I recently attended a ride and drive for the new BMW 7 series. The car that we were in was equipped with the full lane and traffic monitoring system including accident mitigation. We were in heavy NJ traffic and our driver, when attempting a last minute lane change, narrowly escaped a collision when a SUV panic stopped in front of us. The person driving our car barely realized what had happened. The car simply deferred the lane change, safely steering back into it's lane, fully retarding the throttle and applied the brakes to the complete stop well short of the SUV. I believe that had our car not been so equipped that we would likely have at least clipped the SUV. While I'm not a huge fan of some of the driver nannies that are emerging of late, in this instance I was very impressed.

It's important to note that not all crash avoidance systems are alike.

Question is: if your radar controlled tennis ball always cleared the net, would you ever become a better tennis player?

So avoiding the frontal collision with these robotic systems , you increase your chances of being rear ended or run over by a 18- wheeler on the interstate.

    Dumb systems for stupid drivers.

Actually, quite the opposite, in two respects.

    1) You realize, I hope, that the avoidance system only does what you would have done IF you were paying attention. Avoiding a frontal collision by braking, especially on the interstate, will decrease the chances of being rear ended. You may or may not stop when avoided (slow to avoid, then continue), you certainly will stop if not avoided.

    2) Good systems for smart drivers [non-permissible content removed]:)

When you are not the only one using the road, highway or interstate , these nanny systems will have a greater chance of killing you or injuring you by other drivers who do not use these nanny systems.
BMW systems are not the industry standard. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.
