Like you I see it for what it is...trolling...you make some good points though...I thought it was a good suggestion to make, however, to the moderators given how obvious it is...let's see if they think so...

    Cheers

"Normally true, but I think right now almost any dealer in Canada would be very motivated to discount significantly from MSRP."

I would have to strongly disagree.

I went into an Acura dealership and was told no deal/no discount from MSRP for a cash purchase of their CSX model. They are selling the 2008 CSX for the same price as a 2008 TSX in the USA - a much more upscale model!

I think that the dealerships are starting to suffer though, if the quality of their sales people are any indication. The salesperson I was assigned appeared to be very poorly suited to the position. He had an extremely poor command of the English language and what is much worse, he did not seem to have any idea what he was doing. When I told him I was interested in a cash deal on a CSX, he assured me there would be a substantial discount on the price. When I asked him how large, he looks at his sheet (with only about a half dozen models in the Acura stable, wouldn't you think that he would have this data memorized?) and then he goes and talks with the next level up flunkie. Guess what? No cash discount! This seems to be the optimum formula for pissing off a potential customer - promise him a big discount and then give him a big fat zero! What an idiot! He works at the Acura dealership in the North Shore Auto Mall if you want to meet this guy.

I hope this dealership goes out of business real soon!!! They don't deserve to stay in business.

I have been following this particular forum for several days now and.... am impressed with the knowledge and perseverance you guys possess. Maybe you could suggest a solution for me.
I have found a sweet deal for a 2008 Caddy SRX , here in Florida. BUT it is not admissable according to RIV. If I were to make any/all mods and could prove it with documention and showed up at the border ..and followed all procedures for export/import, .would I be allowed to register the vehicle on the Canadian side?? Or I would I be ordered to take it back it to the US ?
I cannot get an answer out of RIV. They do not return e-mails, My life is in a shambles of want and desire. I feel like a 13 year old in quest of unfulfilled love.
I am also aware that I would have to pay Florida sales tax AND Ontario tax, BUT still I would save a wad of $ Can anyone out there please help me?
  • darferdarfer Member Posts: 50
are you planning to have the manufacture do the mods? I believe after market mods are not exceptabe? unless they are done by the manufacture. Better to call RIV, I have gotten through many times. Clear as mud?

Maybe we can compare notes. email yahyahsoutt@yahoo.ca. I have ordered a 2008 Cayenne. It will be a post Sept. build. I have no idea if I can get it in. I am attempting currently to get in contact with Porsche to "verify admissibility". I too have a broker who intends to contact Porsche as well.

When did you cross the border? Was the 13,000 lbs Gvw, that allowed you to cross. Have a Ford f 350 dually to cross in a couple weeks.
  • manitoumikemanitoumike Member Posts: 19
I haven't crossed the border yet. Panic set in when I read the RIV Section 3 report. The whole deal has been put on hold. I am waiting for more info from RIV and MT. Having Patience is a [non-permissible content removed]

Has anyone imported a 2008 Cadillac EXT pre Sept. 1 2007 - I have bought and just waiting for the title and then I plan to FAX and import .... just curious to know if someone has gone through this process with this vehicle ... thanks in advance!

I found this to be one of the best forums on importing, and I learned enough on-line to get through the process. I picked up my new Tribeca on November 21st and got my Ontario plates two days later. Here are my tips on importing a new vehicle, based on my experience.

    1. Check www.riv.ca to ensure your vehicle is eligible for import. If you ignore this, you are asking for trouble.
    2. Even if it is on the RIV list (and, e.g., has the proper immobilizer) determine if any modifications will be required. My Tribeca required no mods.
    2. Check the warranty implications of importing with the manufacturer. I read on-line that I could be reimbursed for warranty work by Subaru USA, but I didn't rely on what I read on line. Call the manufacturer and ask where you can see it in writing. For me, it turned out be true and is posted as a FAQ on www.subaru.ca. Who'd a thunk.
    3. Find a dealer who has sold to Canadians and knows what is required. Half of the business my dealer does is with Canadians, so they have a standard documentation package and process. You can put the documentation together yourself, so this isn't absolutely essential, but it is a valuable service.
    4. Fax your ownership to US.. customs 3 days in advance. Some border crossings require more documentation than others. I saw a guy turned away at US. customs.
    5. Pay your RIV fee on line and fax your recall letter (which can only be gotten after your deal is finalized) and your Form 1 (which you complete at Canada Customs). If you live in Toronto, drive to the RIV office. You'll have federal inspection form (Form 2) in minutes if you have your proper recall letter and Form 1.
    6. When you get your federal inspection done by the Canadian Tire dweeb, ignore him if he tells you you need a safety inspection for your new vehicle (for Ontario MTO). It ain't so.

    I hope this helps.

The Questions is for any and all out there who DEFINATELY KNOW whether

    1) I as an individual, could bring cars back as a business venture, or on behalf of a friend/relative who I am doing a favour for???

    2) If so, a) how, and b) do I have to pay the applkicable taxes at the border, or can they wait until the person (indiv. who has contracted me, or relative) has possession of the car and goes into provincial MoT office.

Advice welcome, but would prefer answers from those who can respond for certain to the previous questions.

Okay, I've found a 2007 CR-V that has a salvage title and has been rebuilt. It is being sold by a re-seller, not a dealer. I have two questions about importing it to Canada:

    1. Any problems with importing and registering a rebuilt vehicle on a Salvage Title?

    2. How can I get a Recall Clearance Letter from Honda? I know in Darfer's post #2428 he points out how the VAFUS links to the Honda owners link website: http://www.ahm-ownerlink.com that will tell you if there is any outstanding recalls for a particular VIN. I checked and there are none for this vehicle. However, how does one get something to show RIV?
  • defrederickdefrederick Member Posts: 52
I talked to my Toyota dealer on Friday about my stamped Form 2 and they had about a 4 inch stack of them. They also said that RIV is about two months behind on their paperwork, but somehow the export notices are getting mailed out ahead of their paperwork.

I'm expecting an export notice anytime, as my Form 2 expired today. I called RIV twice and they claim they never received my fax. So for those of you who think you should have been in the clear and you receive an export notice, you might want to sit back and wait for a couple of months until the dust settles. I still don't know what their plan is for enforcement. Show up at your door with a tow truck? Maybe a repo man?

My dealer also said that RIV is so overwhelmed with calls that they've hired a call centre to man the phones. This might be a reason for their huge inconsistencies on answers to queries.

FYI, if you walk in to any Honda/Toyota/Nissan/Acura/Lexus/Infiniti dealership, they could not care less if you pay cash or finance. There is no benefit to them whatsoever. Either you write a cheque upon delivery or their national financing arm does. And the financing arm usually pays a kickback for every new client. With rates at under 4 or 5%, the smart financial thing is to get a good price on the vehicle and borrow their cheap money and put yours to work for you somewhere else making more than 4% a year.
  • bodble2bodble2 Member Posts: 4,514
Yup, for sure there are some real idiots out there selling cars!

I've been dealing with Burrard Acura and for the most part they've been pretty good. The CSX is a Canada-only model though, is it not? Hence they probably figure they can be bullish on the price since you can't import one from the US. Plus you can't make a direct comparison on prices. Did you ask him about the TL? I've heard there is a $4K rebate on the TL, which would make that a pretty darn attractive buy.

Well after some digging through The Canada Gazette, it seems that this entire situation was unforeseen by the Ministry of Transport and at the time of consultation the auto industry was not in favour of a unique CMVSS114 vs FMVSS114. When the CMVSS114 was developed the Can/US price difference was not an issue. However, the OEM have now exploited the unique CMVSS114 standard with the help of Transport Canada. The following excerpt from Canada Gazette.

    http://canadagazette.gc.ca/partII/20...l/sor45-e.html

"The Department also considered the question of mandating the marking of parts, which would have harmonized Canada's requirements with those of the U.S. However, it concluded that this option would have done little to improve road safety in Canada. While the Department is concerned about reducing vehicle theft that results in property damage, the more important road safety issue relates to motor vehicle thefts committed by youth. The Department has concluded that this amendment would address this road safety issue more effectively."

It appears that a label is at least one (or only) difference.
The key is the difference between CMVSS114 and FMVSS114. Transport Canada is the cause of this mess and all complaints should be directed at them. They thought that a separate immobilizer standard would have little impact at a time when the US/Canadian prices were close. Well, the facts have changed and this is a clear case of unintended consequences.

    Transport Canada should either:

    Accept the US FMVSS114 or

Allow modifications to comply with CMVSS114.

However, government bureaucracies are notorious for sticking to bad policy.

We should contact the Minister of Transport Canada and demand documentation for the difference between CMVSS114 and FMVSS114. Also we need to demand that the issue be reopened and reassessed. The Canadian Consumer is being ripped off by bad policy. CMVSS114 has unintentionally created a non tariff trade barrier for the OEMs to exploit.

It was started in 2006 --check it out --- see more of 'us' with same issues.

Wonder how many more there are out there .... I will post a similar message there as well ... ( good excuse for cross posting ?? )

Any protests could use more voices ... --see the last page (well page 653--as this just keeps growing)

ps - still lots of data missing in www.carburner.com -- come one guys ( and gals) register and share your knowledge .. especially for things like manufactures warranty - or lack thereof. Once you understand what a wiki is -- really effective for such issues like this - with ever changing fact acting data.

#1. Look at section 15 in the vehicles admissable on RIV's website. I read it and its clear as mud. As with much of the RIV info.

#2. Enter your VIN # in the Search field in the top right had corner and print the document.

hope this helps. And He is actually a She.

I have been thinking that way myself the last few days.

Hundyai is offerring 0% loans for up to 5 years. I was originally intending to borrow the money from my line of credit which is currently charging me 6%. A $30K loan over 5 years at 0% versus 6% saves me roughly 4.5K.

Perhaps that is the way to go.
  • blangelaanblangelaan Member Posts: 31
You are correct about the CSX being a "Canada only" vehicle and it occured to me also that is why they are not offering any discount on the CSX.

I do not care for the TL (it is too large, I would buy the new Accord if I wanted such a large vehicle) but I do like the TSX. But the TSX is 10K cheaper in the US, and even if the Canadian dealerships offer a 3 or 4 K discount, that still leaves them 6 to 7 K to expensive in my of thinking. Now if they gave a 4K discount and 0% financing over 5 years we might be able to work out a deal.

Great msg. What about getting the 3 immobilizers approved by the insurance bureau of canada - also approved by transport canada. I noticed on the powerlock site they referenced a us law in regards to manufactures warranties - no problem. I will email tc with you msg and also reference the 3rd party immobilizers . Let's keep the pressure on

I have been very confused lately about how to interpret the RIV list.

For example, for Hand/Acura in the Admissable column it has:

    1992 TO 2007 All models.
2007 AND 2008 Acura TSX built
    after September 1st, 2007
2007 AND 2008 Acura TL built
    after September 1st, 2007
2007 AND 2008 Acura RL built
    after September 1st, 2007
    2007 AND 2008 Honda S2000 built
    after September 1st, 2007

    ========================================================

    And in the Inadmissable Column:

All other 2008 models not listed in
    the admissible column.

    ========================================================

Since they have already stated all 2007 models are admissable, why is it necessary to state again for example for the TSX:

2007 AND 2008 Acura TSX built
    after September 1st, 2007

Also, what about a 2008 TSX built before Sept. 1st, 2007? The information above would seem to suggest that they are not admissable. Yet, I thought the issues around the Sept. 1, 2007 date were to do with not letting in vehicles built after Sept. 1, 2007 , not before Sept. 1, 2007 ?!?

I took several boolean algebra courses in University (and did very well on them btw) and I still can't make any sense of this!
  • bodble2bodble2 Member Posts: 4,514
With the TSX you also need to factor in the 6.1% import duty, plus potential transport costs, travel costs, modification costs, and misc fees. So, at the end of the day, the difference may not be that significant. Plus, Honda is doing everything they can to stonewall people from importing.
  • blangelaanblangelaan Member Posts: 31
"Plus, Honda is doing everything they can to stonewall people from importing. "

This is why I am very inclined to not purchase a Honda product at all, even though I am have been happy with my current Acura. Honda has managed to erase a lot of the "good will" they had accumulated over the years with this one bone headed move!

Honda is the not the only car manufacturer out there. The new 2008 Subaru WRX STI will likely come out at about 35K in the US and it has similar or better performance specs to a Canadian 50K+ German sports car. Check it out:

You probably got an answer already, buy anyways...

I picked up a 08 Tacoma in CA and yes, they have to request an MSO from Toyota since they don't keep it on hand at the dealership like other states. This was a surprise. Had to go back home and wait for the call to return once the MSO arrived at the dealer. Surprised that it arrived at all considering comes from Toyota corporate. Anyways, they say it takes 10 - 14 days. Mine came in after 11 days. Drove home, crossed no problem, faxed RIV recall letter with Form 1, RIV had Form 2 in my inbox the next day, C tire 1/2 hour = done. Of course pre-Sept 1.

Check out Tacomanation.com for info on DIY DRL mod before you go to C. Tire. This is a must. 1/2 hour job and cheap if you get parts from trdparts4u.com
I also swapped out my instr. cluster since red LED's used make it impossible to see the small metric on US cluster. Tacomanation also has cluster LED mod info. to change to whatever color you want!

Hope you get this in time to help.
    Cheers!

My partner and I have a slightly different situation. We actually live in California and are looking to buy a new Prius. However, we plan to move to Canada in early 2009 (a little over a year from now), and obviously the hope is that we would be able to take our year-old Prius 2008 with us. Is it true that, as of the current RIV listings and the Sept1/07 rules/immobilization-system rules that Toyota is using to prevent cars from being imported to canada, that over a year from now (in 2009) we'd be screwed and have to sell our car and be forced to buy one in Canada? It just seems wrong - I mean, we're planning on immigrating to Canada and while Toyota/RIV's practices seem intent on hampering same-day importing of cars, it's now also preventing us from buying a new car that we actually NEED to use while living in the US over the next year before we move to Canada.

    Hi westpoint,

So this car dealer in CA is willing to sell to Canadian? How much is the shipping?

    Thanks.
  • 03terminator03terminator Member Posts: 14
I would suggest that you quickly find a pre Sept 1 2007 build vehicle, as of now post Sept 1 are not admissible. Also, I suspect that Canadians will be scouring the US for Pre Sept 1 2007 vehicles of all types that are now inadmissible.
  • whiterock2whiterock2 Member Posts: 9
    Thanks, Darlene.

Per VAFUS section 15, the vehicle should be importable.

On the honda owners link website, if I put the VIN in the searchbox and search i don't get anything. If I register with the VIN and check the recall link it says there are no recalls, but it doesn't show the VIN# on the same page that it shows no recalls :( . So if i just print that, it could be from any VIN...

    Cheers, Mike
  • darferdarfer Member Posts: 50
Hi while you are already on the recall page, just type the VIN in the search field and then print, you are entering the VIN after the fact, but at least its on the page.

jamdar@telus.net email me if this doesnt make sense.
  • westpointwestpoint Member Posts: 9
The dealer can't sell to Canadians anymore. Getting the MSO from Toyota must have triggered a stop selling letter.

There are dozens of shippers who give quotes. Try Hansens or DAS.

Regarding CA tax, you have to do your homework by reading forums and researching beyond what the salespeople tell you.

Good luck in finding a pre Sept. 1 vehicle after US Thanksgiving. Apparently that is a huge shopping event for Americans, including vehicles.

    check redflagdeals.com autowow forum:

UPDATE: BMW CANADA SCREWS OVER CANADIANS AGAIAN!!

This is taken right from http://www.ucanimport.blogspot.com/

    "Dear Readers:

In an effort to make it even more costly to import a BMW from the US, BMW has issued an edict to its dealers NOT to print off an Internal Dealer Printout, which until now was a suitable and acceptable alternative to a Recall Clearance Letter.

Here is how the Recall Clearance Process will work when you contact BMW or the US Dealer:

    Submitted by UCanImport Subscriber:

All North American BMW dealers have been notified that they can not release printouts of vehicle history reports to owners. Even the computer systems used by the dealers in the USA and Canada have been modified to flash a large warning in RED to this effect when a dealer pulls up a internal dealer history report for printing. RIV told me I could go this route instead of a recall letter, but BMW must have caught on.

BMW for whatever reason has instigated a new policy effective Nov. 26, 2007. Not only do they now require a $500 two-hour Canadian dealer VIN inspection before issuing a recall clearance letter, but as of the 26th, they require $350 for a letter of admissibility, before they will do a recall letter, and as of the 26th, a BMW dealer is the only one that can do the daytime running headlights (otherwise no recall letter). This adds about $1100 to the cost of importing compared to the Toyota that I brought in a few months ago. If you want to contact BMW Canada, they will confirm all of this.
    --------------------
There you go folks, Free Trade has just become a little bit more expensive and time-consuming!"

Also, don't blame RIV. Riv is just a company named Livingston International that operates RIV for TC and doing whatever TC tells them. Check out "about RIV" at RIV.ca. All blame should be going to Transport Canada. They should state CMVSS114 is equivalent to FMVSS114 period.

I to have a 2008 Tacoma made after Sept/07. I got lucky I guess, I imported with no issues on Oct 22/07.
What was involved in changing your speedometer? Did a dealer do it? How expensive was it?

Now that my truck is on the inadmissable list, even though I have it fully licensed and plated and have received my RIV decal, does anyone know if I can have any issues down the road?

    Thanks

    This will be good fun!

A peaceful information session at Oakville Honda, Sat. Dec. 8, starting at 11am.

A chance to get together, meet, greet, see some nice purchases, educate, and draw attention to what a million threadviewers have embraced as a very serious issue.

I have read many passionate posts expressing our collective disgust/disappointment.

Please consider sharing an hour of your time for a worthwhile cause. Time to be un-Canadian and take action! Bring friends!

If possible, bring your newly imported US vehicle (we should have a sign for it, stating the $X,000 you saved in the USA), sharing your story and thoughts with other Canadians.

Our power is in numbers and in clearly and convincingly telling our story, having it spread and heard by the major media, and thus hopefully enacting beneficial change/stop the gouging!.

One hundred plus RFDers and their friends will certainly command some media attention, which likely will be more than a small $500 newspaper ad will bring (imho).

Inform the media, and let them provide our free advertising to effectively get the word out to Canadians.

We need to raise some $$, ? $300-$400 (?estimate) to have the right number of professional looking signs/pancartes made, for our peaceful protesters, to place in our successsful imports, and for informative flyers to be handed out to passers by (with appropriate web references). Just some ideas I am bouncing off people.... Would canvassing the US Subaru dealers for $100 each be fair....

I have a Honda S2000 which I will bring with a sign indicating I actually paid $20,000 CDN extra for it...thank you Honda!

fell free to copy paste this into other suitable web forums please

    1000 people would be great!!!!

    Thanks Caramel regarding PM.

Congrats shawnd3 on your import. You are lucky that you beat the admissible changes. But with the way things are going, maybe TC will review RIV's import work and say RIV shouldn't have let yours be imported since it was after Sept 1 /07. Cross your fingers. The guys at carswithoutborders.com know all about it.

Ok, regarding the speedo or instrument cluster. Check out tacomaworld.com (I think I said tacomanation before but I was mixing it up with toyotanation.com) and search for "cluster." Some guy did a wicked right up on how to remove your cluster (very simple, I did it in < 1/2 hour) and swap out the backlight LED's for different colors. I didn't do the color change. I just followed the instructions on removing the cluster. Try parts places recomended at tacomaworld to get a cluster. I got mine off of ebay for cheap and a new one costs over $400. Did you do the DRL mod?

I am in Toronto, Canada and am looking to import a 2006 or 2007 (Manufactured before August 2007) Highlander Hybrid AWD/4WD Limited edition from USA.

For importing to Canada, the following is the list of things I will ask the dealer. Can you please help me to know if I am missing something?

    1. Recall Clearance Letter with the 17 digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) included in the letter.
    a. The letter must come from the OEM's head office and be written on official company letterhead with manufacturer's logo, duly signed with the name and position of the official at the OEM clearly visible.
    b. In some cases, Border Securities of Canada will also accept a printout from an authorized American dealer but NOT A RESELLER. The head office of the manufacturer can be contacted to confirm the authorized dealership.

    2. The vehicle must bear a manufacturer's valid U.S. statement of compliance label/Federal compliance sticker and not have undergone any alterations
    3. Valid alpha-numeric 17-digit VIN
    4. Manufacturer's cargo capacity label
    5. Metric speedometer and odometer labels and Daytime running lights
    6. French supplementary restraint system label for airbags that require periodic maintenance

    Thanks in advance,
    JP

Thanks for the post (o3terminator) - I have been told by a third party that the positioning of the unit is the only difference. Aparently the Canadian standard says it must take a theif more than 5 minutes to go into the dash and disarm the car.

I don't know what the american standard is. I hope for the boys at T.C. it is 4.5 minutes!

Some manufacturers, not in writing or on the record, have been quoted as saying this is the difference!

But if the company is true to form and follows strict documentation and safety control, they would have issued an "installation Bulliten" to all their service techs to ensure they would know how locate the units, in order to repare. ISO standards dictate that this must be done!

Anyone seen these instructions!! Especially for those cars built in Canada on the same production line! I wonder if this is all a big hoax!

This is an excellent question and you should be calling the RIV see www.riv.ca

I would insist that you get it in writing because they have a tendency to change their minds. It is not the folks working the phone lines or even middle management. They are being flip-flopped by Transportation Canada..

I think quite a few folks at www.carswithoutborders.com might even be willing to help you out. Sell the car you have now and buy a 2008 Honda coupe ex or dx.. you might even get someone or a few folks to help you with the financing.
