I have a 2.7 access cab 4wd and did not get the towing package with it. Has anybody purchased one aftermarket? If so, which kind, or what would you reccommend? I'm getting a boat and need one soon!

I've purchased hitches from hitches4less.com four times, with good results. Installation was a no brainer for all four Hidden Hitch brand packages.

Remember, there's more to the real tow package than a hitch and wire, so mind your load.

Yes oil cooler and transmission fluid cooler...these can be added as after market products.

I got the same vehicle earlier this week, just different color. Back when, bought two new 2001Toyotas. Washed and waxed and parked way to heck and gone away from everyone, or look for a spot that has more space than the ones around it. Plan on doing the same with this one. Took me a while to find a spot at Outback Steak last night. Doesn't answer your query on side moldings, I know.
Last summer a slightly overworked coworker (very bright, tech savvy, friendly) got in my face to let me know a few things, one of which was parking away from eveyone all the time showed an anti-social streak a mile wide. TRUE STORY!

I know that people have been talking about the paint chipping on the Tacoma and I have seen estimates where 80% of the trucks do not have the paint chipping. I have been looking at a lot of forums in the last two months and it appears the paint chipping has not been wide spread. I have specific pictures of what the paint chipping looks like. Can anybody provide me with any new information on the paint chipping. I am aware that some paint chipping has bee caused by off roading but for the individuals who have just received a new truck can you provide me with more feedback.

I have the paint chipping. I live in the Washington DC area, don't do dirt roads or go offroad. Paint is chipped on every metal body panel except the roof, rockers, bottom of doors, window frames, hood, front edge of access door, bed 1/4 panel in front of the wheel. No chips on the mirrors and only one or two on the front bumper. So far no results from Toyota.

"troutdoorsman" - Fortunately or unfortunately, although I preferenced the JBL stereo system for my taco, I got the tow package instead, so I haven't looked into purchasing a hitch. However, if it's any help, you may want to check out this ebay listing: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7968578390&category=336- 53. It may be of interest to you. Good luck.

You might want to consider the tube steps. It protrudes about 5 inches out and work great vs door dings. Mine just had a big dent (like someone hit it w/ a baseball bat) after some idiot hit it w/ their car door at the parking lot  . The tube step took the damage and not the Taco's door. I'd bet that idiot's door got crumpled. I'm glad I installed the steps.

Hi - Well, I finally bit the bullet and purchased some new wheels, much to my wife's chagrin (sp?) ;) . So, I'm going to be selling the 17" TRD Sport wheels that came with my truck, and probably the tires as well. I haven't installed the new 16"x8" wheels yet, as I need to price and size tires. So, 2-questions: 1) Let me know if you're interested in the tires and/or wheels. 2) I've got the DC LB TRD Sport Pre-Runner(pk package) w/out a lift...what are the largest off-road type tires that I can put on my new wheels? Apparently these wheels have an off-set of "1" (4.5" back spacing). Thanks!!

PS. My truck has just under 4K miles, and the wheels and tires look brand new. I live in So Cal, so no real issues with mud, rain, snow, slipping, etc...(Sometimes it seems like there's too much sun though... :shades: )

"gr8blu1" - Are the tube steps that flimsy that they'd dent in that dramatically from a car door? I had almost talked myself into getting the black westin ones, but now I'm not sure again... :confuse:

I have a 1995 S10 and I have been using Amsoil oil and filters since I bought the truck at 58k miles. My truck currently has 150k miles and I haven't had any problems at all using Amsoil products. I change the filter twice a year and I change the oil once a year. Yeah you heard that right once a year.

I had a Flowmaster muffler installed on my truck. I loved the sound and performance but didn't care for the longevity. I paid $120 for the Flowmaster and it completely rusted out in about a 3 and half years and 50k miles. I'm currently using a Magnaflow muffler. I haven't lost any performance compared to the Flowmaster. So far I've had it for about 2 and a half years with 34k miles.

To update my paint chipping problem. 05 Tacoma, Rad red double cab 4x4 SR5 purchased 2 months ago. The only panel on the truck without chips is the tailgate. The paint shop says it's a bad clear coat (manufacturing) problem. The dealerships solution is to fix the chips, roughen the remaining clear coat and paint over it!!!! Isn't that like painting over rust? THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE. The clear is the issue and they want to put paint over it. The toper is that the dealer says they'll take care of it this time... any additional chipping will be my problem! Further, Toyota "corporate" simply pointed back to the dealer when I contacted them. Anyone interested in filing a class action suit, pipe up with a reply!!!!!

Do you know where the oil cooler is on the 05 taco with tow package?I have a small transmission fluid cooler in front of radiator.I was told the supplemental oil cooler is the part that the oil filter attaches to(it has a couple of hoses attached to it.)
Does anyone have a different setup?
• gr8blue1gr8blue1 Member Posts: 33
Hammaa, good question. I've been thinking about that myself. The dent isn't really that bad. The finish is good as it didn't even got scratched. It's just dented. I'm not sure about the tube's thickness (maybe 1/16" or 1/8" ?). It is a hollow metal tube so it can get dented w/ some good enough force. Can't get wrong if you buy it (no regrets here). It makes the Taco look better too. The westin's maybe thicker. I have the DZ ones.

If your 80% fact is true. We're way over our quota in my area. Also, if this 80% is true... how would you like to be one of the 20% like I am and have a very expensive grief magnet sitting in your garage that you have to see and be pissed about every day?
• pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
Just go to www.imageshack.us and browse through your photos then click on 'host it', it will then show you several different ways that your photo can be viewed. For this website I use the very first address that it gives you at the top. Just copy it, and then paste it in your next reply. It will show up as a picture.

getting flowmaster50 on my 05 taco 4.0litre in the morning.
guy on the phone said that the forty was just to loud and sounded "awful"
had a magnaflow on my 02ranger4.0 and liked it alot but he does not carry them.
anyhow, guy on previous post said he liked the 40 but that it was a bit loud, went on to say that he thought it would mellow with time..does that make sense,,not to me..any comments?
guy wants $168 to install the flow40..sounds fair to me..gotta pay a bit extra to get a custom tip to come out in front of the passenger side tire (lightning settup)
any last minute comments or advice from board is appreciated..\
also, any put high flow air intake on yet..what brand is avail for the 05?

Got friends at local dealership looking out for me, cut the leather down to $899 and included drivers fee ...was in contract...took me awhile to make up my mind on sunroof... they let me have their price and I paid the driver out of my pocket to take it back 2nd trip...under $945 total, took allllllll day during sunroof install, no big deal to me, but driver had a long day waiting, he did quality checks for me as well, that gave me a great comfort level.... this particular webasto and installer claims lifetime warrant for life original owner... can't beat that... individual off the street will get hit up for more expense potentially, I got multiple quotes that kept going up every time I checked....eventually the dealership got sunroof cut to the bone for me, minus profit, and no taxes on that one... !!
I posted this same reply on a toyota nation forum...

Currently own a 02 2WD DC Tacoma. Looking at 05 DC LB w/TRD Off Road Package. On Toyota's website, I can't seem to figure out witch package is the TRD Off Road package with the off road suspension and 265/75/17 BF Goodrich wheels. I've only visited one dealership so far and they only had TRD Sport package'd Tacomas. Looks like these 05's are hard to find with the equipment I need. Thanks for any advice and help. Oh, I'm in So California and might make a trip to Longo Toyota since my family has always had good dealings with them.
• arcpassarcpass Member Posts: 53
Toyota doesn't make a DC LB with Off-Road packages; only with Sports packages. And Longo doesn't deal; check out Frontier Toyota in Santa Clarita. You can check their inventory online & also get a quote online They treated my well.
• kx500racerkx500racer Member Posts: 2
Thanks. I wasn't aware that the TRD Off Road isn't available in LB. Also on the heads up about Longo. Actually, Santa Clarita is closer for me since I'm out in Antelope Valley. Thanks again.

"impulsive" - Very nice. Is your interior the grey or the tan? Either way, it's gorgeous. I just received my order for those exact same wheels off of ebay and I can't wait to put them on. What size tire did you go with? No lift, right? Congrats on the killer taco!! :shades:
• hammaahammaa Member Posts: 79
"kx500racer" - Yup, unfortunately you can't get the off-road pkg with the LB, so you're forced into the sport pkg w/ the hood scoop. I actually like it now, but it bugged the heck out of me at first. Also, the 17" wheels only come with the sport pkg. I'm in North County San Diego, and got my DC LB TRD Sport Pre-Runner (pk pkg) for $600.00 over invoice at my local dealer (after ALOT of shopping and haggling), and this "preference" was placed back in November when you couldn't find these anywhere (took until Feb for delivery). Let me know if you can't get a better deal than that, and I'll give you a name and # to call. Good luck.
• fgs_ncfgs_nc Member Posts: 9
Thanks for the photos! Sunroof looks awesome. The lack of sunroof offering by Toyota had me really bummed. But now looks like no need to worry (I've got a SB Offroad DC on order). Do you know which model of the 700 series you have installed?? I'm curious to know opening size (total and viewing) and I could tell from model number. As soon as I take delivery (June, I've told), I'll be visiting my local installer!
• impulsiveimpulsive Member Posts: 11
To answer the last 2 replies to my post... I stuck with 16" wheels and put on 265/70/16 Michelin LTX tires... got lucky with a credit of $240 for original dunlops (?), sold OEM alloys on Ebay, but didn't really profit on that.. No lift, not a TRD, didn't need that package anyway. The sunroof is a Webasto Hollandia 749, largest one in width for sure... The only wiring setback I have to follow up on is the auto close feature is not working, but it's not affecting any of the other controls...think the installer knows what the slip up is on that snafu. The installer put the interior back together and customized the upper console back in place pretty darn good, he knew his stuff and stand by it if something turns out troublesome to me. Don't just use any installer, find one with a reputation that precedes them... seriously. For some reason that webasto has a great warranty here in the U.S. and the company that installed it isn't going anywhere overnight.
Interior is taupe, not charcoal.

I love the Flow 40 on my truck. I like being able to hear my exhaust though. If you don't want to really hear it in the cab then go with the 50 or Delta Flow 40.

Anyway, whether you get the 40 or the 50, it will mellow out and quiet down some after the new exhaust i "broken-in" I will take a couple of weeks for the truck to adjust to the more free flowing exhaust.

$168 isn't a bad price for the whole thing. Is the shop giving you new piping from the cat back? Or just replacing from the muffler back? I am not sure if I would go with in front of the wheel exit on the tip. Mine exits at the stock location and if I don't wash my truck for a couple weeks or more I get soot on the rear quarter panel area. I am not sure if I would want this soot on my wheels (if the tip exits in front of it) as it may not be the best for the clear coat on them. If you wash your truck often then nothing to worry about. Just cruise and enjoy your new sound!

Hey volley - Have you noticed any difference :confuse: to your mpg with the new exhaust?

Has anyone with tube steps checked to see if those steps stop car and truck doors from hitting the side of the truck? I read the post about a similar occurance, but I would like to know for sure before shelling out the bucks.

If they offer protection, I think they are probably one of the best investments for this truck without doubt.

Thanks for any responses.

I thought I might post some pics of the new aftermarket floor mats I got, in case some of you are looking for some good floormats. These are Nifty Products, Extreme Catch-All floor mats. I got them from www.perfromanceproducts.com They were 10% off right now, but were still expensive. About $120 for the whole Double Cab set. But they are real nice and I like 'em a lot. I work at a steel mill where my boots get oily and dirty so I had to have rubber floor mats. I did have to trim a little rubber off of the rear floormat where the center console, between the front seats, sticks back a little. They are available in grey, black, and tan.

I did mention the exhaust was a bit loud, however to clarify, the exhaust sounded great, what I wasn’t crazy about was the noise level in the cabin. I’ve had it just over a week now, and I don’t know if I’m getting used to it, or if it’s breaking in, but I’m very happy with the setup.

That price sounds about right. I got new tubing, hangers, the flowmaster and a stainless steel tip for $160. I had it running out the factory location. No complaints here, absolutely love it.

Also, I had a Python alarm installed, along with new speakers. I replaced the 6 ½’s in the back (my buddy says we might have been able to fit 8”’s if I really wanted to) and replaced the 6 X 9’s and tweeters with Kicker 6 ½ component system. Sounds much cleaner and crisper, but lacking power. I’ll putting in a 4 channel amp and a 8” sub soon. There’s room for the amp under the driver’s seat, and I’ll be making a box and locating it on the floor in the back, basically extending the center console. For the amp I’ll have two channels put out to the components in the front and the other two channels power the sub. That’ll drown out an exhaust noise in the cabin.

I was thinking about getting the underneath of my truck coated with a heavy layer of Line-X spray on bedliner. They will spray that stuff wherever you want it. I've seen the whole interior of a serious 4-wheeling Jeep sprayed with it. It was nice.

It would really protect the underneath of the truck, and greatly reduce the road and exhaust noise. I guess you could get it sprayed on the the underneath of the hood too, to reduce engine noise.

Picked up my '05 Tacoma access cab PreRunner two weeks ago and love the truck but noticed there seems to be some excess wind noise at freeway speeds which appears to be coming from the windshield area but could possibly be coming from the top of the driver's door or even the sliding rear window...

Has anyone else out there had a similar experience with the new Tacoma? It even crossed my mind that the original windshield might have been busted and replaced with an inadequate seal.

Thanks for any help you guys can provide!

As for the Tube Steps, I don't really think that they help unless your vehicle is raised, which I'm planning to do. Or unless someone has a lowered car and is parked next to you. I got the first scratch on my passenger side door this week and was I mad. I parked next to a 4 door Saturn and I know for sure it was that vechicle that made the scratch. If a Saturn could make a scratch I think any other vehicle could do it too. I had to buff that scratch out. Luckly it wasn't bad. I know for sure now that I'm going to raise my truck at least 3" and put on some 32" tires. Hopefully this will solve the problem.

I do regret that I should have bought the chrome Dee Zee's. Didn't know that they offered them. Wonder if my dealer would give me a deal with a new set or trade?

Sorry to tell you this, but you are far from alone. I have precisely the same wind noise and the service department at my dealer insists the noise is normal and is coming from wind movement around the side mirror. They have test driven it twice. Many others on this forum and the TundraSolutions forum have noted the loud wind noise from the driver's side window. A recent review of the Tacoma and Frontier in the New York Times also noted this annoying, loud and constant noise. My solution has been to elevate the radio volume. Of course, when I have a passenger who wants to talk, I have problem. The other day I turned down the radio for my wife and then she says "What's that loud wind noise? Is'nt your window closed?"

If anybody has any good news on dealing with this problem (other than the radio volume solution) I'd sure be happy to hear about it!
