I want to import a Cadillac CTS 2008 from the USA. However, after reading this forum for more than a week, I'm a little discouraged. As it has been already said earlier, most of GM cars and trucks are now INADMISSIBLE according to the RIV list. It seems to deal mainly with the Immobilization System. What the h**.... No question, it is a good way to stop the flow of imported cars crossing the border... Is it possible to install an aftermarket immobilization system that meets the canadian standard CMVSS114 on a GM product? Somehow, I have some hope since woodytwo saw a 2008 enclave that was imported at an Ontario dealer's lot last week. Thanks.
For SUV your best bet is Subaru. You will save 10-15k or even more and you can easily find dealers in US knowing all process and very very wanting to sell you this car.
Alright now....for the sake of my sanity because I'm flying to Spokane Tuesday to pick up my Tacoma...
Your Tacoma was manufactured after Sept 1/07?
When you crossed the border you presented your MSO and recall clearance letter and Export worksheet and that was good enough? No threats of sending you back?
RIV will send you the Form 2 which you take to Canadian Tire for your inspection then you can go to the Registry agent to register it, right?
jashall, was you Tacoma manufactured after Sept 1, 2007? I am going to pick my 2008 Tacoma up on Thursday and I also have the amnesty letter, but my truck was manufactured after sept 1.
Most '08 Tacoma's have the immobilizer as a standard item, unless it's a basic single cab work truck (check on Toyota.com). Even with it, it doesn't mean that RIV will allow it. That has yet to be decided, and we'll all have to wait on that answer later this week it sounds like.
Typically ignorant of his market. You should thank the americans 290 MIL of them for buying cars manufactured in Canada, If Canadians reciprocate all is fine , If American workers dont buy Canadian you will be out of work in a hurry.
Yes, it's a 2008 Toyota Tacoma built in Fresno California in late October of this year.
To answer another persons question:
US Customs needs your docs 72 hrs prior to crossing. These docs are the MSO (front & back), the U.S. Customs & Border Protection Vehicle/Equipment Export Work sheet "specific" for your Port of Entry/Exit, and the Bill of Sale.
Canada Customs doesn't care about your recall letter (only RIV). They want to look at the same documents you gave to the U.S. Customs and having the "pre-Nov 1st" amnesty letter doesn't hurt.
2008 tacoma built after sept 1/07 is inadmissible at present. I dont think they are going to change status of vehicles in TC announcement. But who knows?. I will suggest just wait and better look for Tacoma 07/ model or 08 model built before sept 1/07.
You will fine! Remember to read the fine print and MAKE your register read it WITH you! "9. Every Passenger vehicle, multipurpose passenger vehicle, truck and 3 wheeled vehicle manufactured after September 1, 2007 and with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) less than 4,536 kg (10,000 lbs), except an emergency vehicle or a walk-in van, must be equipped with an immobilization system that meets CMVSS 114."
How Rude, NO..Not EVERY dealer will say what ever it takes to get a deal, We have more morals then that. I have told 5 people TODAY that the car they want is NOT allowed in no matter WHAT they do! Just had to get that off my chest!
Some states do not allow the MSO to be given to a person, such as Montana where it is signed and sent the court house. Alaska does not, it says that the Customer must bring it. So every state and every make has a different rule. :confuse:
They will use the top price in your purchase order. BUT be aware!! There have been people trying to make there own. And after 25,000 a month now, the boarder crossing people have become quite good at knowing what cars cost and if yours is off by a lot, they will flag it. I have seen them ask for your check copy or your wire transfer of money receipt.
I also didn't think I needed the recall letter until I got the vehicle into Canada.
But the customs agent who I dealt with said their port doesn't let anyone across without the recall letter. So it looks like this may vary depending where you cross and among the customs people.
I'm please to announce that my SUV (post sept production) purchased on Oct 31st is now equipped with Canadian plates. (it was a hell of a rollercoaster ride: going from being excited purchasing a new car and saving tons of cash on Oct 31st to getting sucker punched on November 5th when I learn from the US custom guy's that my car was now inadmissible. The next few days were extremly difficult, the gazillion call to RIV, the law suit threath, the waiting on a letter that finally appeared on Thursday. Then once I cross the border with the vehicle, I start reading this board. Thank you to all the conspiracy theorist on this board as to hint that the RIV would reneg their amnisty letter, thank you to all of those who has Laurence Cannon giving speached on closing the canadian border to imported cars> You made the wait time for my form 2 a living hell!!!.
During that weekend, I prepared for war with the RIV I got in contact with a great gentlemen Robert Lamb (The honda civic guy on the gazette).
For those of you that are currently stuck. (You have not purchase an SUV prior to October 31st) then in my opinion you folks should get together with Robert Lamb and use the media's to fight the Automobile manufacturers who are hiding behind this CVMSS rule as to prevent auto imports.
As for myself, my next challenge is to take on my car builder on its refusal to warranty my car in Canada.
God damn it, the car is built in CANADA, and it proudly wears its manufacturers logo on the front grill.
I hope you are correct ... but I purchased after Oct 31 though and the list changed even though the vehicle was a pre Sept 1, 2007 manufactured Cad Escalade EXT ... so I am still very stressed about the whole predicament .....

Hey gents, Can we import car from U.S but the car is built in canada which is on the addmissible list? Whyit cannot meet the canada standard if it is built in canada?
Just so I 've got this right. Do I read that all amnesty letters are now usable?? Or just some?? They haven't been revoked??
If this is the case, I'll get on the phone tomorrow and won't hang up until I get me a letter too?? I tried a few days ago but to no avail. I gave up when I read on this forum that they had been revoked.
I was told by RIV November 7th that I would have an exception and would be allowed to import my vehicle. They gave me a reference # and said I didn't need a letter. Called RIV on November 12th was told the vehicle was inadmissible again and to wait until TC's announcement before trying to bring the vehicle into Canada. Like you I don't know what to think, some people seem to be getting through with the exception. I would hate to chance bringing the vehicle in and not be so lucky as some of the others.
I recently leased a new car in the US (where I'm a permanent resident) but think I may move back to Canada (where I'm a citizen) next year. Can I bring my US leased car with me for the balance of the lease or do I need to return the car and buy-out my lease?
Anyone have any more input regarding exporting from US a vehicle with MSO that is not under your name but under your friend/relative? And then being able to import and register the vehicle in Canada? This is currently the situation which I am facing, reading from Shunx's post it appears he may have been sucessful by indicating himself as a transporter?
Is there some type of form or documentation required to be a transporter to export vehicle if you have the MSO but under a different name? Thx in advance.
FYI, the imports, who offer more "real world" interest rates, don't care if you pay cash or finance. If you finance they get a cheque from Honda/Nissan/Toyota Credit at the time of delivery. Usually why you don't see "cash price" and finance price variances like a domestic with 0% rates subsidized by a larger profit margin. Basically what helps keep resale values up too. Still...would be nice to see some adjustments.
I was just reading your post where you state that "Highlander and Rav's are not even allowed to put third party immobilizer systems". Could you tell me where you got this information. I'm bringing my RAV4 across next week. I spoke with Mastergard and was told they can install and certify their system and it will meet 114 and will not affect warranty. I still belive that Section 9 (RIV) will allow me to have work done after importing, then get it passed at CTC. Am I wrong on this.
One harsh reality - I've been trying to find a pre-Sept. 1 Toyota Sienna LE in Ohio, to be purchased through a friend, and guess what - there aren't any available in the state, they are all post-Sept. 1. Anyone else in the same boat?
get your dealership (or any USA authorized GM dealership) to print out recall data from their service system. I brought back an 08 Sierra 2500 duramax (manufactured Aug.30/07) & that qualified for recall documentation
I have a 2008 EXT (pre Sept. 1 manufacture date) sitting in US for two weeks now ... do I have to go to a dealer and get a print out of recall data ... have not been successful getting a letter from TC ... so I do not know where I stand ... going south today to look at it ... the fellow that I bought it from doesn't mind storing but I hope as I wait I am not digging a bigger hole to crawl into .....
Anyone who has sugestions please reply ... can give you my e-mail address if that is preferred
mso is the only way to go mso = manufacture statement of origin = manufacturer certificate of origin = ORIGINAL TITLE. you have mso in your name (address doesnt matter) = you have title if you buy a vehicle in usa new, when you register it (pay registration, state tax, etc) that county turns it into title. MSO is all you need for proof of ownership as mentioned, address does not matter trust me on this, been there done that
Yes . Presently you are not allowed to put third parrt on toyota highalnder, Rav's. I talked to RIVA agents at least 20 times. These vehciles have to have n immobilizer system from toyota dn you need a compliane letter from toyota. Toyota are not giving any letters to comply with CMVSS114. I am just waiting of new announcement from TC. I hope that will clear this mess. It may happen today. So just sit tight.
i bought an 08 gmc duramax. manufactured aug.30/07 i brought across no problems late october (bought on MSO with usa address) recall letter = all i needed was printout from dealership service system no probs with can tire inspection. rubber stamp

10 minutes later, I was through both crossings.
my MP's office called back (but i wasn't home to talk with them) so hopefully pressure from different directions will help
