I like small, dusters and sticks. But would probably pick the Buick. As always, depends on exactly what you want to do with it, and what tickles your fancy.
Best way to go is to buy a hi-po crate engine. You can buy 400 HP for not all that much money. With the stock engine, to get anywhere you'd have to consider new heads and manifold at the very least, and a better carburetor and ignition system. And headers, and exhaust, and fuel pump. And then you have to introduce them to each other and make them shake hands.
With a crate engine, it's all pretty much worked out for you, plus you get stronger internals, better cam, etc.
hmmm... bidding is at $15k now with an hour to go. Seems a bit much for a 10-yr-old resto, I think. As I said before, a #2 car is supposedly worth $13k per Hagerty. I'm doubtful this qualifies as a #2.

That one would sound pretty fast. If you really need to go much faster, buy something newer with real suspension, brakes and safety gear.
I was reading Kitmans column in the latest automobile today, about what a death trap his 1970 standard-triumph, or hillman, one of those, really is. Especially with a hopped up motor. He warns passengers that if a cat jumps out of a tree and lands on the roof, odds are they all die.

What this tells me, is never try to restore a mainstream car.
Nothing in that price range/category could compare to a Duster. The tough as nails slant sixes, the Torqueflights and the solid construction put them way ahead of their competition at the time. These were just good cars! Rebuild the front end once and you were good to go!
These were 150,000 mile cars (or more) at a time when most cars were pretty tired around the 80,000 mile mark!
Yep, they drove just as badly at 10,000 miles as they did at 110,000 miles!
Yes but one sale one time. I think the buyer is a b it ahead of the market, but not by too much. I would have thought $16K--$16.5K is about right. So add 10% for "auction fever" and there you go.
I think Hagerty is too low. Sometimes their prices are way off base. I use them more for their "trends" and timelines.
I look at a lot of 60s cars and it's been my experience that $13K range cars are a bit needier than this one appears to be.
Of course, there's nothing like actually looking at one to get the most accurate picture. Cameras do lie, quite well thank you very much.
my thoughts (I know, scary place to be), are that a few $k or so if you really want that particular one is still in normal range. Can only really saw it is out of market norm if you can go find a few more basically identical ones. Maybe he just loved that car, or decided that taking something like that white one, at a cheaper price, and getting from there to here would cost more than the extra he paid? At least from the pictures, and comments, this was a really nice car.
now, if someone dropped $35K on it, you could argue it was nuts!
There's no one number. Price guides at their best are a "ballpark". But really for $18K he should have been able to buy a real GS 350 or for a few thousand more a base 350 Convertible.
I don't so much mind the pearl effect inside the black stripes, but the red down the center of the hood and that awfulness under the hood put it over the top.

mecum received my check yesterday, confirmed my bidders status, and assigned me an agent.
I just sent an email to the agent asking her to remove the '66 Mustang Fastback and the white Skylark from my list. I am only bidding now on the '65 Lemans and the Duster. I raised my cap to $17,500 on the former and $16,500 on the latter. I'd imagine both will go for more, but I'm just not all that comfortable without seeing them in person. The Duster appears to be immaculate, but, as shifty said, pics are typically generous. The Lemans is such a crapshoot in my mind because, while it appears very nice, it is largely unoriginal as far as I can tell (wish they'd post VIN numbers!).

You could ask for a VIN #.
That dreadful GS clone has a masterful understatement attached to the ad---"a bit personalized".
Well since they offered the 350 Olds diesel as an option, and the only other engine is the 7.0L 425 cid, I expect it's the notorious diesel all right. But you are correct, it should have a little teensy "diesel" label under the Cadillac script on the fender and on the trunk lid. Best way to know would be if he had an engine shot---it says "DIESEL" in big letters on the air filter housing.
I have a suspicion it is an engine actually out of an Olds. I just liked it for the lack of frilly options, I think those are handsome cars if properly equipped.
I like that Eldo looks too, but actually prefer the Riviera of the same gen. Some like the Toronado while others don't at all. To me, all three are nice looking though. But skip the diesel !
I once considered swapping the '95 Neon's 3-speed auto with the 5-speed manual they made for those cars at the time. My older brother told me to nix that idea.
'18 Porsche Macan Turbo, '16 Audi TTS, Wife's '19 VW Tiguan SEL 4-Motion
If one started with the Olds diesel, would swapping in an Olds gasser be fairly straightforward?
Oh that's a thought...but no, not exactly straighforward. You'd have to fit a gasoline tank, and fuel pump and lines and computer and harness, etc. etc. It might also be illegal.
Well, the Pontiac came and went today. I was at 17,500 and it sold for 20,000. Came through about 5 mins after they went off the air at 3:30 today. It was no reserve, so they spent absolutely NO time on it. I watched it on delay on the computer and it seriously lasted MAYBE 30 secs. No other car went that quick while they were on tv. It got 3 bids: $15k, $17.5k, and $20k. Not that it matters since I wasn't willing to go higher just based on a few low-res pics.

I get a laugh when they declare "The reserve's off! Now folks can bid it up, knowing they'll get the car!"
Then no more bids, typically...
