My 4 Runner knocks when I start it.

Just bought a 4 runner off a guy who had no time or energy to fix it.

Loud knocking when I start my truck. Smoke coming out of the exhaust.
I have my old 4 runner and I was just going to replace engine's.
I am thinking there might be an easier solution.
Any ideas?

    Well you'd have to locate the source of the knock. I suppose if you were lucky it could be a loose crank pulley but with all that smoke, it sounds more serious. Sometimes a mechanic's stethoscope works pretty well. First thing to determine is the location--if it's upper engine or lower. If it's lower engine then you pull the pan and start investigating. If it's upper engine, you pull the valve cover or covers and go from there.
