Dash lights

On my 2008 BMW X-3 where the Temperature used to read right below the odometer reading it is now only a series of dashes _ _ _ _?

Why does it not read the outside temperature anymore?

A bad temperature sensor is the most likely culprit, if that is the only thing that is not working, when you scroll through the menu.
