01 Suburban transmission

I have an 01 suburban that wont shift to any gear automatically and when i shift manually it will only go to 2nd, 3rd and reverse. Fluid is good with no leaks. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

    So when you start in Drive, it stays in 1st gear? So you have to move the gearshift lever to get it to go into 2, 3 etc. And you have no top gear at all?

    No it starts in 3rd and i can shift between 2nd and 3rd. 1st and overdrive are gone.

    Here's what one diagnostic chart says about your condition:

    "ShiftA solenoid failed-- Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans or PCM itself. Needs diagnostic testing.

    Soooo, you might try to find a scanner that can read TCM codes and that may lead you to a solution.

    got in the suburban today to show my dad how it was running and transmission is shifting fine. whats the deal?

    How can my transmission be missing gears and not shift automatically and working perfectly today? Any thoughts?
