I am going to order my RAM but I keep changing my mind about the wheels. I did read that the 20" wheels have a different ride. It sounds like other than the look the 20" wheels are not worth the price.
Be sure to check out our Town Hall chat lineup for Tuesdays... everyone is welcome and ALL things automotive (and some not-so-automotive topics) are fair game! Stop in tonight and get to know some of your fellow Town Hall residents better. We may even play a little automotive trivia!

I have both the 20" wheels and the 17" wheels. My truck came with the 20" wheels and I felt since I have a 2 wheel drive truck I wanted traction tires for winter driving. I bought a set of new take-off 17" wheels with Goodyear Wrangler GS-A tires in 265/70R17. The 17" setup rides a little softer due to the larger sidewall but it leans more in aggressive turns. I was told the GS--A Wrangler was poor in the snow but I found it to be quite acceptable for both acceleration and stopping in loose or packed snow. The 20" tires are great on dry pavement but tend to spin easily on wet or slippery pavement. It is the tread pattern and rubber compound in the LS tires. I had the Eagle LS tires on my Dakota and found them to exhibit the same problem in wet or snow.
I have grown to like the look of the 20" wheels but personally would never pay what Dodge wants for the 20" wheels if I had a choice. I bought my Ram off the lot as 2WD Rams are hard to find in Omaha and there isn't much choice. I also did not want to order and wait for the perfect truck because the dealer was really dealing at the time I bought. 99% of the Rams on the lot here are 4x4. The dealer discounted the truck the difference between the 20" wheels and the 17" aluminum wheels so I would buy it after 2 weeks of negotiations. I wore them down <grin> Rick
Dusty, I don't believe there is a significant weight difference between the 20" wheel/tire combo and the 17". The 17" wheels/tires I bought off Ebay weighed in at just over 70 lbs each. I've seen 20" setups on Ebay where the seller is saying 75 lbs shipping weight. All I know is either one can give you a hernia when you change tires. When I put my 17" wheels on for winter I'll put a 17 and 20 on a bathroom scale and see what the difference really is. Rick
I have heard from the Dodge talk, that the 6.1 will be around the "440" for hp and/or trq... It will be used in the 2500/3500 for now and the new Dodge sedan..
IMO, I have the 5.7 in a 2500... It just needs more to get the 6673lbs moving... The 4.10 gears would help... but the 6.1 Hemi will be "boss"...
Met, the one article I read said the 6.1 will be offered at 425 horsepower in the Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum, and new Dodge Charger. What it'll be in the RAM is probably something different.
JC, I haven't heard. So far the only official announcement is a release to two sedan platforms and a "future" release in the RAM.
Since Chrysler's manufacturing these power plant in only one location, I suspect that capacity is the issue. Chrysler wants to see some market growth in the car segment more than they do in the truck segment at this time. They are also trying to re-enter the police car market -- I've heard with a vengenance -- and are likely putting their resources in developing the 6.1 for cars.
But, even as far back as 2002 Dodge Truck Division was talking about continued development of the 5.7 Hemi to higher outputs, including increasing the displacement, so it wouldn't surprise me that a 6.1 in a RAM is not too far off.
DO ANY BODY KNOW WHY THE NEW 5.7 HEMI SOUNDS LIKE A DIESEL. I OWN A 5.7 HEMI. THE NOISE DO SOUND LIKE A DIESEL. IT ALSO SOUNDS LIKE A INJECTOR OR LIFTER TAPPING.I DON'T LIKE IT AT ALL, THE SPEED IS GREAT. BUT I DIDN'T KNOW I WAS BUYING A CUMMINGS DIESEL.
The 5.7 doesn't sound like a diesel (at least not mine). It does have a very throaty V-8 "rumble" but not that "puckita-puckita".....(wish it did....I really WANTED a diesel but so far the Hemi seems like one heck of a motor)...
I JUST BOUGHT A 2004 1500 QUAD 4X4 SLT WITH HEMI AND 20" WHEELS.I HAVE 1100 HUNDRED MILES AT THIS TIME. SHARP LOOKING TRUCK, SOUNDS LIKE SH-T. THE NOISE YOU'RE HEARING, I ALSO HAVE. I ALSO HEAR A NOISE THAT SOUNDS LIKE TIC TIC TIC. ALMOST LIKE AND INJECTOR TICKING NOISE. THE NOISE ECHO'S OFF STRUCTURES THAT I PASS WHEN DRIVING,IT SUCKS.I HAVE TALK TO THE SERVICE MANAGER,HE HAS INQUIRER ABOUT THIS COMPLAINT TO THE DODGE TECH BOARD.WAITING RESPONSE .THE NOISE IS KIND OF NORMAL, BUT MY IS LOUDER THAN THE OTHER DODGES WE CHECKED OUT. THE NOISE MAY BE COMING FROM THE WEIRD EXHAUST SYSTEM THEY HAVE. MAYBE A TURBO FLOW EXHAUST SYSTEM MAY HELP. WAITING TECH INFO. NO FIX, GOOD BUY TICKING, SWISH, SWISH DODGE HEMI.ANY BODY ELSE OUT THERE ?

Being heavier the 20 inch wheel increases the torque load and represents a power loss. This power loss would be more significant during acceleration.
The other disadvantage would be the price and selection of the tires.
Best regards,
Dusty

Okay, well five pounds isn't a big difference, I agree. I just would've thought they'd be a bit heavier.
Yeah, I know what you mean about hernia. When I rotate those 17 inchers on the Dakota I'm close to passing out. Of course at my age....
