That 2.0T is a nice engine. But we were comparing normally-aspirated engines here. Hyundai's 3.8L V6 does 263 hp, so the 3.6L V6 has an edge there. But I thought it was all about torque?? ;)

The old 3.5L V6 is history (thank goodness)--replaced by the new 3.3L and 3.8L powerplants.

Hyundai does offer turbodiesels--just not in the U.S. Yet?

"That 2.0T is a nice engine. But we were comparing normally-aspirated engines here."

Oh, I didn't know there were ground rules in comparing engines. Sorry. Do they need to be made in Korea too?

"The old 3.5L V6 is history"
Wow, you make it seem like it was 10 years ago. I didn't realize 2005 was so long ago :)

"Hyundai does offer turbodiesels--just not in the U.S. Yet?"

Yes, and from what I hear, they are "spectacular." Read TopGear's opinion :)

But what about the 2.7L? I guess you must have forgotten. Wouldn't want to forget the pinnacle of engineering talent that designed that beast.

"But I thought it was all about torque??"

    oh, it is! VW 3.6: 265 ft-lbs at 2750 RPMS. Hyundai 3.8: 255 at 4500.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
I haven't heard of any plans to use the recently-upgraded 2.7L V6 in the new Elantra. I think it's more likely they'd drop the 2.4L I4 in there if they wanted to do a variant with more power.

A note on VW. My brother was a die hard fan of VW having driven his '87 Jetta 260,000 miles and then a '96 Passat well over 100K. I once owned an Audi A4. My best friend had a '02 Jetta. All three of us agree that VW quality is at an all time low. The plant in Mexico really hurt.

All three of us are looking to, and buying, Asian based on quality and value. VW is offering neither. Hyundai is an up and coming car company.

The new Elantra for '07 should be a huge success. Great warranty, great interior, good exterior styling, and a more than acceptable powertrain for this class.

Stop beating the torque / horsepower issue to death. It's over and Hyundai wins! By a couple of laps over the hare.

I remember reading somewhere some scuttlebutt about the Elantra maybe getting the 2.7 V6 sometime in the future but cannot remember where. Hyundai has the 200HP 2.0 Turbo for that Accent SR concept maybe that could be in the Elantras future.

Would love to consider one but don't count on one anytime soon.

First review of the Rabbit is in and they love it!

    by germancarfan1

Aren't you in the wrong forum since this forum is about a Korean car?

Speaking of which, aren'tm you posting about the first drive and not the long term reliability issues related to how VW was addressed in the first place . . . in a HYUNDAI forum?
  • sonatabeansonatabean Member Posts: 201
    Jaxs1 -

You state, Actually 30 highway 22 city is pretty bad for this class of car aimed at economy buyers. You can expect that mileage or better in many larger cars with V6 engines nowadays.
The Rabbit looked like it would be something to think about until I saw how poor the fuel economy was.
On top of that VW reliability today is more like Hyundai reliability from 10 years or more ago.

That would be our collective point here.

Lots of money for German engineering outsourced down the [non-permissible content removed] and plenty of petro-dollars to boot.

Yeah! YEAH!!! Gimme summa that! It's not like I want my car to run so I can just park it at the shop. I don't actually NEED money in my checking account, either!

Ooops - wait: I forgot. I'm a grownup now and I gotta get to work to make the bucks to pay the bills.

    Scratch that idea . . . .

When I was at my Hyundai dealer last week the service manager told me that it was 50-50 that the 2008 Sonata will get the 2.2L turbodiesel. Hyundai does not want to lose sales to Honda when they bring over the diesel Accord in 2008. (I've heard the diesel Accord is all but a done deal). However, I don't think Hyundai will drop the diesel in the Elantra until they see how well the diesel Sonata sells.

I'd be really excited if we could stay focused on the Elantra rather than on other makes/models. My life is so mundane that this would consistute a notable event... indulge me :)

i used love VW, but their recent history really turns me off. VW GTI is a beautiful and fun car, but i wouldn't dare buying one because of its reliability and outrageous price(25-27k!!).

VW has to prove it to me that they can build a reliable car and price it reasonably. i've had many unreliable cars before, and i do not want to go through that again.

    and about an'affordable' rabbit...

i went to VW dealer today, and the 4 door rabbit was $20900! my GF is about to buy sonata gls v6 for 16k OTD! even though she liked the looks of the rabbit(she likes it because it's small and she loves interior). but the price was out of her reach.

she really likes the new elantra and would buy one in a heartbeat, but she has a patience of 4 year old...

I hadn't noticed it before, but there is a lot of first-gen Tiburon in the HD's side profile.

sharp car, even in the dreaded white... i like the angry façade. vaguely reminiscent of the old peugeot 505...
  • joe97joe97 Member Posts: 2,248
Great pics!! The white really brings out the overall shape of the car, and the nice lines. Thumbs up!!
  • choe13choe13 Member Posts: 348
Honestly i don't like the lines of the side of this car. The Azera and Santa Fe lines work , but it looks plain weird on the elantra. Looks like it got into an accident or the machine malfunctioned at the auto plant.

I know for the consumers that dont care much about looks rather than for example value, interior etc, this car will sell its share, but since i'm the type of buyer that puts emphasis on exterior for now judging by pics i wouldn't buy one.

are subjective, because I like the looks of this 2007 Hyundai Elantra better than the late model Elantra's looks that we've seen for the last several years. I liked the looks of the Elantra back in 1999 and test drove one of those, for some reason this new Elantra's looks remind me more of that late 90's Elantra somewhat. A side-by-side comparo would probably discount that seeming similarity quite a bit, though.

This new look hints at Corolla lines to me from the back a bit-yet it has way better design lines than any Corolla does when you follow the lines around it's body. Nice job, Hyundai. What's really nice, too, is that Hyundai quality is now basically on par with Toyota's and Honda's and you'll get a much finer Long-Haul Warranty.

Kind of makes me wonder if the 2007 Kia Spectra will change in it's body design. Anyone heard anything on that? I think this new Elantra will sell in boatloads upon boatloads for Hyundai. Angry guppy look notwithstanding! :P

my friends in korea told me. all of them didn't like the way it looked in pics, but they were surprised how fresh they looked in person. i can't wait!
  • choe13choe13 Member Posts: 348
I don't doubt this could be a possibility. Though with the azera even though the pics didn't look well, i had a feeling it was going to be a looker in real life. I don't get that optimism with the new elantra. I just don't like the middle lines all waving that way and how it drowns near the end and front of the car. Maybe its not as noticely in real life or certain colors will work better with it(black so far looks the best)

    we shall see
  • kingsalmonkingsalmon Member Posts: 97
I think the side profile of the car looks the best! At first glance, I thought the front looked to corolla-ish. But it was a bad color (dark red). Anyhow, it looks the best in black, blue, or silver. I like the angry look, but can it be angry without being cute?

Anyhow, I guess I'll have to see it in person... :D

    very nice
  • doohickiedoohickie Member Posts: 949
The sedan looks very much like the XD hatch from a lot of angles.
  • tsgeiseltsgeisel Member Posts: 352
But, but, I *like* dark red. Or, rather, it's what I've got now, so I'm growing to like it.

But if they release a purple one like someone had in a picture long ago in this thread, that's where the buyer's remorse will kick in. I've sorta wanted a graple car for a while...
  • kingsalmonkingsalmon Member Posts: 97
I don't think I could ever do a purple car. No matter how much I like the car, grape will never do... Anyhow, the commercials make the car look even better. It looks cooler when in motion.
  • doohickiedoohickie Member Posts: 949
Hopefully they will tweak it more toward the smaller Lexus and/or Acura models in terms of styling in the next facelift; the basic proportions are there, I think.

Just wondering if anyone knows if the new Elantra is similar in size to the new Optima.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Elantra is smaller, inside and out. Optima is much closer in size to the Sonata.

Hyundai says that every new vehicle coming out of their Alabama plant has at least 2.3 miles on the odometer. Now we can see how they put those miles on! ;)
  • doohickiedoohickie Member Posts: 949
Awesome! Is that for U.S. consumption?
  • doohickiedoohickie Member Posts: 949
Also from that same forum, a report from someone who saw the new HD up close. Right off the top, he mentions the appearance relative to his own XD (current generation) Elantra:

It's not as big as I thought it would be. I expected it to be significantly taller, longer, and wider. It looks a little taller, but not longer or wider. The lines are soft and smooth and flow well. I find it to be a good-looking car, and much better in person than my impressions from the photos.
  • sonatabeansonatabean Member Posts: 201
Namely, "Will the USA get the cool, Sabby-looking, Elantra 5-door hatchback?"

I love the hatch - I really, really, really do: it's sort of sporty, practical, and quirky all at the same time.

    Anyone know???
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
With the new styling, it may not be a Saab story.
  • sonatabeansonatabean Member Posts: 201
The groovy hatch has become a sedan with a trunk.

The Elantra GT hatch had a unique niche in the market with that feature.

I guess if there is no hatch by Hyundai in 2007, I'll have to just Saab myself to sleep.
  • snakeweaselsnakeweasel Member Posts: 19,592
    Hatch????

Hey Hyundai, if your listening, don't do the hatch bring back the wagon instead.

  • doohickiedoohickie Member Posts: 949
If you want a wagon, buy a Spectra5. I hope a future Elantra hatch is a fastback. It actually holds more cargo volume than the similarly sized Spectra5.
  • snakeweaselsnakeweasel Member Posts: 19,592
I don't want a Spectra5, I have a Elantra Station Wagon and would buy another one in a heartbeat if they still made them.

Where exactly will the iPod AUX jack be located on the '07 Elantra? Glove box? Center arm rest?
  • jaxs1jaxs1 Member Posts: 2,697
It might be located in South Korea. Not sure the iPod jack, Nav, climate control, etc. applies to U.S. models.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
The aux jack for iPods etc. will be available on the 2007 Elantra in the U.S., according to HMA:

The high-volume Elantra GLS Premium Package offers a 172-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with six speakers and Hyundai’s first auxiliary jack, which allows iPods® and other portable MP3 players to be connected to the vehicle audio system.

(The SE and Limited trims have all the features of the GLS Premium Package. What is not clear is if the upgrade stereo on the Limited includes an aux jack.)

One thing that I can't find any mention of in Hyundai's info on the 2007 Elantra is traction control. I would miss that feature if it were not available; it's come in handy a couple of times on my '04 GT.

Got word from a General Manager at my local Hyundai dealership that the new 07' Elantra has been in production the past two weeks. Expected to hit the dealers around early October. Hope its worth the wait.

    Dan,

Ask him if he knows if the hatch is coming later.

The sedan is cute, but I SOOOO want the hatch!
