Expedition transmission problems

I have a 2003 Expedition, and it ran and drove good, but started to smoke, I took it down and redone the heads, it run's like it use to but the transmission when put in gear it would not move forward or reverse, then it moved in reverse but only went forward when the engine was reved high and now it wants to move forward in reverse, neutral and drive with no movement except forward. I need some help to go in the right direction before I take it out and replace it if it don't need it.
