flip up the rear seat on your doublecab and look in the storage compartment. this is where i found my tie down cleats.

funny that you got that truck in the GST region. i tried to order that exact spec in white in Texas. got nothing but lies when i checked on the status of the vehicle. said none were coming in with the curtain airbags.

    where'd you get yours?

My relative ordered it in California for me. I'm surprised that I could order the airbag option and get it within 2 months. Interestingly, I originally wanted the Speedway blue but it was rejected because of the SR5 #8 option. I really wanted the limited slip differential, not locking so I had to settle for the Indigo Ink Pearl - very odd. It's like they can't paint that color on the truck if it had limited slip diff.

Another thing. My door sill protector is a plastic piece that covers both the top and the side of the painted bottom, not just a piece of tape that covers the top part only. That's why I was glad to pay the $115 for the option rather than the $80 quoted by Toyota, which only mentions carpet.

I hate GST's monopoly. They kind of dictate what you can drive in TX.

Thanks guys for replying about the warranty. I am sure mine had a $0 deductable. I am still within 30 days of the original purchase so I can cancel and get that money back...thats why I wanted to know what people paid.

It looks like I got ripped off. Consider though, that I am in the Seattle area and prices might be more here? I am going to call Extra Care myself to confirm that it can be canceled and purchased again later.

The dealer told me that they charge even more as in $400-600 more for someone buying a completely new vehicle(probably a lie) and how my price was so good....haha. Well they are about to lose their profit on it!

Good for you! I just canceled mine today. And will buy it again for much less (and probably extend it to 7 years/100K miles, still for less than I paid originally for 6/75).
  • leob1leob1 Member Posts: 153
    Boo and everyone,

Thanks, you helped me save approx $600 by giving me that info on the warranty. Dealers rip people off on those things and thankfully we CAN get our money back. I am going straight to the dealer and am going to take care of it.

FYI, anyone else in the same situation...call Toyota Extra Care 800-228-8559 and they will guide you through how to write the cancellation and give you a fax number.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
Good! Glad you all were able to cancel. You can actually cancel after that but they prorate it. Within the 30 days is a full refund so again good question! Glad it was posted and it saved a few people hundreds of $$
  • palominopalomino Member Posts: 21
yes. Gulf States Toyota sucks. it must be comparable to negotiating with the NHL...take it or leave it. i left it and i couldn't be more glad to give my money to another region of the country and get exactly what i wanted.

side curtain airbags were my must-have option. with the Mad Max drivers around here in the DFW area i want all the protection i can get. apparently GST doesn't value my life or my family's as much as i do. i'm not surprised.
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
Yep. Warranties if not researched, and bought at the dealer, are a rip off. When I told them no, and no again in finance, she said she had to go get something, and what she was really doing, was getting one of the sales managers or something, to come in and ask me again.

It's a big profit for them if they can get you to buy it. They go back to the "monthly payment" because it looks cheaper than telling you up front how much it's going to cost. They wanted to add $4200 to my loan to give me the warranty, lowjack, and all that other crap, and I said, heck no. That comes out to $5221 when added to an auto loan at 4.45%! You've got to be kidding me, right? Like I wouldn't figure out how much $70 added to my monthly would come out to?

Heck, if the flippin' engine blew up in it, I could buy a brand new one for cheaper than that! What about the transmission? It's not worth it. Personally, if someone steals my truck, I don't want the police to find it, because most likely, they have torn the thing up while doing so.

They even try and sell you gap insurance, which if your putting 9K down like I did, is pointless, but they don't tell you that. Before I really understood how it worked, we did the same thing on my wife's car, and paid for it, even though we put a substantial amount down on the car.

I hate buying new cars. You have to fight for everything, and they act like your taking food off their table. Personally, it almost turns me off to new car buying enough, to just always buy second hand.

Guess that's enough of my rant.

I purchased my 2005 Tacoma xcab 4x4 with aotomatic on 12/10/04. Three hours later the heater broke. As of this posting 02/18/05 Toyota has yet to repair this. They say there is no such part # for the part that is broken. The dealer has had my vehicle for 1 month and are renting me a 2005 F-150. Isnt that ironic. Parts have been sent twice to the dealer but was wrong part. Has anyone else had this problem?
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
Wow. I'd be calling Toyota direct on that, and complaining about it. There is no excuse for that.

Tell the dealer you want a new truck. Drive up there in your F-150 and gripe them out everyday about your brand new truck, and that they have had it for more than a month. Do all this while out in the open showroom, and I bet something will get done quick.

Talk to your salesperson about it and ask them what they are doing about it.
  • jsandjsand Member Posts: 19
Amen brother! I went through the same stuff when I bought my new taco. I kept saying no and they kept asking. They finally gave up on me. I plan to buy the extended warrenty before my 36/30K runs out. Way to hang in there.
  • palominopalomino Member Posts: 21
warranties from the dealer are crap.

i thought mine would be fully refunded after i sold my car this week. WRONG. the crooks told me that the extended warranty that i bought was concurrent with the factory. so they stole $500 from me. none of this was explained to me during the purchase.

read the fine print. don't be rushed. and don't give the crooks a dime but for the vehicle itself. everything else can be bought later (and usually much cheaper) as you now know.
  • ush00zush00z Member Posts: 30
Went thru the whole thing with the finance guy last night too. I politely let him explain all the warranties on one of the 3 columns on the paper. When he paused and asked me if I'm interested in anything, I said nope. I didn't finance with the dealer so I felt I had no string with them and he felt that I just wanted to sign a check and get out of there. He thanked me for letting him explain all the warranties (probably sarcastic). Then someone paged him (thank god), so he let me go.

The warranties are pure dealer's profit, and the true sales guy in there is the finance guy.

I have been comparing ordering assessories from the following places:
    http://www.toyotapart.com/
    and
    http://www.trdparts4u.com/

TRD parts has been cheaper on every quote that I have gotten so far. But they are in Texas and Toyota parts is in Michigan (closer to me) so likely after all the shipping it will work out to be the same.
  • leob1leob1 Member Posts: 153
I went to the dealer, got the $1800 back and it is going straight to the principal. Now check this out and I hope it helps someone else...

Another issue was that I bought my 2005 used with 740 miles on it. The Salesman had explained to me it was a Toyota Certified Used Car, so no worries with the mechanics, etc. After looking into that later, it was NEVER documented as Certified and that had previously been explained to be included in the price(although not written). Can you believe that?! They had some smart comebacks to that dilemma later and that set me back, because I believed them.

When I cancelled the Platinum warranty, I explained to them my issue with the Certified Used. All of a sudden they are going to certify it, with the cancellation of the Platinum(after I show them the sticker of course..just can't take my word for it)! They better Certify the truck, considering I have the window sticker with the VIN saying it was "Certified." That will further drop the price for a future extended warranty. The Toyota Certified Platinum will be around $900. So I really saved $900!

    Thanks for your help!

I have a Tacoma 05 and just researched octane ratings and meanings. I am a certified Aircraft mechanic and am meticulous about mechanical items.
Check your gas station pumps and you will see R+M/2. Basically, The R is the characteristics of the fuel in a single piston engine at low RPM. The M is the same but at high RPM. It gets complicated to breifly explain so here is the bottom line. If you use higher octane gas, the burn rate is slower and it can be compressed more before detonation by compression. This is important in higher compression engines like the newer 05 Tacoma. So octane is basically how fast it burns or explodes and how much compression it can take before it explodes. The 05 Tacoma manual says to fuel with 91 or higher octane and I suggest you do that. The small expense is worth the lower mechanical stresses.
Another thing: I had the privelage of talking with an inspector that tests everyone's gas! Note that all the gas for all different stations comes from the SAME 3 PIPES!!! It is the same gasoline! Do not be fooled, they are all tested and fall in the same characteristics.
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
Yeah, I agree. The true sales pitch comes in during the finance part of the deal. Even if you have your own financing (like I did), they still try and sell you $5 worth of crap for 1000 times as much. Granted, you are paying for some things like the Lowjack and the $20 it costs for them to etch the VIN into your windows, but I bet at least 80% of that is profit.

That's what I can't stand about buying a new car. They try and get you with the price of the car, then the financing, then the warranties/extras.

It's hard to go in there, because you feel bad for not buying into it, and they make you think you are really turning something down. But, when it's all said and done, you're better off getting the warranty later. I stopped feeling bad for anyone in a car dealership when I bought my first semi-new (used) car from a dealer, and after the deal, I felt ripped off. After that day, I decided, that I won't let that happen again. They know people need cars, and people will buy them, that's why they can get away with doing this to people.

You just have to be smarter than them (which, not to be mean, but usually it doesn't take much), and do your homework on what you are buying. Bring a calculator, folder with all your calculations with every possible option (in case you change your mind while there, or you can't get exactly what you want, you'll still know the invoice for each option). It also doesn't hurt to get a couple of auto quotes from your bank and credit union. My CU ended up being more than 1/2% lower than what the dealer was going to offer me, and I have a very good credit score.

You have to be firm with them, and if they won't come down, keep telling you you're taking food off their table, get up and leave. Oh, and yeah, that's another thing. Never give them your driver's license for copying, take a copy with you, never let them "look over your used trade-in" while making the deal on the truck. Don't give them a credit card for deposit, or a check, until you've made the deal. If you give them any of these, I certainly bet that they will hold onto it longer than you like, which may keep you from leaving. The crap about them wanting to "get a deposit to let him know you are serious" is BS. I wouldn't be in here making a deal with you if I wasn't serious! Man. This get's me worked up every time...

I'm glad you guys were able to cancel your warranties. Seems strange they would scam you like that, then give you an out. You guys should consider yourselves lucky! =)

    That's all for now. 10-4

"Another thing: I had the privelage of talking with an inspector that tests everyone's gas! Note that all the gas for all different stations comes from the SAME 3 PIPES!!! It is the same gasoline! Do not be fooled, they are all tested and fall in the same characteristics."

Could you rephrase that? It sounds like you are saying that gas from different gas stations all come from the same place, but I'm not sure, because beforehand, you were talking about octane.

Also, when you hear an engine knocking, this can be because you are not using a high enough octane in an engine that requires it.

Like miketacoma said, it can withstand higher compression, which if you are using a lower octane gas, the engine expects that it can compress the gas so much, before it explodes, and if it was designed for higher octane, then the explosion can come before it's meant to, and that's why you get knocking, because a piston may be slightly out of tune with the cam shaft, or the like.

I have heard of engines adjusting themselves to this knocking (to prevent it) which in this case, the only bad thing is performance and lower gas mileage.

I have a 2005 Taco Access Cab V-6 auto with a TRD package. It has 300 miles. There is a noticeable vibration in the steering wheel when accelerating at about 2000 rpm's. It stops when you let off the accelerator. I asked the dealer and had the alignment checked and was told that the new Taco's have a bit of vibration in the steering but there is nothing wrong with the vehicle. It is not the tires. It doesn't seem to be the skidplate vibration mentioned by others. Any similar experiences? Otherwise, I really like the truck.
  • engineerbooengineerboo Member Posts: 45
Diegotralfaz: No, that vibration is not normal. I have the same vehicle and have never had that. (I do hear a wierd "boing" noise when first starting but somebody said that's the ABS system kicking on.)

I'd definately get it to the service department....shaking can just mean it needs an alignment or rebalancing on the wheels. (Minor stuff but will damage the wheels if not corrected.)

    Good Luck!

    Boo
  • leob1leob1 Member Posts: 153
Yeah, I am totally turned off from buying new again. I had a similar experience before this one and it seems to repeat itself. The best deal would probably be from a private owner who has the transferable Platinum warranty on his/her truck and receipts for maintenance.

In regards to the OCTANE discussion...I just bought 'Outlaw' octane booster that had 4 indiv cans, one for each tank for $9.99. My calculations indicate it would save approx $3.80 per tank vs super unlead. I am going to keep shopping though for better deals on the booster.

Also, practically every vechicle I've ever had pinged on reg unleaded. Even those designed to run on it. Some manufacturers claim pinging to be normal, Ford is an example. Every vehcile always ran better on super as well.

Is anyone else experinced that the new taco seem to drift or actually follow the road tracks, etc. Seem like I'm driving with old bias tires and I'm in a real bad need of a steering stabilizer. I have a 05 PreRunner Double Cab with the TRD and pretty much every option. Only has about 600 miles on it.. I love the truck, the way it rides and everything else.. Just seems to track..
  • palominopalomino Member Posts: 21
    i could be wrong...

but, if your truck is Certified Used shouldn't it come with an extended warranty as part of the deal?

most Certified Used that i have seen from car companies extend the warranty as part of the deal. so you could've been paying $1800 for nothing. i'm very glad that you got it back.

reference note 2 on the following link http://www.toyotacertified.com/usedinvsearch.psp . says 6yr/100,000mile powertrain warranty for Certified Used among other things. get all of those things from your dealer and report them to http://www.bbb.org/ if necessary. these guys really tried to swindle you.

    show them how you feel

Palamino and Engineerboo -- Thanks for the info on the tube steps. One question for anyone with this accessory. Are they actually useful for getting into / out of the truck? Or would they be for someone small? Or do they actually hinder entrance? It almost seems like they could make it more difficult to get into the truck if you had to work around them. And thanks to whoever posted the link to TRDparts -- good prices.

Someone asked about posting photos on here. You have to have the photo on the web somewhere, such as your personal web space or a commercial service that allows photo posting (I believe msn and yahoo and so forth have such free services). Then you can use an html image tag and the address of the photo to insert the photo into your post. The FAQ, accessible in "forums help" on the menu to the left of this page shows the tag.
  • palominopalomino Member Posts: 21
i've found the tube steps are more for looks and lower body protection from paint damage. i will admit they aren't of much use for getting in and out of the truck. they would be useful for washing the top of the truck or for accessing a roof rack.

they look pretty good and will protect your vehicle. as far as their value...that's debatable. i could live without them. but, i'll likely keep them on.

here's the link to mine since my pic posts just won't cooperate

I'm 5'10" and don't really need the tube steps to get in and out. But I had knee surgery a year ago so the little extra lift does help the bad knee.

My wife is 5'1" and loves the steps and definately uses them and that great handgrip on the door jam.

You say you get the vibration at about 2000 rpm's, is this in every gear or just in first? If it is in every gear at 2000rpm it is not a wheel/tire problem, more likely a drive shaft out of balance or even the transmission. Regardless it needs to be checked out! stay on top of your dealer and let us know the outcome.

has anyone looked at where their new taco was built? after reading these posting the build date doesnt seem to account for all of the recurrent issues.

This used to be a big deal with vw's - german made (better) or usa. toyo is beefing up their production in tijuana but i dont remember if it is taco
  • arcpassarcpass Member Posts: 53
Yes, It's the Tacoma being made in Tijuana. They supposedly plan on building 30,000 Tacoma's per year. That is also where all the new composite beds are made. I know a lot of the problems talked about on this forum are on Tacomas made prior to Tijuana's ramp-up, but I wonder if the problems will continue on Tijuana built Tacoma's.
  • leob1leob1 Member Posts: 153
Thanks for your input, the Certified Used comes with the 6yr/100k limited warranty. The extended Certified Platinum is different. The dealer claims that a Certified Used will drop the price of the Certified Platinum if I choose to purchase it. They said it would be smart to get it now, because the prices rise. I honestly cannot believe what they say anymore and have to double check everything. You guys know why.

I just remembered that the man in finance lied about the Platinum I just cancelled. He told me once it was cancelled, I could not get it back. I cannot understand how a business can be run on lying to the public. It really needs to stop.
  • hobohobo Member Posts: 27
    Palomino,
I got them because I thought I'd use them to get in. It turns out I rarely use them -- I just step over them as I normally would to get in (and I'm not tall). Even my wife says she doesn't use them. I guess we both were under the impression they would be more helpful.

But anyway, like you, I think they look nice, but I probably would not have bought them knowing that I wouldn't use them. We'll see if it helps with rocks, etc.
  • jsandjsand Member Posts: 19
I just passed 2K on my 05 Taco and have no vibration at all. I'd get a second opinion.
  • philg87philg87 Member Posts: 74
Well I test drove a DC V6 Auto 4x4 red taco i was very impress with the ride. They had just pulled it off the truck will go back when they can tighten the licenses plate bracket and keep the floor mats from sliding around and the dealer plate so i can focus on any noises that i shouldn't hear.
  • hueyhuey Member Posts: 13
To all those that changed the oil on their own, how many quarts of oil did you actually put in for the V6? The owner's manual says 5.5qt(with filter) and 5.2(w/o filter). Lastly, can you still use the PureOne filter on fully synthetic oil?

I am in the process of purchasing a new truck also...

Where are you guys purchasing your exten warrantee's??? I went on-line and the only one that came up was Warrantee Center with T Bradshaws picture on it 84/100,000 0 deduct for $1750 (for silverado 2005 5.3 extend cab)

I Know this is not a Tacoma, but I bet you guys can answer my question...

    thanks, tom
  • tjotjo Member Posts: 7
I think "Thinking about buying an Tacoma" was asking about mileage and I replied that I was getting on highway "luggage and 2 people only" 20-21 mpg with a 5.3liter V-8 silverado with a 3.42 rear-end on a trip back east... This was also a 2WD truck.

I also stated that I was thinking about getting a 3.23 with my new purchase since I don't do much "heavy" trailer pulling (less then 5,000) for short distances (less then 100 miles round trip)

So: my question I got on e-mail from one of the "dealers" I am working with and after telling him I preffered a 3.23 for Increase "every day driver" MPG. Well he came back and stated "MPG between 3.23 and 3.73 is LESS then 1MPG"

I think this is TOTAL Bogus info

Again, I know this is a Tacoma site, but I know many of you and I too am thinking of changing to a Tacoma and also can answer my question..

    thanks, tom
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
I put in 5 quarts and it is within the normal range. However, it looks like it can hold another 1/2 quart which I will probably put in but wanted to see where 5 quarts would put me.
  • leob1leob1 Member Posts: 153
The dealer is the only place to purchase a Toyota extended warranty. You have to shop around though, because dealers tend to overcharge to make big profits and rob people. The good thing though, within 30 days you can get a full refund. After that it's prorated. Within 3yrs/36k you are still eligable to purchase one. Myself and at least one other person on this forum just cancelled our warranties to shop for better deals.

Check out Toyota's warranty prices at Toyota.com under Financial services. You will have to type in some information, submit, then click on VSA which will bring up prices. You can purchase the warranties for less than Toyota's prices apparently.
  • leob1leob1 Member Posts: 153
Okay guys I got a question,

Toyota.com lists the basic Certified extended warranty for $900 with $0 deductable. The Platinum Certified is $1250. What are the invoice prices?

    Thanks

I am debating whether to buy the 2005 Prerunner AccessCab V6 2WD with a 6 speed tranny on order. After reading all the problems everyone had with it, I don't know if I should cancel my order. Does anyone know if Toyota corrects these problems on the assembly line once they are aware of them? I hate to get a new truck costing over $20K only to have rain leak in the cab or unusual noise emanating from the engine, trans and under the body. What do you think guys/gals?
  • nickt1nickt1 Member Posts: 32
It takes time for these problems to be fixed on the assembly line, alot of time. First, Toyota has to be made aware of the problem, which requires communication between dealerships and Toyota. Then, Toyota has to acknowledge that there is indeed a problem. Finally Toyota has to search for a solution, find one, and subject it to testing before implementing changes on the assembly line. If the solution requires a new part, that's going to add to the time because Toyota has to subcontract out to a supplier to produce it. And for some problems, like the horrible paint on the 05's, well, it looks like Toyota is never going to acknowledge that there's a problem with the paint. I can't tell you whether to get a 2005 or wait. Not all trucks have problems and alot of people report perfect trucks, but if you get one of the trucks with problems, even multiple problems, you're going to wish you had waited. I do have one word of advice--if you live where it snows, INSIST that the dealer put running boards on the truck, for FREE, to prevent the paint from looking like its sandblasted. Make that the deal-breaker--tell the dealer that you're aware of the paint problem and you won't buy the truck unless it has running boards, and you're not going to spend a single dime for those boards. Maybe then the dealers will start communicating with Toyota and the dealers will use their influence to get Toyota to do something about the paint on these trucks.

mh808: I know, reading all the posts about problems with the Taco can be disheartening!

My 05 Tacoma (Access Cab/V-6/TRD Off Road Package #2) was built in mid-Dec in California and just went over 1,000 miles.

I have had zero problems with it....no water leaks, no strange noises, doors shut great, etc.

I would check the build date (located on driver's side door jam) to ensure it wasn't built before December.
  • chileheadchilehead Member Posts: 41
The dealer might be right if you are talking about a mix of highway and city. The only way to know with absolute certainty would be to check with other Silverado owners.

If you are thinking of a Tacoma, keep in mind you don't get to choose the rear-end on a Taco like you do with Chevy--it's strictly determined by the base model you choose. "Mix and Match" is not something Toyota does.

Heck, we don't even get a choice on air bags. Guess you gotta buy a Kia if you want to be protected!

I haven't really been shocked by the problems folks have had considering this is a first year model. I haven't experienced any of these problems however. I'm glad to see that there are no major problems (engine, drivetrain etc.) problems. My truck drives great, looks nice, is comfortable, and fuel consumption isn't bad. I don't think I could expect anymore from a truck. Accesories have been easy to find and affordable, and considering this is a new vehicle that's nice. I'm sure with a little time even more accesories will become available. My last two vehicles were old, Nissan Quest, Mazda Pick-up, so maybe my expectations aren't as high as "two year use" owners who have been driving new vehicles. I expect this vehicle will last me for a good while as the previous two did. I think Toyota did a great job in it's redesign and engineering of this vehicle. Nothing appears cheesy about this vehicle and even the structure and connections are quality, it looks as good underneath as it does on the exterior. I like Nissan's products, however it seems they have opted for a Juvenile appearance concerning their pick-up design. Considering the price of trucks these days, I think it's important to present a vehicle that performs at the work site and is presentable enough for Valet parking; I think the Tacoma achieves this. I like my 2005 Tacoma very much and think Toyota did a fine job of thinking this vehicle out before delivering it to the public.

I am seriously considering the new Tacoma and would like to know your experiences in using regular vs high octane gas. I have read mixed messages regarding the octane number that the V6 actually requires. Does 87 octane produce a knock?

I have a V6 Mazda in thich 91+ octane is recommended. However I notice little, if any, difference when I use 87 octane. There is no knocking either.

I purchased a 05 Tocoma and within a few hours I realized that the speedometer is off by 5 MPH. WHen the speedo reads 65, I am actually traveling at 60MPH. The odometer is also regestering 21 miles for every 20 actual miles traveled. When I called the dealer, they said that it was impossible. That was until I proved it to them. I am taking my truck in tomorrow to have the head unit changed. Has anyone else experienced this problem? You can test it by traveling at 60 MPH between mile posts. If your speedometer is correct it will take you 60 seconds to travel 1 mile.
