08 Jeep Compass transmission

Hey guys, lately I've noticed that in the lower gears my jeep compass is a little jerky. Once it gets above 50 it's fine. I took it to a mechanic and after looking at it he said that I need a new computer for it. Said that a used one would cost me 489. Does this sound right? I don't know enough to know if I'm getting screwed or not.

    What do you mean by "jerky" exactly? Hard shifting? Slips between gear changes? What's the basis for his diagnosis? Did he pull codes out of the TCM, or just test drive it?
