Regarding some earlier discussion of people giving up on the wait for a Prius and getting the Civic hybrid instead...

Another thing that might influence that decision is the going price difference. I have received internet quotes from 3 dealers in the LA area for the HCH CVT for $18,700 before fees and tax. It's not because they're not selling. One dealer had a one-month wait but still honored that price.

Yes, enterprise do rent Priuses. I once talk to a guy parked beside me in a Prius. I asked him how he liked it and he said it was OK but it was a rental. It was a temporary rental while his car is being repaired. $20 a day for this base model.

I believe the GPS aspect of the car is xmitted thru the antenna along with the AM/FM. A word of note: When I entered a car wash once in Oregon I decided to remove the antenna for safety knowing it's function capabilities. I realized I didn't have a wrench but got it off with my hand strength. If I can remove it by hand...so can anyone else. Perhaps a little tightening may be in order. I'm sure that little rascal isn't cheap to replace.

I just wonder if rental companies like Enterprise made commitments to buy some Priuses before Toyota knew what a sales hit it would be. I can't fathom Toyota selling them to rental fleets now, when their dealers can get MSRP for every single one and their customers are waiting months to get one.

Backy, I think you misunderstood or I didn't make my self clear enough....I just meant that lack of consistency was not an issue with the Prius since apparently your experience has been that it is consistent.

Stevedebi, actually you make my point --if you live in an area where gas stations are few and far between, when the gauge tells you the tank is near empty, you shouldn't chance running out of gas by continuing to nonchalantly drive around for miles and miles afterwards. If the gauge reads "E" when you're passing by one of those isolated gas stations --pull in. If you're half-way between stations, then pull in to the next station. You'll have plenty of gas left in the Prius to get you there regardless of whether you have 1 gallon (50 mile range), 2 gallons (100 mile range), 3 gallons (150 mile range), etc., etc., in reserve.

I think we'll just have to agree to disagree. If you and Backy feel the need to worry about the consistency of the reserve, knock yourself out. As for Rich and I, we'll just happily remain oblivious to how much gas is left after the "E."

I just checked in with my local Toyota dealer to see how the Prius list was moving. I was told that they had "Great News" for me, two #9 cars were available and I should come on down. Well my wife and I zipped down to our dealer and discovered that they did indeed have two #9 Prius. These were "special purchases" they received from another dealer (hummm... why would anyone trade out a Prius). They had extra window tinting and Deluxe Chrome wheels. All of the extras added another $3,650 to the price! I was encouraged to buy these great deals since the dealer is only expecting 8 cars total for the year.

I let the dealer now that I am not the Chrome wheel kind of guy, maybe leather seats, but not Chrome. Then he wanted to know if I would take the car if he traded out the wheels for leather seats.

    Needless to say, we left.

I was very disappointed to see such a markup on this vehical. I'm glad that I don't need to replace either car just yet. So I'll be holding out.

I have no experience with the Prius' gas gauge yet. I have one on order. I was speaking of my experience with gas gauges on other cars.

And I will not have a Prius - too small for me. I was referring to posts by Prius owners and comparing it to my vehicles.

There is an article at www.cnn.com today about the perils of rescuing people from hybrids.
  • mfullmermfullmer Member Posts: 773
It's good to see that the rescue folks are learning new techniques in this "new-tech" world! The article didn't really focus much on the "perils of rescuing people from Hybrids" as it did on how the rescuers are having to learn how to deal with the rescues and what and what not to do.

SAC are a bigger issue than that.

Extra precaution does not hurt. HSD will switch off 500 volt electricity from the circuit breaker even before the airbags are deployed in the event of an accident.

Manufacturers say they will continue to keep rescue personnel up to date on their hybrids. But they also contend that hybrids can be seen as safer than regular cars.

"Everybody's concerned about the electrical side, but could you imagine if we tried to bring gasoline out today as a motor fuel?" Peterson said.

CNN article left out those paragraphs that contains in http://customwire.ap.org/dynamic/stories/H/HYBRID_CAR_RESCUES?SIT- - - - E=MTGRE&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

"They know not to cut into a hybrid's doors - that's where many of the cables are - and to peel off the roof instead."

Prius is safe to cut through the door and the roof. The electric line is under the car. See http://techinfo.toyota.com/public/main/2ndprius.pdf
Maybe Honda Civic Hybrid has electric lines inside the doors?

  • stevedebistevedebi Member Posts: 4,098
Ummmm, those airbags run off the regular electirical circuit, not the 500v, right?

However, in an accident, anything can go, including shorted wires and crossed circuits.
  • usbseawolf2000usbseawolf2000 Member Posts: 759
I don't know in detail how airbags work. I believe they release nitrogen gas into the bag. So, probably by chemical reaction rather than with electricity.

    Dennis
  • stevedebistevedebi Member Posts: 4,098
It is a chemical reaction, but something has to trigger the reaction, and I'm guessing it is an electrical charge.

I was making a joke; it would be a major catch-22 if the airbags required the 500v and the 500v shut off before deploying the airbags.

The following is an explanation of how they work (it is a mechanical switch that activates an electrical circuit):

Side airbag curtains. Sorry, I guess there is no standard acronym for that!

I would be interested to hear from any Prius owners who have small children in the family. How well do car seats fit in the back seat (and in the middle or only the side positions)? Can you fit a stroller plus a load of groceries in the back? And so forth.

    Many thanks.

"I would be interested to hear from any Prius owners who have small children in the family. How well do car seats fit in the back seat (and in the middle or only the side positions)? Can you fit a stroller plus a load of groceries in the back? And so forth."

We have two children, ages 3 and 1. We purchased the Prius to be our LARGER car and the car has met all of our expectations and needs with respect to roominess. We can comfortably fit two car seats and one adult in the back seat for long drives, something we cannot do in our '99 Corolla. We can fit many (I've had more than 10) grocery bags with a stroller. Our single jogging stroller fits well with lots of room to spare but the double jogging stroller is a bit of a squeeze. Nonetheless, it fits better than it would in a trunk (even collapsed it is quite tall). Also, if you have the need for a larger haul, you can remove the car seats, collapse the back seats and really expand your cargo space.

In sum, with two kids we certainly don't feel the need to join the SUV/minivan crowd.

Incidentally, with the warmer weather in Northeast Ohio, our last 3 tanks have averaged over 50 mpg and that's with a measly commute of 5 miles! Are others seeing dramatic changes in MPG?
  • rpgolferrpgolfer Member Posts: 157
    Hi gang,
Here in the SF Bay Area we've averaged 75-85 deg for the last 3 wks and I've finally hit 50 mpg. While stuck in a traffic jam for 30 min to go 5 mi, the display read 62 mpg on the chart. Gas prices are due to go up by 25 cents this weekend. I filled up Weds and paid $2.08/gal, the avg here is $2.13 and rising....oh, the thrill of living in California. My driving rarely involves commute traffic, but it's nice to see that we can get EPA estimates. As far as storage goes, I travel solo most of the time with only my golf clubs. I can place my golf bag, a folded up 3-wheeled golf cart and accessories behind the seats and be able to pull the cover over all of it. I've yet to need to fold the rear seats, but it's nice to know the space is available.
    Safe driving,

Finally...a car company builds and markets a car that I nefits my transportation needs. My 2004 Prius!

All these years I have been bombarded by advertising and marketing schemes telling me the car that the auto manufacturers say I need. Thank God I did not get caught up in the SUV "craze".

I drive 25 miles to work. Two-thirds of it on Interstate at 75 mph and one-third on city streets. Due to warmer weather...have been averaging around 48 mpg.

I shake my head when I drive by the convenience stores and see the SUV's and Vans lined up.
  • stevedebistevedebi Member Posts: 4,098
The thing to do is to go test drive a Prius. Bring your child stuff, your stroller, and both car seats. Put it all in the car and see how you like it!

If you can't get a test drive, when it comes time to buy, insist on performing this test on the model they offer you for sale BEFORE signing any papers. Be prepared to either accept the car or walk away. You need a car that fits your needs.

Good advice. When I ordered mine (August 22nd), I was told to fork over $500 and sign on the dotted line. I paid a $250 deposit and had the contract emended such that the deposit was refundable if I did not want the car after delivery for ANY reason. This was immediately accepted by the dealer. Admittedly, I am not in a high demand area for the Prius but if you cannot drive the car before you place the deposit, you should insist that the deposit be returnable.

I need to sell my '04 Prius because of the large payments I incurred. My wife is unsure of this decision and so am I.

We love the Prius. It is much higher quality than the price would infer and the build quality is very, very good. It is an extremely solid, smooth and quiet car. The stereo is high end and the touchscreen controls are intuitive and easy to use. I've been averaging 52 - 54 MPH here in 100+ sunshine in Phoenix ona daily 70 mile commute.

We'll miss our Prius. On the bright side, two Toyota dealers tell me that there is an 18 month waiting list for a new Prius, so I should come out okay.

I'm looking for a prius in california and I'm willing to go anywhere in the state to get it... who has the best price and most inventory?
  • stevedebistevedebi Member Posts: 4,098
Sorry to hear you are having to sell it ... those payments can be really hard to make. Did your dealer require markup over MSRP?
  • stevedebistevedebi Member Posts: 4,098
I saw some posts that Fresno had a few, but that was a while back.

BTW, be prepared to pay 2 - 3K above MSRP.

Or, I just noticed a message from user "desertgrj", who is considering selling his; he lives in Phoenix. Who knows maybe you could make a deal for a slightly used one?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Are you going to try eBay? I've seen several slightly used '04 Priuses there over the past few weeks with bids near or even over MSRP.
  • rpgolferrpgolfer Member Posts: 157
    Hi gang,
Don't sell the Prius! Take out a second on the house....sell the boat....refinance if you can. Consider making your car a time-share. What color/pkg do you have? You will find a buyer right away. I was in Phoenix back in March and I didn't see too much gas price difference between Phoenix and other large metropolitan areas. Since gas prices are going up and up, I'd figure out a way to enjoy the 52-54 mpg you quoted. As mentioned before, seeing the SUV's and vans lining up for gas will certainly make you smile because you made the right decision. All due respect to your decision but we need to keep the Prius Nation strong!

  • stevedebistevedebi Member Posts: 4,098
If someone else buys the car, the "Prius Nation" won't have changed numbers a bit...

As has been repeatedly pointed out here, some people cannot afford a Prius, and have other monetary priorities, like food, education, and housing. Personally, I admire someone who can admit that they got over committed and try and rectify the situation. A car is not the end all and be all of our lives - or at least it shouldn't be.
  • desertgrjdesertgrj Member Posts: 6
I paid list for a car with #7 package, so about $24K with all the taxes, etc. I have watched eBay very closely and many cars have gone for lots of dough above list, some even over $30k. It's good to be in a position of selling a car others really want.

I appreciate all the concern. I think it over and over an over every day. My wife is really bummed so I try to figger out ways to keep it. I can afford it I just don't want to shell out the large $$ every month.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Don't sweat it. A Scion xB is fuel efficient and roomy, if you're looking for substitutes. You can get one for $14k.

Good luck selling, you shouldn't have any trouble.

I bet if you post it on Ebay you may get close to what you paid for it (maybe more??). The suggestion of getting a SCION is a great one. Just watch those options as they REALLY will make that car nearly 19 grand! The room inside is unbelievable in the Scion B.

There are no HV Power lines in the HCH doors either.

When I read that article I wondered if they even knew what they are talking about and in my mind makes the facts of the whole story kind of fishy.
If they are going to route the HV power lines through the doors of a Hybrid then why not route the gas lines there too? :-o
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi gang,
Check out the cutaway picture of the '04 Prius at: http://s87059328.onlinehome.us/images/04cutaway.jpg

This should illustrate where a lot of the hidden components are located and why you shouldn't block the vent in the back seat.

    John

I'm hoping you can help me. I just got a Bluetooth phone, and have easily set it up so that, when the car is NOT in motion, I can dial from the LCD scree, and can always receive calls, etc., and use the hands free environment. The people I talk to say it sounds great. And I uploaded my phone book from my phone, etc.

What I CANNOT figure out how to do, is what you say in your message: "So you can dial from the phone and have the Bluetooth connection automatically take over the moment dialing completes". Since Toyota doesn't let you dial when the car is in motion, I dialed the phone instead. The LCD screen shows the same info as when you're dialing via the LCD screen (i.e., the volume control shows up, the hang-up button, the mute button), but the call is NOT on the hands-free system.

Any clue as to what I'm doing wrong here? Or, maybe there is something wrong with my Prius' hands-free system, do others do this?

Thanks very much to anyone that can help with this.

Howard, if you want to contact john1701a you may have to do it another way, like through his web site (I think he has an email address somewhere on it) or Prius forum on another well-known web site (that sounds like a sound you might make if you are real happy). He said farewell to the Prius boards here awhile ago.

Mike Calvert Toyota Houston lists six(6) Prius avaialbe in various optionm packages in Houston at MSRP. But they offer a $500/$1000 Internet coupon, not sure if they apply it to the Prius.

As the other hybrids are becoming available Toyota Prius will be available first (now) at MSRP and then discounted (6-12 months)

We have had our 2004 Driftwood (10,000 miles) since mid December. We love it. My wife's car needed replacing and of course she wanted a Prius. Well, we were lucky to get ours in just 2 months waiting. Here in LA, the wait is now more like 5 months. We couldn't wait. She bought I Civic Hybrid today. It's cute. It's small, it's not a Prius. We both do a lot of driving though. It'll be fine (I keep telling myself) LOL.

thanks for the suggestion of pushing the door lock button after exiting the car. I locked the car with the remote itself; I have also locked it with the door button. Either way there is one beep indicating you have locked the doors. But there is no indication that the car might still be running even thought you have taken the smart key away. That is the problem. I suspect if you push the START button too lightly it may not really shut the car off and you don't notice. (This only happens if you use the smart key function, not if you started the car by physically inserting the key in the slot). Now I stay in the car an extra second or two after I shut it off to make sure. I just can't help it - I have to be sure :>. Mara

Many dealerships I have contacted (in Bay Area, CA) have run out of 2004 allocations and now the orders taken will be for 2005 models. Any thought of any pricing changes for 2005? Also, some dealerships are starting a list on the Highlander hybrid coming out in Dec 2004 or Jan 2005. I wonder if that would shorten the waiting lists on the Prius somewhat?

I have been working with toyota for four years and I am very excited to see the hybrids coming out. If anyone has any questions I can help them with I would be more than glad to supply any information I can. I will be checking the board daily and will try to respond with in twenty-four hours.
