try taking your pics in a well shaded area. i think the colors will render better that way. We just bought a black SXT, so no probs getting the car to take a good picture.

No...mines inferno red *L* I liked it the best out of all the colors also. Since I bought my car I've only now seen 2 others on the road around here.

The engine conrols will sense a lean mixture because of reduced back pressure (if any) and slightly richen the fuel mixture, which overall could decrease mpg. In the old days when cars were carbureted, changing exhaust and intake could lean and burn valves, not anymore.

does anyone know how flat the rear seats in the dodge caliber fold down? I checked one out at the local dealership and I found the seats to fold down to about 15 degrees shy of being compleatly flat. Of course, the photos edmunds have posted show the seats folding down flat to about 0 degrees. Can anyone who owns a caliber clear this up for me? thanks.
  • nonnemachernonnemacher Member Posts: 98
The SXT seats fold very very flat, including the front passenger seat. The SE rear seats do not fold quite as flat, but they should be able to go lower than you describe ... maybe the rear headrests were colliding with the back of the front seats... In some cases, you need to move the front seats forward a bit to get the rears all the way down.

well the calibers sister vechical the compas was just test driven by the site http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FirstDrives/articleId=115901

They seem impressed , which is great news for this platform. HOpefully the partiot impresses also . Dodge could have a big hit on thier hand
  • grendel_cavegrendel_cave Member Posts: 27
I'm going to test drive a SXT manual the dealership is bringing in for me to test. I'll make sure to carefully go over the rear seats then. Have you noticed if you have to do something special with the seats belts inorder to get the flat, flat lay down that you describe?

I'm coming over from driving a SUV and really need the space for all of my dive/caving gear. I just can't afford the gas anymore that my hungry SUV requires. I'm deciding between the Matrix and the Caliber. The matrix gets a little better gas mileage and has about 5 cubic feet more of space (48 vs. 53). Visibility is a little better in the matrix, the rear hath opens up wider, and there are more tie downs. But all the plastic in the matrix feels a little flimsy and I hate the design. The caliber, however, looks awesome, has quite a few special features, and feels like a more solid, substanial car. Consumer Reports rates the Matrix about one point lower than the Caliber. Any opinions as to which vehicle is superior? :confuse:
  • kato1kato1 Member Posts: 64
having owned a matrix 5 speed for almost a year and taking people on many test drives in the caliber, i feel partially qualified to respond. i'll highlight what i believe are significant differences.

    1) gas mileage: i always exceeded the 30 mpg city/36 mpg highway estimates in the matrix. most highway driving at 65-70 mph yielded 36-38 mpg. in contrast, most customers with the 5 speed caliber are getting pretty close to 28-32 mpg on the highway. i consider this difference pretty significant.

    2) overall interior noise: the caliber is a bit quieter when accelerating or cruising at highway speed. less road/engine noise intrudes into the cabin. the caliber likely has more sound insulation, but this also contributes a heavier vehicle which in turn affects mileage.

the matrix only gives you one engine choice (not counting the xrs-different animal entirely)whereas you have more choices with the caliber. the matrix auto tranny can feel a bit slow at times, where the manual tranny is a much better drive. it could use a bigger engine, but this would likely be at the expense of mileage.

    3) reliability concerns: will the caliber be reliable in the long term? we dont know, only time will tell. history is not on dam/cry side here, but the caliber may prove to be relatively trouble free for a 10 yr owner. toyota has proven to produce cars that will last a long time with as minimal a cash outlay as possible.

    4) this is obvious, but the looks of both cars appeal to some, while others hate them. caliber is much more aggressive looking, while the lines of the matrix are smoother. its really a choice of personal tastes. dont buy a car if you dont like its looks. this may seem trivial, but people who hate the looks of their car end up trading them in too soon and losing $$ in the process.

both cars seem pretty close in terms of cargo carrying abilities, though the larger hatch opening in the matrix could be advantageous depending on your cargo. the matrix does have that plastic cargo area, which i personally would have preferred to be carpeted. the matrix cargo area was very easy to use and the opening glass in the back hatch came in handy.

if mileage is a chief concern, the matrix definitely gives you the best combination of cargo carrying capacity and gas mileage (there are hatches like honda fit that will beat matrix in mpg a bit, but dont have quite the cargo carrying ability). if the looks of the caliber are appealing and gas mileage isnt so important, caliber might be your car. i dont think one could say either car is "superior." you seem really sold on the looks of the caliber and you dont seem to care much for the matrix. if the caliber mileage is enough of an upgrade from what you were driving, go for it.

I just make sure the seat belts are to the outside of the car, so they do not interfere with the rear seats folding down... I've not had a problem with this and I've made several trips to the lumber yard followed by taking kids around...

PS: Depending on the level of equipment, the Caliber may save you a couple thousand $ over the Matrix, which will go a longer way than most think in terms of buying a few additional gallons of gas each month. Also, the Caliber has side airbags standard, I'm not sure about the Matrix. The CVT comes with ABS also.
  • jstant01jstant01 Member Posts: 65
Have you considered the Pontiac Vibe? The Vibe has much more aggressive styling (IMHO) than the Matrix, although it's still not as muscular as the Caliber.

I have a 2005 5-speed Vibe. I just took a weekend trip to Ohio where the Vibe's features came in SO handy. MPG = 39.3 for the highway trip at 65-70mph.

I was helping my sister move, so down went the Vibe's seats. We were amazed at how much stuff we could fit in there! I love the versatility, because I took a troop of 5 people down with me, and then turned the car into a mini-hauler. How many vehicles let you do that, and still get almost 40mpg?

Yes, the Vibe has the same plastic in back, but let me tell you - it is handy when you are hauling a load of stuff - especially if it is dirty or wet. I put a blanket down to catch as much dirt as possible and to hopefully prevent scratches. When I was done, I pulled the blanket out, wiped down the area with a rag, and put the seats back up - all in less than 5 minutes.

In terms of cost, yes the Vibe will probably cost a bit more than the Caliber or the Matrix. It just depends on what you want and what you like, I guess. All 3 will probably provide the type of versatility it sounds like you're looking for.

Consumer Reports rates the Caliber higher than the Matrix?
That's great news! I was waiting for Consumer Reports to do a Full Review on the Caliber before I bought one - although I'll still wait for the 2008 model as Consumer Reports also ran an article recently saying to Never buy a car in the first model year or the first model year of a major redesign, regardless of the make/model.
When did Consumer Reports review it? I just got my new Consumer Reports (I have a subscription) a couple of days ago and there was nothing on the Caliber...
  • kato1kato1 Member Posts: 64
good point about the vibe. some people do find its looks more appealing than the matrix. since its just a matrix with different exterior styling, you get a different look on a toyota platform, engine etc..

yeah, there were plenty of ocassions where i broke 40 mpg on purely hwy driving in my matrix, though i must stress i would not have liked the matrix in an auto transmision (though i would say that about many other cars, including the caliber)
  • grendel_cavegrendel_cave Member Posts: 27
I have to apologize about the consumer reports review. After your post, I looked at the review again and its actually a MSN/consumer reports "snap shot" page. http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/ConsumerReportsSnapshot.aspx?year=2007&make=Do- - dge&model=Caliber
    and
    http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/jedlicka.aspx?year=2006&make=Toyota&model=Matr- - ix

The review is done by Jed Licka who has been doing auto reviews since 1968 for the Chicago-Sun Times. He rated the Caliber a 8.0 out of ten and the Matrix a 7.0 out of ten. Customer ratings are about equal: 9.1 (DC) vs. 9.0 (TM)
Unfortunately, the CR review will not be out until August or September according to their webpage. Sorry about the confusion.

Chrome door handle mod!! Only $75 on Ebay!
  • habalanchehabalanche Member Posts: 57
They look nice.Did you have to open up the interior door panels?and also how do you add pics to the posts, and how much did it cost for the tint job. That's a high priority when I get mine. :shades:
  • caliberchiccaliberchic Member Posts: 402
Nope, they are covers that go on w/ 3m tape. The tint was $155.

Pics have to be hosted somewhere and the linked over. Here are more pics of the handles, how they are before installation to give you all an idea of how they go on. It was super easy and they are a solid addition.

Thanks My R/T when and if it comes (8 weeks and counting, and am not happy w/dealer because they don't want to honor the $500 rebate that has expired since I ordered the car) has the chrome handles .I was just curious as to how they were installed.Once I see how the handles look on the silver,I may get the chrome fuel door. Also going to get the cargo area carpet.Good price on the Tint.
  • lexan1965lexan1965 Member Posts: 118
That looks nice CC, do they "tape" over the plastic handles?
If u like them and think they work well I may have to buy some of them as well as a chrome gas lid too.
  • katiescaliberkatiescaliber Member Posts: 45
am not happy w/dealer because they don't want to honor the $500 rebate that has expired since I ordered the car

Habalanche, I believe you are entitled to the rebate still as this is Dodge's policy, it is not up to the dealership. It may even be your local law for them to still honor it. The only way I can see them maybe wiggling out of it is if you didn't make a deposit or downpayment when you ordered... I would call Dodge Customer Service or Dodge Customer Care and ask what their policy is concerning this.

I ordered mine when the rebate was in effect and it arrives next week, I will still be getting the rebate.

    Good luck!
  • katiescaliberkatiescaliber Member Posts: 45
    Ok, I lied .......

My dealer just called me and told me my car is in (DOES HAPPY DANCE!! :) )

But, he told me that they can't give me the $500 deposit, because Dodge won't let them. They said they fought for me to get it (and I believe them because they are a very nice and honest family owned small dealer) but they are saying no. Plus, I am getting the Dodge Friends and Family discount and they said Dodge HAS to give you every other discount available with that discount.

So anyway, they said the $500 rebate was when the 2006 (or 2006.5) models were being built and mine wasn't built until they switched over to the true 2007 models, which are not eligible for the rebate. That sucks.

They said they thought mine would be order-protected since I put down a deposit and everything but Dodge won't budge. I'm really peeved about that too.

Oh well.... MY CAR IS IN!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • habalanchehabalanche Member Posts: 57
That's great that your car is in.Not so great that we are both out $500 each.I can't back out now,I've got a bunch of accessories in my garage waiting for the car.My dealer said that they may be offering something else next month so hopefully I can catch a break on that end.Iwas told last week at least 3 more weeks to go.
  • katiescaliberkatiescaliber Member Posts: 45
    Okay, so I lied again.

I just called the Chrysler Rebate Center @ 1-800-227-0757, and they said if I ordered my car when the rebate was going on, then yes I still get the rebate. Its under the Sold Order Price Protection, and you should get it too.

The whole thing about 2006/2007 was just a confusion.

So I called the dealer and spoke to the manager and he said yes I do get the rebate, the salesman was just confused.

I was upset because I have buyers order that says I get the rebate. That wouldn't be fair of them not to honor it.

The rebate center said the dealer has to submit it a different way, maybe that is where the confusion comes from.

But if I were you, I would call the Rebate Center too.

Do you have a buyers order? Did you put down a deposit? You should get the rebate too. $500 is worth investigating and fighting for.

    Good luck!

 Well, I left work today to find my passenger front window mysteriously shattered!!!! There was nothing inside the car that would have broken the window... Not sure what happened but the cop said it could have had a hairline crack and the heat made it break?? But there was a hole about 4" in middle of the window when I walked up... And the glass was inside the car. I think someone broke it. I am so pissed!! It is at the dealer now... Either way, New Jersey sucks and you cant have a nice car. :( :confuse:
  • habalanchehabalanche Member Posts: 57
That sucks about the window. Not much you can do though. It wasn't hot enough to cause that here in Jersey today.Besides if theres glass on the inside it was broken from the outside.
  • calibreathcalibreath Member Posts: 22
"the salesman was just confused". I just bought a used copy of the book "How To Buy Your New Car For A Rock-Bottom Price". The author tells some shocking truths about these con artists called car dealers.
  • katiescaliberkatiescaliber Member Posts: 45
Yea well, not all car dealers are con artists.

My salesman WAS just confused, because this rebate has to be submitted a different way than normal. Besides, the sales manager told me I was elligible and that he had to spend some time on the phone to figure out how to get the rebate submitted.

I do agree though that most dealers suck.

Mine just happens to be one of the honest, nice ones.

Anyone in Delaware or close by- I highly recomment Holden Dodge in Dover. They treat you with respect and friendliness.

My husband and I have both worked in typical dealerships (you know-liars and buttheads) and Holden Dodge is certainly out of the ordinary.

I ordered my 2007 Caliber R/T on April 12th, and I'm still waiting. Anyone else waiting this long? The dealer is no help what so ever. The promised 6 - 10 weeks has come and gone.

Anyone near Belvedere, Illinois? Light a fire under their ...

If and when I do get it, I am actually looking forward to it. I test drove one and loved the room. Being 6'6" aint easy in a smaller car. Going from a 4X4 Dakota to a 4 banger is going to take some getting used to.

But I have a funny feeling I'll be buying winter tires and rims the day I pick it up from the dealer.

Well join the crowd,I ordered my black sxt April 5/06.
Icalled DCX today(1-800-992-1997)gave them VIN# and they
told me it was on the finish trim line today.
I had called DCX Canada previously and they know nothing
or are not willing to be bothered.
Having said that I did get a fifty(50)dollar voucher from
DCX Canada good towards accessories at the dealership.
Funny thing is the actuation date is filled out by hand
    for JULY 22/06.
Do you think they know delivery date??????
Hope you see your wheels soon.
  • habalanchehabalanche Member Posts: 57
I've been waiting 8 weeks for my R/T and dealer keeps saying "give it a couple of weeks".All they have is a VIN but no build date.
  • moparfancanadamoparfancanada Member Posts: 18
How did you get the VIN#? Who provides that?
  • habalanchehabalanche Member Posts: 57
Check with the dealer. The vehicle is assigned a VIN b4 it is built.Currently my Caliber is in what the dealer called "D" status meaning it has a VIN and is ready to be built but not yet on the assembly line.
  • bigtsrbigtsr Member Posts: 149
I went to the dealership I bought the car at and
asked for it,they gave a printout showing VIN and VON plus
status it was D at that time.
If you have good relations with your dealer he should
    give it to no problems.
I am in Burlington ON and have dealt with this dealer
    since 1985.

After waiting 5 weeks I decided to take one from inventory. Identical except for moonroof. The sales manager at Chat ham Chrysler as my license plates were being changed presented me with a bill of sale which lowered the value of my trade in by $300. I also had to accept a dealership added option of $249. (glass etching). A week and a half ago I phoned Chrysler and they gave out a $50. coupon for phoning that day. After a week without a reply i sent an email which w3as supposed to be replied to in 3 days. This is the fourth day.
Buyer Beware! Check out Toyota etc...

Here you go, I pulled this off Magna flow website. Flowmaster is a more known muffler manufacturer so I am pretty sure the same rings true.
    thhttp://www.magnaflow.com/07techtips/faq/question20.aspe

Here is what is says. So I think the dealers always try to get you to buy thier parts. I paid $400 for a 40 series dual flowmaster. The dealer sales a flowmaster with a mopar name attached and want to charge in upwards of $850. So call another dealer or do some research. but this link actually qoutes some laws and number to google. Hope this helps. I thought about the 60 series but the muffler shop i went to gave me a good price on the hushpower and the 60series on the site sounded a bit HONDA ish. :P

    :surprise: :D getem
    MagnaFlow's Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Will it void my factory warranty?

Answer: NO. It's also illegal for a dealer to deny you the OE warranty because you have changed the exhaust system. This is an often asked question. But you will need to be armed with some basic information.

Under the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act of 1975, 15 USC, 2302 and Clean Air Act 42 of USA code 7541, you have rights.

    This legislation basically states that:

In order for a dealer/manufacturer to deny a warranty on a claimed part, they must PROVE that the part YOU installed/had installed DIRECTLY caused the failure of the part on which you’re claiming the warranty.

What does this mean to you?
Let’s say you install a turbocharger to the engine. Could this void the transmission warranty? The axle warranty? The answer is “possibly,” as the increased stress to these components cause by the increased power output from the turbo could indeed cause your warranty to be denied.

What about a cat back exhaust system?
Since most high quality systems, at least those systems that are 50 state legal, are installed behind the catalytic converters, there should be no warranty concerns to other components, even emissions components. Most exhaust companies, including MagnaFlow, design their systems so that no modification is necessary to get the systems to fit. They will not trigger “check engine” lights unless there’s a leak in the system which almost always caused by an oversight during installation and they will not effect emissions. Remember: the engine creates the emissions, the exhaust system is the path from which they exit. A freer flowing exhaust will not do anything to inhibit emissions expulsion or to increase emissions output, all of which is controlled by engine management and the catalytic converter(s).

Any properly engineered exhaust system will not cause any failures of any other parts of the engine, suspension, chassis, transmission, electrical system, etc.

Of course, there’s a great deal to be said for the importance of having a qualified installer work on your vehicle. While MagnaFlow goes to great lengths to provide ample clearance of fuel lines, electric lines, brake lines, etc., like any part you’d install, if care is not exercised, there could be interference with equipment on the vehicle. That’s why we recommend using a MagnaFlow “Preferred” dealer to do your installation, unless you have at least some basic knowledge of working on vehicles.

In any case, the most important thing you need to know is that you need to be armed with this information. In many cases, dealers are just plain timid in doing repair work on vehicles that are even remotely different.

What to do if denied a warranty?
You MUST get the denial in writing and demand that they are very specific in why they’re denying the claim and in providing solid evidentiary proof in how the part you installed/had installed caused the failure for which they’re denying the warranty.

Next, contact the Regional Service Manager and of course, the manufacturer of your vehicle, mention the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act and document every word they say and retain copies of all paperwork. The problem is usually corrected here, as manufacturers know the law, dealers are just being cautions. Of course, some dealers are better than others and we’ve all had bad experiences. Use the internet chat rooms to seek out owners of similar vehicles to share their dealer experiences…its’ a powerful tool.

In most cases, when they realize that you’ve done you’re homework, the dealer and manufacturer will realize that they’re obligated to comply with the law.

YEAH...we ordered ours on 17 MAR 07....if you do the math that is 15 weeks and 1 day as of today!!! We have a VIN, they said that its was going to be shipped on th 21st of JUn, but still waiting...I odrered this car while home on leave from Iraq, now am alomst ready to come home and wife still has no car... So much for 6 to 8 week build time from the lie the dealer told us how long it would take to be in when we ordered it.

As far as the rebate? I want more info on this. We ordered our STX in MAR and in APR I see there is a $500 rebate and now its gone, what gives, can we still get teh rebate? The dealer said no, and teh intrest rates have gon up in our 15 week wait! Very frustrating. Thanks
  • bigtsrbigtsr Member Posts: 149
To claify your posting, you cancelled your original order,
took one from inventory with etched glass option(more$$$),
    your trade was re-evaluated(more miles-wear & tear).
They gave you the 50.00 coupon, what did you call about, what was the email about, are you happy with the car overall and if you are why would you suggest some one buy Toyota.
Chatham must have other dealers or at least other area
dealers might have proven a better choice.
I have 10 Chrysler dealership within 20 minute drive of
home but I practice service dept. loyalty first, even if
I buy at one I always go back to the one that provides
    best service.
  • caliberchiccaliberchic Member Posts: 402
Geez! I really wonder why some take so much longer than others. I get that the more recent orders, like April/May have more of a delay but I also ordered in March, on the 23rd to be exact and we took delivery on May 19th!

I feel so bad for those who had to wait even longer than we did, I thought 9 weeks was too long.

I can relate to the problem with the interest rate too, our payment increased $50 per month because of that. We did get the rebate, I am sure you get it too.
  • moparfancanadamoparfancanada Member Posts: 18
What model did you order waorgany? I ordered the R/T that basically comes with only one engine type and transmission choice. What I suspect Chrysler is doing, is to only begin building certain models once orders reach a certain level, then they commence production of that particular model.
They order the engines and trannies that come in and go directly onto the line yadda yadda yadda. It's that "just in time" production method that they all use now.

The dealer basically has their hands tied. They are not the ones building the cars, BUT!!!, they are the ones selling them. I absolutely hate being told by the dealer that " Oh, it's being built this week or next", then to go back after that time and be told it was not built. Very frustrating.

Here's the kicker! Once it is finally built, then its gotta get on a train from Chicago to Detroit. Then across the border to Windsor, onto another train to Montreal, where God knows how long it will sit in a yard until it gets onto a motor transport for the final trip to Ottawa. The dealer says that could take another 2 weeks. Beauty!

Next time, I will buy from the lot. Screw this.

A friend of mine ordered a new Pontiac Solstice when they came out and waited almost a year! Then he received in January. So it sat in his garage until spring. So GM ain't any better.

Thats what we get when we order a new product. I wonder why customer satisfaction is low.

    Well that's my rant. :-)

Interesting but I live in Canada so the US laws don't apply. Also your post even says that it's possible for aftermarket parts to void a warranty. And just because it's on the aftermarket manufacturers website doesn't mean it's accurate.

"What does this mean to you?
Let’s say you install a turbocharger to the engine. Could this void the transmission warranty? The axle warranty? The answer is “possibly,” as the increased stress to these components cause by the increased power output from the turbo could indeed cause your warranty to be denied."

My parents had the same problem when they ordered their new Toyota Corolia (when it was last redisigned, 2003 I think?) they ended up waiting over 6 months to get it.

This always happens with cars in their 1st Model Year or in the 1st Year of a Major Redesign - especially if it is popular. And from what I've been reading the Caliber is quite popular & Dodge can't keep up to demand - even with 4 shifts.

My spouse has a 2006 Matrix TRD, and I'm waiting for my Caliber R/T. I like the Matrix for the unrestricted views, although I do sit a bit higher in the saddle being 6'6". I like the sitting position in the Matrix. I've only test drove the Caliber, but after a 5 minute drive, I was sold and ordered a loaded R/T Caliber. The Caliber, in my opinion, looks more masculine than the Matrix. The fit and finish on the Matrix is typical Toyota quality, not bad at all. I'm more of a long term kinda guy. First impressions are ok, but where will you be in 4 years from now.

As for the Vibe, its just a Matrix with the added on, typical GM, plastic. I don't know who the head designer is at GM, but I wish they would take away the plastic body cladding from him.

Either way, I dont think you can go very wrong with either the Matrix or Caliber. Good luck
  • fmfpjfmfpj Member Posts: 12
yea but if i wanted a turbo, i would have bought a SRT. we are talking mufflers. Sorry to hear that you live in a country that does not follow the same laws.
  • neely2005neely2005 Member Posts: 70
Don't get me wrong there might be similar laws in Canada (or better or worse or different laws) but I'm not familar with them. I'm just going by what my dealer has told me in the past. Who knows maybe the dealer is wrong too?
  • bolshoimacbolshoimac Member Posts: 3
I ordered an R/T on 8 May. I'm in the military overseas and they told me that they would shoot for a delivery date of 7 Aug (basically, 90 days). I got an original build week of 22 June, however, I just found out last week that the build week was changed to 7 July. The note in the system indicated that the factory was closed for two weeks, resulting in the delay on the build. No explanation however of why the factory was closing. And of course, since I'm in Germany, I've got to wait for the vehicle to make the boat ride over and then get transported down from the port... :(

Haven't heard much on the forum here from R/T owners. I would be interested in feedback on the all-wheel drive, power, and transmission. I basically am buying the R/T site unseen. The only car they had here to test drive was an SE (The auto sales folks here have a pretty limited selection of cars in stock.)

Thanks to everyone for their inputs on the board. It's helping me pass the time while I wait.

I think there is little or no feedback from R/T owners because we are all waiting for our cars.
I don't know how the assy.line works but maybe the have to build one type at a time and all of us will gt our R/T s at around the same time.
