Will not shift into Drive

I have a 2005 Kia Sportage V6 AWD LX that will shift from Park to Reverse no problem, but does not want to shift into Drive, you can get into Neutrel if you apply enough pressure to the shift knob. Problem just started all of a sudden, I suspect possible cable issue or some kind of control switch. Any help will be greatly welcomed, Thank you much for your thoughts on this issue

Yes it does sound like some kind of linkage or perhaps internal detent issue. Certainly worth a trip on the lift before tearing into the console.
