sbrown2, Here is a link to a site that makes a Nav kit which disables the "I Agree" function for the Prius. They make some other useful kits as well...don't know if they will work on the Avalon but you may want to check:
I am waiting for an '06 to hit my local dealer...I know once I get one I'll be checking out this kit myself. Let us all know what you find out. Great forum here, I have been reading and educating myself on the Avalon before I go get it.
Thanks for pointing that out. I guess I'm still in the "getting used to it" phase. Eventually, I'm sure this won't be a problem. I'm just somewhat disappointed since I always thought that the 01 ~ 04 trunk not coming up too high was a very nice touch.

These are for the 2004 model year taken from The Dupont Automobile Paint Survey. Peace
I had the XM mounted in the middle of the back of the trunk next to the window, wish I could figure a way to get it in the roof like the accord.
Absolutely agree. I was naive when I ordered mine, assuming that Toyota had it together regarding antenna and placement. I mean, if Honda had an integrated XM antenna, surely Toyota would do the same, especially when you purchase a vehicle in the $30K price range - was I floored when our salesman drove our Blizzard White LTD with the black blob on the right edge of the trunklid!!! At first I seriously thought it was a joke. Simply no thought went into the location or method of mount - I expected alot more from Toyota.
I wish it could be integrated on the roof like the Accord; I drove an Odyssey van loaner while waiting for the Avalon which had XM but to this day I don't know where the antenna was - it was no where to be seen. Why can't Toyota pull that off?
Since then I've mounted mine up on the front dash near the defroster vent - I do get slight signal loss but it's very irregular. zekeman1
To me the trunk barely coming up in the older models was much more of a hazard. I hate to admit it, but I drove off with the triunk open on more than one occasion.
I would like to know how many of you have had your dealer fix your loose fog lamps. My service advisor said they cost about $600 and he didn't think Toyota would want to cover them because they were not a problem. I would like to tell him about all the people who have had them fixed. Also, I wrote a letter to Toyota and mentioned all the little things that have been mentioned here and that I have noticed about my car and I got a personal phone call thanking me for my letter. The lady said they really do read all the letters they get and value customer input. Maybe some changes will be made if enough people write. I sent it to the address that someone else posted on this forum. I love my car though. Only problems are the distorted rear windshield and the loose fog lamps - oh - and the seats are not as comfortable as my 2000 Avalon seats were.
Regarding the navigational system, you are absolutely correct. The Prius uses a touch screen and the Avalon uses the joystick. I spent 2 hours at my dealer discussing my Avalon's nav system with a technically competent individual who was trained with a program similar to the Lexus program you mentioned. Also, as you mentioned, it was a tutorial on a touchscreen system...NOT the joystick. As a matter of fact, mine was the first joystick system he has encountered and he was unable to help me. Toyota apparently has no tutorials for their staff on Avalon's joystick system. As it turns out, the screens are different enough such that his experience with the touchscreen system was of no value in helping me. I love my Avalon, but I am totally confused as to why Toyota put the touchscreen in the Prius, but chose the outdated joystick navigational system in their flagship model. The touchscreen is far easier to learn and use than is the joystick....AND....there are folks trained on the touchscreen who can help you. I have a friend with a Prius and I was shocked and quite irritated when my Avalon arrived with an inferior nav system. Even Honda uses the touchscreen....sheesh!
MobileCx or http://www.mobilecx.com/index.html offers various types of mounts for a number of different portable devices/laptops. You can start by using the "Search by Device" feature and putting in Garmin Street Pilot.
I bought a Garmin 2620 two years ago and bought my windshield mount from them.
The place I bought my GPS from also offers RAM Mounts. The store is GPS City and they have a section for mounts made by RAM. RAM my offer the configuration that you need if Mobile CX doesn't have it, but you have to figure out the components that you need.
Toyota has been considering changing from the touch-screen because of complaints about fingerprints and such on the thouchscreen models that make the screen hard to read. Plus on the Avalon, the screen is further away, so harder to reach.
There is another message on the trunk about no key. I find that a problem for me. I am one of those urbanites who has to carry lawnmower gasoline, etc., in my trunk. I worry about an electrical short in the trunk release setting off a big fire.
There is a real good light duty instructions re the Avalon, including the navigation system. I read this several times and when I got my car I was more familiar than the salesman. The address is My New Avalon.com Ange1
Do loose fog lights need to be replaced or just tightened? The dealer told me to bring it back this Saturday to have them tightened since mine were loose on delivery.
This may be a really dumb question, but does anyone know if the DLCC is covered under warranty if it's impacted by objects on the road (rocks, etc.)? I guess things like headlamps are not covered, but DLCC seems somewhat different.
Also, how many people really get the DLCC smashed by road objects? Is this a frequent occurrance or something that happens to, say, 1 out of every 500 people? Mackabee? Ken?
I don't know of any warranty coverage that would cover impacts. This is normally something that would be covered under your insurance as it is technically a "collision" or impact. I personally have not heard of a customer personally that have had a problem with it, but it is in a relatively exposed area low on the front bumper.
I for one, am quite pleased with the joystick control in the Avalon. The location is well placed when accessing the system. One doesn't have to "reach out" for any changes, as your arm essentially rests across the console.
Prior to purchasing the Ltd I spent many hours researching OEM navigation systems (our van has a Garmin), no doubt to the dismay of many a salesperson.
One vehicle we looked at was an '05 Odyssey. A 45 minute stint in that (sitting on the lot learning the nav system) was enough to convince me that perhaps touch screen may not always be the answer. I simply got tired of reaching out to make changes. Of course, one will not spend a continuous 45 minutes changing any nav functions, but I did learn the system quite well which was the purpose.
The double-edged sword, for me, is that I prefer the screen location essentially in the line-of-sight to the road (mounted high) like the Odyssey, Acuras, and Avalon, but do not like reaching across to control it.
For safety reasons I would not purchase a car with a navigation screen that is mounted lower in the dash (and many a high end car have them there) which completely takes the road out of your line-of-sight.
I can live with the nuances and limitations of the Avalon nav. It is slower to input information than the Acura touch screen, the screen is slightly smaller, voice commands aren't perfect, and it may not have as many POI's. And, yes, the hateful "agree" screen!
However, I find the Avalon screen clearer and the integration of voice commands is great (given the limitations).
Perfect, no, but the Acura nav is not perfect either. All in all, I am very pleased with the Avalon system and would not be without it. It does nearly everything I want, except find post offices.
Now, how did I veer off the joystick topic ..........?
Mackabee, this is not a big deal in my opinion, but you are not being fair or objective here. While what you say is accurate, it is still possible to press the wrong button. Like every GM car I ever owned, the trunk release should be disabled while the vehicle is in gear. It just makes sense. You might want to pass that along to Toyota.
"Mackabee, this is not a big deal in my opinion, but you are not being fair or objective here. While what you say is accurate, it is still possible to press the wrong button."
Yeah, Mackabee, remember there's some old codgers driving these cars..
I had the XM mounted in the middle of the back of the trunk next to the window, wish I could figure a way to get it in the roof like the accord.
zeckeman1 My XM was Dealer installed. The antenna is mounted center roof just above the rear wondow. The cable is run under the window seal strip. Looks good, I think.
I work at a financial firm with access to the various newswires. Toyota just announced @ 1:20 EDT that the price increase on the Avalon is going to be $275 (about .9%)
Thanks for the tip. I googled "2006 Avalon" and got that financial newswire report. I won't post it all here but Toyota announced prices for several models, including the Sienna, Tacoma.
"The Avalon with a base MSRP ranging from $26,625 for the XL, to $33,815 for the Limited, an increase of $275 or 0.9 percent."
Att: douglas1 Note: I am not sure there is enough safe clearance from the top of license to the outer edge of the bumper(only 1-1/2 inches) to mount the Grota sensor. The thing is sure to get hit by another auto and I suspect the it would be very expensive to replace. The way the 05 Avalon bumper is designed, I am not sure any license plate type sensor mounting would be home free. Go with Awell I guess.
No. A poster here indicated the third week of August. I have spoken to two "salesmanagers". One lied and said "next year." The other send in the fall. My guess is in September/October.
I was trying to see what changes, if any, were made to the vehicle. I doubt that there would be any changes. There was nothing but those two lines that I posted previously. The Sienna and 4 runner will have some changes for 06.
This suits my time frame well. I acually don't plan on buying anything until November and December. I know there will be some discounts at that time since the vehicle will be 2 model years old.
Hey koondog. I posted earlier that my 06 LTD is do for delivery the third week of August. I'm dealing with an old friend who is also the dealer principal so I doubt that I'm getting bad info. He ordered mine two weeks ago against his first 06 allocations. Hope this helps.
The husband of a girl that works with my wife is a salesman at the local Toyota dealer. They know I'm interested in the '06 Avalon because I stopped in to see them shortly after the '05 came out. They mentioned to my wife that they are expecting to get 9 new '06 Avalons on Monday August 1st. Of course, I got this from my wife who got it from the salesman's wife who got it from the salesman, so it is possible something got misinterpreted along the way. I guess we'll find out for sure in a couple of days.
Thanks for the information. I will keep an eye out at a local dealership to see if anything is coming in. The frustrating part is that I sent five emails and made several telephone calls out to people, and only one person replied back to me. Toyota dealerships around here seem to have poor customer service-since they never get back to you or reply to your email. They have attitude.
I did have one give me a quote of $25,183 plus taxes and fees (about 10% in CA) for a 2005 XL.
That's too bad. I can definitely see why you'd be frustrated after all that. At least you finally ended up with what seems to be a good quote on the XL. Does that price include any options? I'm looking for an XL also. I haven't gone as far as getting quotes yet because I'm waiting for the '06s. I'll probably stop by the local dealer next week and see what they say. I'll keep you posted.
It appears to me that, if you would want an XL or XLS, dealers are quite ready to deal (pun intended) on 2005's. I would think you could negotiate a price UNDER invoice because they are really wanting to make room for the 2006's and there is no difference between the two model years. It doesn't appear to be the same case for the LTD's, however, as there seems to be very few of those around.
Thanks for that insight, Ken. I guess I can appreciate their thinking. I have only one problem with that...if Toyota is switching back to the joystick from the touchscreen, why have they not gone one step further by providing the technical experts with computer tutorials targeted at using the joystick. As I mentioned earlier, THE SOURCE for navigator questions at my Toyota dealer was clueless as to how to help me because no tutorials exist for the joystick system, and they do not have a car in stock with this system so that he can familiarize himself with it. Perhaps I could enter my question here and some kind soul could clue me in on a remedy.
When you are cruising along, the "Current Position Vehicle Mark" (CPVM) is at the center of the screen and the map is constantly shifting to keep the CPVM icon at the center of the screen. If you choose to press the up-arrow on the joystick to move the map in the direction of where you will eventually be, the CPVM disappears off the screen (of course). Once you have found the road you are looking for, you want to restore the screen to the state it was in before pressing the joystick up-arrow. If you press the down arrow, shifting the map to get the CPVM back on the screen, it does not stay there for long. Now the CPVM moves and the map stays stationary such that the CPVM eventually disappears off the screen.
Any thoughts on how to get the CPVM to stay centered on the screen? Thanks, Jeff
You should've received a coupon book from Toyota when you purchased your Avy. In it there's a 90 day XM certificate if you purchase the unit from Toyota. When I purchased mine Toyota was giving away one year certificates if you added the XM service
Just a follow up on this question. When I went to the dealer they were not aware of any free trial offer. Nor did I receive any type of coupon booklet. I did get some XM brochures. I got a basic info brochure and also a "Quick Reference Guide". The only thing mentioned anywhere is about taking a no risk "Test Drive" with XM. It says: 'sign up for XM anytime during your trial subscription and you won't be charged until the end of your "test drive"'. Is this what ytou're talking about? I've also emailed XM and am waiting for their response. Thanks for any help/input.
Thanks JL, for your in-depth response to my post. Now I guess I don't feel so bad owning the joystick version since you've explained the pros and cons of both the touchscreen and joystick versions. I would feel much better if there were ANY support at all out there for us joystick users. I've had quite a few questions which I've managed to answer myself after countless hours of experimentation, but one remains and I posted it in my reply to Ken, but I'll copy/paste it below to see if you might be willing to provide me with an answer: When you are cruising along, the "Current Position Vehicle Mark" (CPVM) is at the center of the screen and the map is constantly shifting to keep the CPVM icon at the center of the screen. If you choose to press the up-arrow on the joystick to move the map in the direction of where you will eventually be, the CPVM disappears off the screen (of course). Once you have found the road you are looking for, you want to restore the screen to the state it was in before pressing the joystick up-arrow. If you press the down arrow, thereby shifting the map to get the CPVM back on the screen, the CPVM does not stay there for long. Now the CPVM moves and the map stays stationary such that the CPVM eventually disappears off the screen.
Any thoughts on how to get the map moving again such that the CPVM stays centered on the screen? Thanks, Jeff
There were a couple of other posts regarding getting the indicator to center again. Also, from my own "playing" with the system in the Avalon, the system is almost identical to the one in the other vehicles Toyota makes, just instead of using the touch screen, it's like using your cell phone for hitting different buttons. The tutorial they gave (through Toyota's online training) was extremely helpful. Personally, I think it would be worthwile for Toyota to give a CD or DVD with a tutorial with each vehicle that has a NAV system. If you ask, your salesperson may be able to log into the system Toyota has to let you take the tutorial "course" which takes about 30 minutes relating to the NAV systems. It's generic to all of the Toyota systems, but may be helpful.
Sounds like that's a really good price. I hope you're able to do as well on the 2006 when it comes time for you to buy! I'll probably be buying sooner rather than later. My current car is a '98 Chevy and it's been having one problem after another including the transmission which they estimate will cost $2,000 to fix. Fortunately, my wife has a reliable '97 Corolla, so we've been using that more and more. It's a great car, but it will be nice to have something that has the roominess of the Avalon. Take Care and best of luck to you, too!
go to the "Voice-Activated Navigation" section and click on the "View Tutorial: DVD Navigation System" link. It is a virtually identical with the Avalon system in function, although it has a touch screen for user input.
Hi jicka!! Yes, the Magellan Roadmate does look like a great system also. It has a lot of the same features, although it does cost about $200.00 more than the Garmin. I also have been concerned about systems with a hard drive as to their long term reliability. Thanks for the reply! regards, gladiator99
Hello again all, I'm still waiting on my Avalon Limited in Blizzard Pearl with Ivory interior to be "swapped" --- I'm thinking now I might should renegotiate the deal and opt for a 2006 model --- after reading that they "might" be hitting the showrooms within a few weeks ?
Anyway, was browsing dealer inventory here in the DC area and read the forum trying to find a Toyota VIN decoder (found it!!! Thanks) and stumbled across the 2006 color chart and thought I would share it with everyone:2006 Toyota Color chart
It does appear by looking at the 2006 chart that the Avalon colors are not changing and there are no new additions - as anticipated !
Also, here is the link for the "whats in a VIN page":VIN glossary
And here is the link to the "VIN Decoder page":VIN Decoder
Now, I'm sure I didn't do all of the URL titles correct, but I hope this helps everyone. Looking very much forward to getting my Avalon Ltd, as you might remember, I am the 14 year loyal (not anymore !!!) Infiniti Q45 customer.
Give me your thoughts about how you would recommend renegotiating the "dealer swap" on the Ivory interior (none in sight yet, after 8 days) for a 2006 instead and not losing the $1k deposit.
Have a Toyota purchased and Toyota Dealer installed XM radio in my new Limited. The music and options are fantastic, BUT the words telling you what is playing only shows the first 10 characters. My wife has a portable XM radio, and the title, artist, show, or whatever scrolls through the whole name. Any ideas on how to make the one in the car do this.
