Just an FYI, GST is charged on top of Duty. Therefore, as an example, if you vehicle is built outside North America and you paid $10000US (assuming even exchange rate) = $10 000CDN. Then you would pay $610 (6.1% duty) = $10610 + A/C charge of $100 (if the vehicle has Air conditioning) = $10710, then you would pay GST (5%) on $10710 (not $10 000) = $535.50, so the total cost owing at the boarder would be $1245.50.

They weren't very responsive to me when I crossed the boarder, probably just tired of getting the same questions over and over and over again. However, I did not find they gave me "attitude" at the boarder, they just ignored me, did what they had to do gave me my paper work and I left.

As for the 72 hour deal. The counting is not 3 full business days, it is 72 hours. Unlike other US boarder offices which open 24/7, the Queenston/Lewiston bridge is only open M-F 8-4. However, they only require a fax copy of the title (not the original) 72 hours prior to crossing the boarder with the vehicle. I faxed my title to the Queenston/Lewiston bridge on Thursday at 3:30pm and confirmed with them on the phone (same day) that as long as they had received the fax prior to noon on Friday, I was able to bring my vehicle across the boarder between noon and 4pm the following Monday, definitely not 72 "business" hours before crossing the boarder.

Correct, purchasing and importing a Chrysler vehicle (Dodge/Jeep included) into Canada will cause your warranty to be invalid on both sides of the boarder.

"Hey guys sorry to beat a dead horse on this issue....I've searched the forum and found something in regards to a cbsa tariff 98500.0.0 or something...Just trying to find out what the policy is on privately selling an imported truck? time frame? also I believe there are some fee's associated to do this when notifying cbsa? every $10K or something? I'm not and not looking to be a dealer (i.e. many vehicles) just trying to find out the policy on a private sale(s). "

Anyone have any information on this question? it would be appreciated!

    Thanks!

Looking to buy new Toyota Sienna in Florida for exporting/importing into Canada.
How can I avoid paying sales tax twice ( in Florida then again in Ontario when I register it there) ? Toyota has corporate policy ( agreement with Canadian distributors) not to export (flat bed) to border. Good news is that Toyota will honour warranty in Canada.

There is a Canadian Warranty company that can provide zero-deductible bumper to bumper warranties for 5 years 105,000 km good anywhere in Canada for $1,500

Usually the savings are great enough to pay for the extended warranty

Let me know if you want any info

I have not had any difficulty with any Chrysler products other than needing an extended warranty

I'm looking for a toyota dealer in the states that will sell a new vehicle to me. I've contacted a couple via email thus far and they have all said that they do not sell vehicles that are going to be exported to Canada. If anybody has the name of a toyota dealer it would be helpful.
  • hacheyimportshacheyimports Member Posts: 69
Good luck. In all seriousness, Toyota has managed to almost completely stop exports of new vehicles into Canada...well directly from dealerships that is.

I utilize an American agent to purchase, title then resell to my clients..and it is the only way. There have been some dealers who have offered me full MSRP and a bit of a wait to buy directly, but that is well over what we can buy them for with middle man included.

Everyone wants Toyota...they have done a great job of establishing a dedicated customer base. Incredible really.

    Take care

So i just wired the money for a 2005 tundra on Monday. So say the toyota dealer have the money in there account Wednesday, can i have them fax me the title, bill of sale and the recall letter and then in turn fax that off to the US border office or do i have to wait for the documents to be fedexed to me? Also any one know how strict they are at the Pacific Crossing in Blaine WA? If i fax the documents on on thursday afternoon will i be able to bring the truck across on Tuesday of the next week? Anyone know if the US/Canada export/import border office are open Good Friday/Easter Monday?

    Thanks
  • 2008highlander2008highlander Member Posts: 24
I have only crossed and the Queenston/Lewiston Bridge in NY state. However, he is a link to the US boarder office a the Pacific Crossing in Blaine, WA.

    Blaine Crossing

Here is the export vehicle office information in Blaine, WA.
    Name: Vehicle Export Office
    Phone: (360) 332-2632
    Fax: (360) 332-2639
    Operational Hours: 8:00 AM-3:30 PM(Pacific)
    Weekdays (Monday-Friday)

So it looks like they are only open Monday to Friday. I'd suggest calling them to confirm how far in advance they need a copy of the title and if they will accept a fax copy. Example, boarder office at Queenston/Lewiston only needs a copy of the title, they did not need a copy of the bill of sale or recall letter (the Canadian side does).

Where approximately are you located? Would you consider any dealer in the US? Or are you looking at a local pick-up or considering shipping it closer to the boarder you are crossing?
  • 2008fjcruiser2008fjcruiser Member Posts: 2
I'm looking pretty much anywhere. We're planning on flying down (whereever) and driving back ourselves.

Cool, well, I'd rather provide the information privately rather then on a forum, just so the dealer is more protected. If you click on your own name beside your post, then click on visit my carspace page. This site will create an email address for you and I can email the information to your mailbox. Confirm when it's done and I'll email the info to you.

Alternative, you can click on my name and go to mycarspace and send me a message where you want me to email you the info.

Hi all, I have read through many pages on this post and am still looking for some answers...more so clarification.

I am in the process of buying a new Jeep out of Texas and registering it at a friends place in Montana as to avoid sales tax. I would then be driving back home (after 4 weeks for the title to be mailed to my friends address) with all the paper work and then registering the vehicle in Canada.

Question, is this a legitimate route? Will there be any snags at the boarder with a vehicle bought in Texas (with temp dealer tag/licence plate) and registered in Montana?? The dealer says it is not a problem as well as saying the warranty will still be good as it was registered in the states first.

Also, the proof of recall clearance document, can the dealer request that for me or do I have to get that? Is there a cost for that?

I need to get this sorted ASAP as I am looking at driving back end of April which dosn't leave much time for the registration to get sorted out (receive title)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

Just a heads up. The administrators of the ecoAUTO Rebate Program have sent me a denial for the rebate on the grounds that "The vehicle was not purchased/leased from a Canadian Dealership". As far as I am aware the program, when announced, did not state that the vehicles had to be bought from a Canadian Dealer and enquiries of Transport Canada and lawyers have not been able to determine any authority for such denial. The subject vehicle is a Toyota Prius 2007 model bought new and imported July 2007.
Does anyone else have a similar experience and any success in finding any authority for the actions of the administrators of the program? Has anyone been successful in getting the rebate on qualifying privately imported vehicles?
I have also checked the forums on www.carswithoutborders.com which is not able to provide any additional information to that stated above.

Rather than going to the US to purchase your Toyota, have you compared the US pricing to the Canadian pricing? I was considering purchasing a new Sequoia and in anticipation of the new model, wrote some emails to Toyota suggesting there was no good reason why the Canadian pricing should be more than the US. To my pleasant surprise, the new Sequoia pricing is very close to the US pricing. Especially considering the Platinum model, for eg. does not have any options, everything is included in the $59,900 price. And of course, no warranty hassles.

Of course, after test driving the new model, I was disappointed in it and instead, purchased an '07 Escalade that an importer/broker had brought into Canada.

Everything you have done sounds good. You should have no problems at either side of the boarder when you cross. You will have to either fax/mail the title to the US boarder 72 hours prior to crossing. You will either present/pick-up your title on the US side of the boarder before crossing. You will have to declare the vehicle for import on the Canadian side of the boarder. You will pay $100 A/C tax and GST at the Canadian office, based on the US purchase price after conversion to CDN$ at the boarder office. You will receive a receipt of payment and off you go. When you get home you go to the RIV.ca site and complete the rest of the process.

Warranty: It does not matter if the vehicle was first purchased/titled in the US prior to being imported into Canada. Jeep/Chrysler/Dodge will not honour the warranty on either side of the boarder as soon as you import the vehicle into Canada. Some dealers my not notice it is a US vehicle and will do warranty work, however, this is becoming rarer as more and more vehicles are being imported in to Canada everyday.

Recall letter: No there is no cost from Jeep/Chrysler/Dodge for recall letters. The dealership should be able to get one for you. However, since there is a 4 week lag period between purchase and import, I would suggest you call Jeep Canada yourself, provide them your VIN and get a copy of the recall letter from them closer to the time you are importing.

    Hi Northerniwi,

The is absolutely correct the ecoAuto Rebate Program is only on new hybrid vehicles purchased from a Canadian Dealership. The ecoAuto Rebate Program does not provide any rebate on hybrid vehicles imported from the US. I have also heard in the news recently that the Federal government is considering fazing this program out over the next year or so.

However, if your Province provides a rebate for hybrid vehicles, such as Ontario's Retail Sales Tax application for rebate on vehicles powered by alternative fuels. The province will provide a rebate on the RST paid, up to a maximum. For example, Ontario's maximum RST rebate is $2000.

I'm looking at importing an RX350, does anyone know what modifications are required on this model?
  • robersharobersha Member Posts: 3
Thanks for the peace of mind.

Another thing I overlooked is that I have to actually go to a DMV in Montana to pick up plates. Now my new concern, can I register a vehicle in Montana with a Montana address and an Alberta drivers licence? If so, would they care or need to know that it is a friends place and not mine? would custumes care??

Anyone out there gone through this???

    Thanks again!
  • usacars2canadausacars2canada Member Posts: 14
No modifications are required. We have imported some Lexus RX350 (with premium plus package) and they all passed the Canadian Tire inspection easily.

In case you are not aware, the premium plus package and premium package on an RX350 are different.

    Hiya,

I wonder if any of you have brought over a Mercedes you bought from the US to Ontario.

I am wondering a round about price they are going to charge me to make it Canadianized :shades: I have heard $1000, $40000 and $9000 (gulp)

I have talked to MB Canada and MB service in Oakville and no one can tell me a straight answer. (basically don't want cars coming in)

So if anyone knows anything can you let me know please. :)

    Thank you.

    Does this help?

I can get you VIN numbers if that would help.

    Thank you soooo much ;)

I am sorry to tell you that I was unable to get an exact price. It is dependent on a few things, but basically you can expect the bumpers ( 2mph rather than Canadian 6mph rated ) the instrument panel and DTRLights..the bumpers can be very costly....

I would budget for $5,000 and hope to be pleasantly suprised with $3,000.00.

Hoping to have better news for you, but MBenz is in the cat bird seat and do not have to accomodate anyone but themselves. The service folks I talk with haven't dealt with the models you posted, but best guess is the above numbers.

Lots of shops do not have the service managers in on the weekend...I will try and get a more specific quote for you early in the week.

Take care and good luck with your imports.

Has anyone exported a vehicle through this crossing? My understanding is that U.S. Customs wants a single sheet of paper faxed to them 72 hrs before the vehicle is exported with a copy of the front of the vehicle title on it and "Attn: Vehicle Export" on top???? Anyone comment?

I have heard several different things but this is what they say when you call them. I'm exporting a car next Sunday through there and don't want to make any mistakes?

Can anyone help? Has anyone exported through this crossing?

    Hello,

I'm confused why each P.O.E has different requirements? Does anyone know the exact requirements for US Customs, 72 hrs in advance at the Ambassador Bridge crossing? My understanding is all they want sent ahead is a copy of the front of the vehicle title.

    Anyone?

Get this information directly from the US customs and Border Protection Export page http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/export/export_docs/motor_vehicle.xml

Elsewhere on the CBP site you will find their Ports of Entry data - addresses, tel & fax numbers, names of officers, hours of operation.

That's much more reliable than asking here.
