The tail lights on the 60 Meteor are plain ugly.

They remind me of the substitute taillights folks often insert into the openings where there used to be
a red lense. The replacement contains round, chrome outlined lights for stop, run, backup...

The name "Ford" does not appear anywhere on that car.

True, but a rose by any name smells just as sweet.

The Meteor - crazy to think that there was so much surplus money that making a barely-differentiated model to pander to a niche audience actually seemed sensible.

At far left is something even less common - above the leather case on the back of the boy's bike, a (British) Ford Thames, appears to be a "Trader" van.

Car at far right at Continental Motor Sales appears to be an Austin A40 Somerset.

And appropriate for the setting, beside the Italian restaurant appears to be a Fiat 600.

I miss seeing this style of neon sign that I recall as a kid. This one is in the same group of pics and although the cars are not worthy of mention, take a close look at the Italian restaurant sign on the left. Creative!

Today's look at 1961 Montreal and Decarie Blvd is of Ben Cummings Buick-Vauxhall. A bit odd in that the facility looks decidedly downmarket for a Buick dealer. Two shots of their new-car facility plus a look at their used car lot, all of which expand greatly. Looks like the back row of the used lot was employed for storage of new Vauxhall inventory. More of the large neon signs in this set too.

A 60 Ford (or meteor) hiding behind the rambler wagon. And a couple more bedfords.

First pic, Rambler doesn't appear to be a wagon, 60 Ford behind it appears to be a normal Ford.

Second pic, PA Cresta/Velox pulling out of the garage.

Third pic, far right, appears to be a couple more PA Cresta/Velox, very collectible cars back in Blighty.

    Third pic: 58 Ford wagon

In the 3rd pic there is what must have been pretty uncommon even for the times, a '56 Ford Sedan Delivery at the curb on the right of the pic.

Today we are looking at 2 shots of the same intersection, Decarie at Vezina, looking in different directions. Finally another French car! A few other interesting things if you look closely. Expands greatly.

The Jag is a MKII sed...er.. saloon. The pickup is a Dodge, behind it a two-tone Ford Zephyr, rrarly seen in the US but apparently popular in CDN.

The pickup isn’t a Dodge, but it isn’t a Ford either (in name at least). I was hoping someone would pickup (ahem) on that - note the Mercury lettering across the grille. Mercury branded pickups were sold up here until 1968.

Also, I think the Jag is a MKI. Note the thicker B pillar.

The Jag looked newer than anything else but I looked at a bunch of pics and it looks like the Mk2s all had chromed B-posts and the pictured car clearly does not...yup it's a Mk1.

Today's shot of 1961 Montreal ends the week with a good look at Norvik Motors, a used car lot on Decarie Blvd that had a large percentage of imports on the lot, with a bit of Garland Motor Sales visible on the left. As usual, rt-click/view image will expand this greatly.

Nice point of comparison between the original 57 Cresta / Velox and the later 59 facelift (the one on the left is the later one)
Also a Fiat 600 Multipla with side door open in the area behind the overhead sign

Car two to the left of the leftmost Cresta/Velox maybe a Hillman Californian? And a Dauphine between them.

A Citroen Mehari - they made these for a good while, and I think there was a facelift with square headlights somewhere along the road but we never got the Mehari in Britain so I have only seen them abroad really.
  • ab348ab348 Member Posts: 19,071
I remember reading a road test of the Mehari in one of the car magazines around 1970 or 71. The reviewer described driving it on the freeway and how the top (fastened with bungee cords) went "fwap-fwap-fwap" at highway speeds. From what I gather it was basically a Dyane (which was based off the 2CV) with a plastic dune buggy body. They were popular as beach cars in the South of France.

Yup, basically it had the same relationship to the 2CV as the Thing had to the Beetle.

Today's Montreal 1961 pic is nothing too special except for the period street scene with the businesses along this section, and something you now usually find only in a museum.

than those w an Iso badge).
