DMV. Do NOT give them to the new owner!! Also give the new owner a Bill of Sale with the vehicle's ID, amount paid, and the notation "Sold As Is". You can download a bill of sale form from the internet or from the California DMV website.

If your mom and the lien holder (bank, finance company, whatever) doesn't sign off on the title, the new owner can't register it and you can't legally sell it.
