Calling Los Angeles-based car shoppers: Have you recently traded in (or plan to trade in) a car with negative equity (i.e. the amount you owe on your auto loan is greater than the car's value)? A reporter would like to speak with you; please reach out to PR@Edmunds.com by 11/6 for details.

End of Lease buyout

I leased a lexus back in 2012 for a good deal and coming close to end of the lease. I really like the car but the residual is $4,000 above what the market value is.

1. Can you negotiate on the buyout? Has anyone done so with Lexus
2. Do you negotiate with the dealer or LFS?
3. If can do above two can I say I'll pay what the TMV is or is it half way; how much should i offer to pay?

I would contact your dealer... tell them you might want the car, but not at the residual. They might get the car for less and make you an offer. It can't hurt.

This used to be easy to do.. but, many captive banks have started putting restrictions on selling a car back to the lessee.. BMW makes this harder, now.
