r979,I have an 05 tacoma like the one you are looking at.I have only filled up once and got 18.2 mpg on that first tank.I have had two full size and and two small trucks before this tacoma. For me anyway,I find the smaller trucks more fun to drive.I guess the size one needs is an individual concern. This dc,longbed, tacoma is as long as the access cab tundra I had a couple of years ago.

Anyone know if I can have some protective side molding put on my truck? I park in a parking lot at work and doors are flung open and ding truck! I realize it may not look great but I must protect the body!

                                   thanks

I've never seen an official Toyota publication that mentions "optimum fuel economy" in connection with its octane recommendations. Where did you get that quote? Here is what the general recommendations say (see footnote at bottom).

Our current model year vehicles have the following unleaded fuel octane rating recommendations:

    MODEL OCTANE

    4Runner 87*

    Avalon 87*

    Camry

        4 Cylinder

    87

        V6 87*

    Celica

        GT 87

        GT-S 91

    Corolla

        CE, LE, S 87

        XRS 91

    ECHO 87

    Highlander

        4 Cylinder 87

        V6 87*

    Land Cruiser 87*

    Matrix

        Standard/XR 87

        XRS 91

    MR2 Spyder 87

    Prius 87

    RAV4 87

    Sequoia 87*

    Sienna 87*

    Solara

        4 Cylinder 87

        V6 87*

    Tacoma

        4 Cylinder

    87

        V6 87*

    Tundra 87*

    * For improved vehicle performance, the use of premium unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended.

The truck has plenty of power, and is much more manuverable than a full size. If you dont need true full size carrying cap, then Taco fits the bill. The gas mileage is finicky. On highway, sometimes get 20-20.5 mpg. But when its really cold, or I'm using 4 hi for a distance, or towing a 1000lbs single covered snowmobile trailer, I've got as low as 13 mpg. Seems avg this winter is 16-17. I also run soft compound snow tires in winter, which seems to bring my mileage down, but I changed oil to synthenic, so might help. I run 89 gas, motor knocks on 87. I've got the Dcab 4x4 sport w/ 6spd. Good luck

    Thanks for the reply Tom.

You are blessed to be getting that kind of mileage on your truck. The fact that you have 2wd is a bonus in gas mileage as you know 4wd suffer more on mpg.

The rear end is 3.73 and I failed to mention that the engine is the 5.3 liter.

Everyone I know that has a Z71 with this engine and rear end gets pretty poor mileage. I guess that the way it is. I am thinking about synthetic oil to help with mpg.

Again thanks for the reply and good luck on whatever racing that you do.

    Thanks for the site leob1

It is making me think twice about a K+N air filter

Has any one had their first oil change done yet ? Has anyone heard if regular or synthetic oil is better ?
  • jsandjsand Member Posts: 19
I have a DC 4x2 v6 and the best I've gotten in is 18.5 mpg. I have 2K on it and I'm hoping it will improve. I love the truck otherwise.
  • jsandjsand Member Posts: 19
Try this site for the side moldings. I haven't called them yet. I've heard that Toyota doesn't offer them yet. Hopefully they will in the future.

Go to Toyota.com and under the Tacoma's accessories check out the Dee Zee tube steps. They aren't side molding, but do stick out from the side of the truck(might stop someone's door) and look tougher than the running boards.

On a doublecab the fronts are 6x9s and the rears are 6 1/2s. I'm taking on this same task this weekend except I'm also installing an amp. Don't know of anyone that has a navigation yet. I think most are still waiting for a dash kit to come out and the date keeps getting pushed back on them.

Walmart...$14 for one by Bell and it fit nicely after breaking it in.
  • leob1leob1 Member Posts: 153
The first oil change is coming up...Has anyone else researched available aftermarket filter alternatives for the 2005's? I found a NAPA Gold and a K&N thats it.

I just called my local dealer to inquire on buying the following assessories and the prices:
    Bed Mat ($83.99US)
    Running Boards ($291.98US)
    Roof Rack ($299.98US)
Fog lights (No Canadian kit available, to buy separately is $428.77US for both)
TRD Stickers ($143.03US for both or $60.80US for both OLD style)

I know of the www.toyotapart.com web site but only the Running Boards are on there. The roof rack is but says it is unavailable. Anyone out there order any of these parts, is it better to buy aftermarket or dealer ?
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
I'd e-mail Greg at toyotapart.com and ask him about it. He had some things I was looking for, but didn't have them on the site yet. It's a fairly new web site, so he doesn't have everything up there yet. You can get much better prices than what you have listed, at least for most of it.

Would you really pay $143 for TRD stickers? I'd almost peel them off mine if I could sell them for that much! =)

    [leob1]
Read that article about K&N posted a while back. Very interesting information in there, also has information about different brands of oil filters. It might give you some ideas to look for other brands of oil filters. (Oh, just realized that was you that posted the link...)

Sorry. Maybe by the second oil change, there will be more available.

Speaking of oil changes, when is everyone planning on getting their oil changed the first time, or when did you? I want to switch to Mobil 1 at some point, and will probably do it then. I'd like to get an aftermarket (better) filter though. I have these "coupons" that my dealer sold me when I bought the truck, but they want you to come in every 3,000 miles. While I guess it wouldn't hurt anything (except wasting oil), it just means I'll have to bring the truck in more often. I guess I could just wait until 5,000, then use the coupon for the 6,000 mile change. We've been doing 5,000 mile service intervals with my wife's TSX, of course using Mobil 1, and haven't had any problems yet.
  • jsandjsand Member Posts: 19
I plan on changing my oil every 5,000 miles so I can have the tires rotated to comply with the extended tire warranty.
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
Good point about every 5000 miles. I'll probably do the same.

The best oil filter, according to that web site was the PureONE filter by Purolator.

They list a model number as listed below.
    4 Cyl: PL10241

They list all these places as retailers that carry their filters (US).

hello everybody, changing your oil every 3000 miles here in vegas is a must due to the extreme heat and stop and go, but 5000 will do fine if not in other extreme weather climatesbut was woundering if anybody can tell for sure what type of gas to use because i have been noticing people have problems with 87 with the 4.0 v6 let me know, thanks bjw1
  • r979r979 Member Posts: 8
Thanks everyone for the response on my post.

I guess I will go back and test drive the truck again and make a evaluation. It would be great if the dealer would let me have it for overnight, but I would have a better chance of a naked playboy bunny walk into my office.

When these trucks cost as much as they do I don't want to have a case of buyers remorse.
  • dreasdaddreasdad Member Posts: 276
I would be very surprised if the dealer would not let you take it overnight, have you asked him?
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
Oh, recently measured MPG, and now I'm right on the 20 mark. I usually try and use 91 since it's cheaper than 93. I think originally, it had 87 from the dealer.

I doubt you will have buyers remorse after buying this truck. I know I didn't.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
The running board price isn't too bad. Check Ebay for the other items, I have seen them all on there for cheaper. I got the bed mat OEM one, for $70 shipped on Ebay.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
You can get a whole case of Toyota filters at TRD Parts4U for only $34

As for oil changes. I just changed mine on Tuesday and put in Mobile 1 synthetic. I was just over 4300 miles. I thought my Ranger's oil was easy to change...had nothing on the Tacoma. The filter was on pretty tight but other than that, it was a breeze. Don't trust to the dealer what you can do yourself!

Can you really take the PreRunner on the beach without any problems? I didn't get a 4x4 but I did get the lock rear diff. Any advice to taking my new PreRunner in soft sand? Thanks!

I Am now using Amsoil Synthetic oil and filter. I have heard and read many great things about their use in combination together. One draw-back is it is a little on the expensive side ($6.89/qt) however from what I've read it is the best out there. When I drained my oil for my second oil change it looked almost brand new. It is available at the dealership where I bought my truck. You might think the price is high because I bought it at a dealership but this seems to be standard both online and at other stores. Check with your dealer or the Amsoil website for local availability and exact cost. I am now sold on it.

I now have about 11,000 miles on my truck( got it back in Nov), have had none of the problems posted, and am averaging about 19 mpg. I have just recently switched to 93 octane and can already tell the difference. Much smoother and more responsive. My mpg has probably gone down because I've been a little heavy on the gas testing out the changes. I'll update.
  • leob1leob1 Member Posts: 153
Apparently they say oil filters are NOT good at trapping particles under 10 microns so I am doing the 1st change at 1500 miles consdiering the break in period.

I was also told not to use FULL synthetic until the breakin is complete. It is so slippery that it can interfere with breaking parts in.

Nothing beats frequent oil changes(because the filters don't trap everything), so going full synthetic is costly. Prefer synthetic blends like Motorcraft or supertec(Walmart brand); they're good values and better than any conventional oil.
  • leob1leob1 Member Posts: 153
    Geogecko,

thanks for the listings, I will have to make some phone calls.
  • gymbogymbo Member Posts: 37
volley,I was wondering what the trick is when removing the oil filter to keep from getting oil everywhere since the open end of the filter points down.It looks like there might be a drain on bottom of the filter mount.
Hey everyone whats the consensus on running boards versus chrome tube steps.I think the tube steps look better, but wouldn't help much with the paint chipping. They also have color matched running running boards, but wouldn't they present their own paint scuffing problem?
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
gymbo - there is a "lip" that catches any oil, but also when draining I punctured a hole in the top of the filter to release any vaccum seal and most of the oil drained back into the pan (took about 10 min). The lip caught anything that didn't drain out. Thank you Toyota!

If you look at other automobile forums, you find owners of any vehicle piping in that their's is defective. I had defects on my '03 Tacoma and I owned a '94 Hilux as well. The problems with the '03 were taken care of: paint chips--Toyota paid to have it re-painted. The '94 had a bad timing chain in the 22RE that everyone defends as "bullet-proof." And that engine formed spark-knock that forced me to pump premium gas in it and retard the timing until we burned all the junk out of the cylinders. Toyota paid for that too. I didn't sell off either one. And the '94 ran well until I traded it in with 150,000 miles on it. These are only machines. They are not perfect. But I will take a Tacoma over a Dakota any day and in any year. And frankly speaking, the Frontier owners are barking in their forum about problems as well.

I do believe that there is a break-in period, but that shouldn't be any longer than the first oil change. It's a myth that you can't use full synthetic after the first oil change. There are plenty of places that will tell you this. Of course, there are also plenty of people that tell you the opposite. (If new Corvette's ship with full synthetic in the engine to begin with, it must be suitable for break-in...) The good thing about full syn. is that it doesn't break down like regular oil, so your engine doesn't get all gunked up.

I was told by a salesperson that a tube could be purchased to attach to the threads on the bottom of that oil filter cup. Not sure I believe that, but it couldn't hurt to check. The tube would allow the oil to drain down closer to the bottom of the vehicle, so you could put your oil pan under it.

I bought a Tacoma last Saturday, had 218 miles on it as it was a dealer trade from Portland (I live in Seattle). It's a Prerunner V6 with AT and SR5 package. Not the off road version. I originally was looking at the base model 4 cyl, but decided it looked kind of dorky with the small wheels and no fender flares.

Car's been great so far, no problems though I've only driven it a bit over 100 miles. It seems to have serious power -- do others think it is quick? I haven't really tromped on it yet, but just moderate throttle produces big rushes of speed! I like that. Someone mentioned a dash kit which would be nice. Toyota did a good job of making a plastic dash look decent, but -- it's still plastic. I assume this kit is carpet or some such to lay over the plastic? Also considering the tube steps -- the Dee Zee ones. I hate the tubes that have right angle turns but the Dee Zee style looks good. I'd like to actually see them on a truck before buying though. Here's a pic of me and new truck.

I paid $1800 for the Platinum $0 deductable 6yr/100 warranty...was it a rip off? Anyone get the same one or one of the others? Do you mind sharing what you paid and the type you got?

It is pretty amazing how much is included with the Platinum warranty and how little the Toyota Certified one covers.

just in case you want to know if your truck has belt or chain on the v6 2005 open the oil filler and look inside with a flash light you should be able to see the sprocket and the chain.

I paid $1200 for 6yr/75K platinum, $0 deductible. But later, I found that that was even over retail price! Jaffarian Toyota in MA offers it for $840. For your plan (6/100), they say retail is $1300, and their price is $1040.
  • offroader3offroader3 Member Posts: 37
You totally got ripped my man,I paid 1400 for 7 year 100,000,I did a research in Toyota.com under FINANCIAL services,it showed the list of prices for warranties and had them match it...Dealers are the biggest LIARS to tell you...Maybe next time...

Gymbo: I had the Dee Zee tube steps installed and, definately, noticed less dirt and rocks hitting the sides of my truck, now. (Access Cab) It's been snowing/icy here, lately, so they've put lots of sand/gravel on the roads and the sides of my truck are still pretty clean, which means they tube steps are working. (The steps are pretty dirty, mostly on the bottom.)

I thought about getting 17-inch tires but won't, now, after seeing how much gravel/sand flinging the 16-inches do.

Do these warranties kick in AFTER the 3/36 is over or do the run concurrently?
  • engineerbooengineerboo Member Posts: 45
    Leob1: I paid $1,500 for a 7yr/100,000 warranty with a $100 deductible. Are you sure no deductible?

I hope it's not a standard $800 cost for the dealership, nationwide, or I'm going to be pretty upset! Does anybody know for "SURE" (Not, "someone said")

    Boo
  • engineerbooengineerboo Member Posts: 45
Hobo: The 3/36,000 is bumper to bumper with no deductible...yes the extended go beyond that, but at a cost. (If you don't get it when you buy, they'll offer it again in a couple years so don't worry about it.)
  • engineerbooengineerboo Member Posts: 45
How do you post a photo in here?
  • hobohobo Member Posts: 27
    - I definitely got hosed by my dealership on pricing.
    - I called the dealer asking if they would match the price I found and they said no. They didn't care if I canceled.
    - I called Toyota Extra Care and they were very nice there. Said I could cancel and rebuy another warranty without any problem (within 30 days) as long as the car is within 3 yr/36K miles.

So if you're within 30 days of the agreement (fortunately I am) then it seems to be no problem.

I Just took delivery of my 05 Taco last night. I ordered thru VPP (relative works for Toyota). It took exactly 2 months to get it. Mine is an Indigo Ink Pearl double cab 4x2 shortbed with SR5 #8, curtain airbag, and running daylight factory options. Roof rack, running board, and carpet port options. Toyota quoted at $23,546, dealer's price was $23,900. The difference was an additional TDA price of $238 (advertising), and some port option discrepancy. Example, the carpet option quoted at $80, running board $259, which are below published Gulf States option prices. The price includes a $669 (holdback) which will be refunded by Toyota to my relative.

I traded in my 02 Taco and paid a little less than $9k out the door, not a bad depreciation, and I get a much better truck.

The 05 makes the old Tacoma seem like a tin can. It is more spacious, solid and powerful. Ride is much nicer, I'm able to leap thru speed hump at 30mph without a jarring thump. You can notice the better quality by the way the door closes. The old Taco made a slamming noise while the newer one makes a solid, low noise thud. I do notice the engine knocks at high RPM, but that's because it's running on 87 octane. My Mustang V8 does the same thing if I ran low octane gas. My take is if you rev the engine a lot, like city driving and racing at the light, do it a favor and use premium. If you take it easy on the pedal and drive highway, the 87 octane is fine.

I do notice the glove box defect, but it's not a major issue for me. I might ask for a replacement if and when a perfect one comes out, but I can live with it.

When I got home, I noticed that the bed rails don't include any tie down cleats. Do these things come with the truck or are they accessories that you must buy?

Finally, drove to work this morning and had a chance to park side by side with a white 05 Frontier someone just bought about a couple of weeks ago. The Frontier doesn't look so bad, but I thought the Taco looks leaner, has higher clearance despite the Frontier's 17" wheels. I test drove both before deciding on the Taco because of better interior, higher resale value, and of course, I can get the VPP price, which negated the lower price of the Frontier. Regarding the debate between Taco and Frontier, I'd bet most buyers will do the same if the prices are equivalent on both.
