Transmisson stops working while engine still running

Our 2005 Chry 300 Touring makes a whinning noise and then after a few miles the transmission stops working yet the engine is still running. Any ideas on what could be causing this to happen?

    Gee, hard to guess from this distance. How's the transmission fluid level? If I had to take a wild guess, it sounds like the transmission pump is ailing. Loud noises from the transmission is never a good thing.
