I am not sure if this is the same problem, but it sounds similar. When pulling out from a stop I am getting a vibration in the driveline somewhere from 0-25 mph and it usually occurs right around the shift point from 1st to 2nd. From reading other forums I have narrowed it down to the carrige bearing. Apparently if it is off center in the very lest it will cause a vibration when you pull out and slow down between those speeds. I have to go in for an inspection and while it is up on the lift I am going to check it out. If it isn't that it must be the balance of the driveshaft. We have ruled out tires and balancing of them. I just put new ones on and it does the same thing. Actually, the OEM tires it was a little worse. They have been balanced with the road force balancer so I am 99.9% sure it is not the tires. I'll find out tonight.

I changed my oil today (1-10-06) and found something a little odd. First off I had approximently 3,600 miles on this oil and filter (Quaker State 5W-20 and toyota factory filter). When I removed the oil filler cap, I found a brownish foamy substance inside the filler tube and on the inside of the cap.
I change my oil type to Mobil 1, 5W-20 synthetic , with a fram double guard oil filter.
Is there a problem with my truck or just the old oil? Any Help would be greatly appreciated

So I finally got around to installing the PIE connector for my Taco, I didn't bother installing the Aux switcher that I bought to go with it. The idea was to run both my XM Radio & iPod through the Aux switcher into the stereo via the PIE adapter.

The problem is that there is no volume once it's installed. The level at "30" on the stereo was equivalent to maybe "12" under normal listeneing. I had to crank the head to 48 to get the output of the PIE to a level equal what was normally around 32. At that much gain, all the electronic nose (hiss on the line, the hard drive of the iPod spooling) became annoyingly present.

I pulled the PIE out and reboxed it. It will be going on ebay tomorrow along with the Aux switcher.

I'm totally bummed. All that work for a solution that sucks; what I don't get is that so many people on here had good things to say about it. The quality from my XM simply using an FM station is way clearer & louder than hooking directly into the head via the PIE!?!? ...I just don't get it.

The worst part is that when I pulled the head out, it scratched the plastic below the control console on my dash; a lasting reminder of what a bad idea this turned out to be. :(

On the plus side, it did motivate me to finally route my XM antenna through the 3rd brake light. Not as easy as one might think, but totally clean; now the antenna is invisible inside the truck, and there is only about 1.5" of wire between the light and the actual antenna on the roof. :)

I also just rolled my TRD Sport DC past the 15,000 mile mark. I had the 15k service done at the dealer yesterday. I haven't had any problems, or noises with my truck yet. I've regularly drive the thing through some pretty brutal desert 2-track stuff, often loaded down with dirtbikes and gear and still haven't managed to shake anything loose.

    I love this truck!!! :)

I have Fold A cover on my 2005 Access cab's long bed and looks and works great. Installed by myself and it's water tight from all sides and top. For best pics go to FOLDACOVER.COM. They make two sizes for the Tacoma: long and short. Go to that web site. Let us kknow how you make out.

I had Toyota install their running boards at the port assembly plant in California for my wife's stepping convenience. But found them a perfect solution to keep road gravel, snow, ice and tar from splashing the rocker panels amd lower door areas. What mud flaps do for the fenders, running boards will do for the rocker panels and the lower part of your doors. Highly recommended in my opinion.

I certainly would not rule out the tires even if they have been balanced. I put new tires on my 96 Tacoma and my 02 Tundra (Bridgestone APTs from Sears both times). Both vehicles shook even after repeated balances. I went back and got a different tire (AT instead of APT) and the vibes stopped. However, I don't think the tires nor the drive shaft will cause a vibe at 0-25 MPH. Generally you need to be up around 45+ to feel it. I weould guess that it is something in the tranny that causes the vibe.

Well, finally there's someone out there experiencing this same problem. I'm still chin rubbing between too soft of carrier bearing support material, possible transmission valving problem, or as you mentioned, possible misalignment when they mounted the carrier bearing to the frame. I will have to look for any sign that it has shifted or if it can be moved from side to side. This problem is driving me crazy as there is a section of the morning commute that is very slow stop and go. This puts me continually in the 1 / 2 shift pattern with light throttle. The dealer test drove around the block and said it shifted normal and it was no different than the rest. One of the Techs from Toyota said there may be a "Revision" (Toyota talk for recall) if enough people are complaining about this. This tells me they know more than they're telling. This tech would not elaborate on the problem! I think these trucks are good otherwise.
    Thanks for replying

I really like this truck, but in stop and go traffic it really starts to get on my nerves. I took it to a shop for state inspection yesterday and while they had it on the lift, I had them check things out. After test driving the truck he did notice the vibration I was speaking of. We looked at the carrier bearing and it seems to be alligned pretty close to center. It might be off by a very small amount, but the tech said it wouldn't make much difference to change it. He did mention that the drive shaft itself might be out of balance. This is the only thing about this truck that I don't like. The driveline just does not feel as smooth as it should be. I fogot to mention on my earlier post that the vibration goes away if you are in 4 wheel drive. I tested this several times in a row. Not sure how that is going to help us solve this problem. Please keep me informed of any new info you might have. Thanks!

Thanks. If I decide to keep the truck I'll get it in for a look-see. After a few of the posts here I experimented a bit more. If I put pressure on the shifter it will not pop into first until I get to around 2-3mph. The owner's manual indicates that I should be able to downshift at a higher speed. My experience with manual transmissions tells me the same.

    Hey guys,
Sounds like I may be having the same problem as you. What really gets me is the rough downshift (5 sp. auto.) Something I've noticed with the vibration, did you try taking it out of overdrive and into 4? I noticed the shake at around 31-32 mph is gone when not in overdrive. Thoughts??Keep us posted on what you find out...
    Thanks

There's one more possible cause for this 1 / 2 shift shutter that I forgot to mention in my previous posting. These trucks use a splined slip joint on both drive shafts. They allow the diveline to adjust for wheelbase length contraction while stopping and conversely lengthening on take off. From my experience with other trucks of earlier vintage (90 Chev 2 wheel drive extended cab P U), these slip joints can hang up or bind from lack of lubrication or if the wrong lubrication is used! These slip yokes can hang-up so bad that when you take off there's a big clunk and you'd swear that the two front calipers are hanging up then abruptly releasing. Vibrations can travel on a driveline sometimes making it hard to pinpoint.
I've also done some reading on a phenomenon known as axle roll which can be a cause for driveline vibration.
I've asked Toyota to look at the slip spline on the main driveshaft when I first brought it to their attention. They said they checked it but I think this was just lip service. Just this evening on the way home from work I went around a vehicle at the bottom of a steep hill. I purposely eased into the 1 / 2 shift and this shutter was even more pronounced.
I Know one thing, I will drive them crazy until they address this problem and correct it!
  • soundman34soundman34 Member Posts: 36
I brought up the slip yoke assembly theory to the dealer sometime last year and all I got was lip service as well. At any outside ambient temperature above 45 degrees I feel a clunk or grab when pulling out and after coming to a stop. I got the "it's normal for these trucks" speach from the dealer. My previous truck was a 2000 ford ranger and this problem feels exactly like the problem I had with the ranger. After several trips to the dealer, it was the slip yoke assembly not being greased proberly. After they fixed that, the driveline was smooth as silk. I know the driveline on our tacoma's are differnt, but something just doesn't feel right. The dealer won't even consider taking the driveshaft assembly apart to see if it is a lubrication issue. It is really hard to get these dealers to listen.

after all this waiting, i finally got my Eclipse navigation in. Works great (much better than the Pioneer flush mount), navigation is right on, and everything else about it is awesome.

Here's my cardomain page so you can see pictures, i'll probably screw up the picture thing on here: Car Domain
let me know how you like it!
  • soundman34soundman34 Member Posts: 36
Very Nice! I have been wanting to put one of them in my tacoma for a while now. What was the cost of the unit if you don't ming me asking? With the eclipse you should be able to use the steering wheel audio controls right? Very nice install!
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
Looks nice! I'm wanting to do the same thing, but with a AVN5495. Is there an outboard antenna to run for the GPS or is it all built in?
  • cwhileycwhiley Member Posts: 4
I've got a 2005 Tacoma V6 4x4 Auto TRD Sport truck with 8300+ miles on
it. I just bought it last week.

When I get on the highway and start to approach 80 mph I get a high
pitched whistle droning vibration noise coming from what seems to be
the windshield area right in front of me. It gets more consistent as I
hit 80 and above. I thought it might be just wind passing thru the
wipers or something so I ran the wipers and it had no effect.

    Anyone experienced this?
  • d33ad33a Member Posts: 1
Same exact thing happens to me. The noise seems to be coming from underneath the hood leaking out from the vents where the wipers are.
  • tacomafuntacomafun Member Posts: 9
Thanks! The unit cost $1700 and the dash kit from Scosche was $49.. and yes, the steering wheel controls work with it. Because Eclipse (Fujitsu Ten) is the company Lexus/Toyota uses for its navigation systems, basically it is just an aftermarket version of that.
There is an outboard antenna (mine is near my rear view mirror). I would suggest the 5495 if you have the extra money... The extra hard drive space is well worth it.
  • cwhileycwhiley Member Posts: 4
Have you taken it to the dealer? Mine's extended cab (access cab) by the way. I forgot to mention that. I suppose it might be related to the fake hood scoop that came with the sport package. Does yours have that scoop?

I haven't taken mine to the dealer yet but I will soon I think. It's rather annoying.
  • bill55bill55 Member Posts: 25
Does it have an optional skid plate, there have been problems with a vibration from it.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
Looks great! How was the install? Doable for the average person who can follow directions and do simple wiring (like lights and such) or does this take more advanced skill?
  • pheonix2pheonix2 Member Posts: 12
I think they're going to have to start listening if enough people start to complain. There's no doubt in my mind that if the warranty was off and I just threw my Visa card on the counter and said fix it, they would know what to do in a flash. This problem spoils an otherwise enjoyable first experience with a Toyota product!
The driveline slip yokes probably get the highest points for being the culprit of this driveline shutter. Its as good a spot as any to start.
As time permits, I will be persistent in getting them to replace the whole damn drive shaft, carrier bearing and slip yoke inclusive. Barring that, I will stand right there while they pull the slip yokes apart. I will insist on inspecting them before they repack them with the proper grease.
These are relatively expensive (41K in Canada) new vehicles and this kind of problem should not be happening.
  • cwhileycwhiley Member Posts: 4
I think it does have a skid plate. It's not the aluminum silver colored one I've seen on a lot of em but there's definetly a metal plate underneath the front bumper that extends back about a foot and a half, maybe 2 feet square.

I don't think the sound is coming from that far away though. It seems to be right up on the hood/windshield area. When the other dude mentioned the vents by the wipers that sounds EXACTLY right.

Oh and the sound, I thought of a good way to describe it. I'm sure we've all hit the wake up strips on the side of the highway before. Well it's like that only if the strips had ridges that were much smaller (shallower) and closer together. Very much a whirring, buzz, whitstle too in there.
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
On Ebay I've seen the 5435 for $1300 and the 5495 for $1950 new.
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
Do a search. There is a kit that the dealer has that fixes the noise.I think it is a different trim piece on the sides of the windshield.
  • coldfootcoldfoot Member Posts: 49
Does anyone know where you can get heated mirrors and seats for 05 Tacoma ? Thanks
  • tacomafuntacomafun Member Posts: 9
The install wasn't bad at all. Especially because it has the plug right in the back. The only thing i didn't do, and my cousin helped me, is running the wiring for it. I didn't even look at any of that since that really isn't my thing haha. He didn't seem to have too much trouble with it though and he is just above average as far as this stuff goes.

And for the prices, i noticed on Ebay the low prices they had. I didn't pay full price for the unit (1700) because i also purchased three remote starters from the same store and they gave me a deal. I ended up paying around 1550. I'd much rather do that than buy an expensive unit like that over Ebay--if anything goes wrong with it, it's much more a pain.

I've searched over this forum for "Tacoma wind noise" and I did see a lot of posts about it. Primarily related to the windshield seals and such that could leak either water or air. I didn't see anything about a specific trim kit that the dealers had to fix this problem.

I called the local dealership and they said they had heard of the problem and could reseat the windshield to fix it. They were nott aware of any specific Toyota trim parts kit that was put out to address the problem.

Does anyone know where I can get toggle switches to use in my dash? I want to add back-up lights and I want to use a toggle switch, but one exactly like what's already in the dash.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

what did you mean by adding spacers or bending the pedals?

i have tried several positions including using an additional back support but it just doesn't work for me. i have a back problem that is why and i would be constantly twitching to find the good position but to no avail.

is there a way to change the driver's seat with a seat from another vehicle that can provide me with a more commanding view or a position wherein my feet are positioned under my knees and not forward.

i find the seat too low, it is unfortunate that this vechicle did not have an option to lower or higher the seat position

You can order another foglight switch from the dealer for a crazy $40, or you could do this:

I have a 2006 Tacoma. Only problem so far is the switch for the recirculation option (next to the AC) It works about 1/2 the time in which I can't get the small orange light to come on. Any one know how to approach this problem?
    Thanks in advance

coming from a sports car perspective. racers adjust first, for a comfortable grip position on the wheel for the best control. wherever that leaves your feet can be compensated for at the pedal by bending it away or adding blocks.

if your back problem finds a comfortable position uncomfortable a short time later.... you're on your own...

I have an 05 long bed 4 door sport with 3000 miles. Since it was new there has been a wind noise around the windshield at highway speeds. Not the "buzzing or whistling" noise people are talking about but a wooshing noise. Well I take it to the dealer and they say it is the BUGSHIELD!!! I was mad. It is obviously the seal around the windshield and I told them that to begin with. Well I have the bugshield off and still the same noise so gonna take it back. Next they are going to tell me "that's the way Toyotas are"
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
You have a different sound, but the solution is the same as the other windshield noises. The dealerships have certainly dealt with this problem for a year now. Most dealerships know about the problem and usually fix it without giving you the run around. Talk to the main manager.

Same truck mine was built in May of 2005. I don't have any of these problems you or anyone else speaks of. No driveline shutter, no wind noises, no noise in the back where the leaf springs are. Had a vibration in the front, bought new tires and it is all gone. Sorry there seems to be all these problems with your Taco's. Mine is a 2005 Tacoma Double Cab Long Bed TRD Sport 4x4 with 12,000 miles on it.

I know I have asked this question previously. And I have done a search and found nothing. Does anyone have the Swayaway 2.0 Series of coilover on there 2005 or 2006 Tacoma 4x4? I have seen posts and talk about this before on here. My real question is, can you use the the O.E.M. rims that come on the vehicle. Whether it is the TRD Sport 17 inch rims or the TRD Off Road 16 inch rims. Please help.
  • raswankraswank Member Posts: 56
Okay I bought the coilovers for my Taco. Right now I have the 16 inch Y spoke wheels on it that come with the TRD Off Road with 265/75 R16 B.F.Goodrich All Terrains on them. When I finally get the whole truck done, it will probably have the Donahoe rear leafs in it. So 3 inches front to back of lift. Would you use the 16 inch wheels with 285/75 R16 tires? Or the 17 inch wheels with whatever the equivalent tires is?

Hi, i have also noticed that noise. Ive put on about 6k miles now and its still there, and imo is very slowly getting a little worse. My local dealer dismissed it under "the mud flaps or shields vibrating" which made me wander about their quality of service. it does sound like rear end to me because you would hear it distinctly from under you, as there is not much other than the soft boot that covers tranny where the shifter comes out. im 90% sure it is the rear end....

what happened to your taco after rear end change?

Someone on another forum bought this one, here is their post.

"If your looking for a TOOL BOX for the bed of your truck.

    I just bought a UWS tbs-63-a-lp black.

Go to unitedweldingservices.com go to the BLUE SERIES, then LOW PROFILE.

I fits great and anchored it with "J" hooks into the side rails for the "CLEATS"

I want to get a set of the Toyota-brand rubber floormats for my '05 Access cab. However I don't really need the rear mats. The 2-piece set for the standard cab can be had for a little more than half the cost of the 4-piece set that Toyota specs for the Access-cab. Does anyone know whether the standard cab 2-piece set fits the front of the Access cab model?

    Yes they will.

I got two sets of these as gifts for my bday lol, but the dealership won't take them back because it's passed the 7 day refund policy. Anyone interested in them?
