The Aztek comment was harsh. I don't think it looks that bad. I'm with Andre on this one. (did I just say that? :P )

Lord help us, THAT thing is a BMW?! Now I never was one to put BMW up on a pedestal for their styling, especially the older ones, but I would've given them more credit than that! :P
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
Yep that is a BMW, sort of. It's a mid 1960s BMW Glas
    3000
. When BMW bought Glas, previously known mostly for the Goggomobi, in late 1966 they inherited an arrangment with the design house of Pietro Frua, who styled cars for Fiat, Maserati, Monteverdi and others.

Frua styled some of my favorite Maseratis fo the 60s including the Mistral and the Quattroporte.

As you can see there are many similarities between the B-G
3000 and the 1963 version of the Quattroporte>

    image

They must have been having an off day when the 3000 was designed.

The factory for Automobile Werke-Glas was located in Dingolfen and many BMWs are still made at that same plant today.

The interior of the car looks pretty fabulous in this shot>

    image

The car was V8 powered, I assume it was essentially the same V8 that powered the fabulous 507.

'58 Apache Cameo. Not nearly as useful as the wideside bed that debuted that year.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
Yeah, it's a '58 Cameo and isn't that the wideside bed (AKA Fleetside)?

    Here's a nice two-fer from the same era.>

Naah, the wideside bed had a bulge along the side to blend into the round tail light.

the one in the back looks like a 1959ish benz 190SL. The front one resembles a Jag 9at least the grill does), so I am going to guess some kind of Daimler.

    Nuh-uh, that's a BMW 502 from the early 50's.
The roadster is indeed a 190SL, and the red and white squarish thing in the background is a a VW Transporter

Hey guys, just came across this amazing thread...where have I been all these years? Many years on Edmunds, and I never saw this one...weeeellll...I guess I have some viewing to do.

Couple of questions....if someone would be so kind to answer.

    1. Many of the pictures just show as a red X, and others are obvious links (although, not apparently web links) but show xxx.jpg and 0 size, and don't open. Example post 2492 link title

    2. Would you welcome a newbie (to this group)?

    3. How do I post a picture?

    4. Any other current guidelines to follow? (no prototypes, post ww2, what else?

Thanks!, and I hope to able to guess one once in awhile!

    Jeff

I might even have a few for you guys to guess.
  • gsemikegsemike Member Posts: 2,438
No one off models. Anyhthing else is fair game although I'm very bad a recognizing anything before the 60s.

To post a pic, it needs to have a url from something like Photobucket or Google Images. Insert the url into the post and then highlight it and click the IMG button.

My one pointer that hasn't been embraced would be for posts to have more descriptive titles. When something goes up with the title ??, it's sometimes hard to follow who is responding to what.

If you've put the pics online, they are fine.

Newbies are entirely welcome, the more the merrier. Rules are per my original post when the topic was started Click
If there's strong sentiment to change the ground rules we'll do it. this is a democracy, not an autocracy. ;)

FWIW I find it much easier to capture photos from around the web by using a Firefox browser than by using IE.

I hope this is the way to show a picture...

Anyway, this is a strange vehicle, in that it is built in a Country that is not expected.

Your picture shows up fine, Is that a Hindustan Ambassador from India. (AKA Morris Oxford)?

  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
Jeff you're right about the quad headlights being new in '58 but '58 'vettes had chromed stripes running over the trunk, like this>
    image

You're off by a year Juice but don't feel bad, I was told by the owner of a vintage Corvette that it's impossible to tell a '59 from a '60 if you don't know which colors were offered cuz other than colors the two years were identical.

The teal car is a 1960 model.

Sorry Andy...It is not a Hindustan (or Morris Oxford)or from India...

Country might be a big surprise, but among the experts here, my guess is this mystery won't last long. :)

    Hillman Minx ca. 1953?
  • jbolltjbollt Member Posts: 736
Fin..yes! Hillman Minx, but anyone know what country it was from? Hint: NOT Great Britain...
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,647
Some kind of branch plant in Australia or New Zealand maybe? South Africa? Commonwealth anyway, I assume.

Not sure on protocol here, as in: how long do the mysteries stay a mystery? But being "the new guy here" here goes:

The car is a Hillman Minx...made in Japan by the Isuzu company. AKA Isuzu PH10

After World War II Japanese manufacturers entered into agreements with car makers from several countries, including the Rootes Group from Britain. Beginning in 1953, Isuzu began making Minxes.

The car was powered by a 1265cc side-valve engine, producing (a whopping) 37.5hp, had a 4-speed column shift.

I think you can reveal it when you want. Rules here are pretty lax save for the no-prewar/no-one offs idea.

That kind of rings a bell...that Austin A50 (?) beside it was also made in Japan by someone, I believe.

    Nissan.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
    I don't think that's an Austin A50, I'm almost certain it's a Renault 4CV like this one:

    AFAIK never made in Japan.

#7678 is one of 21 Porsche 356Bs modified w lightweight bodywork and 4-cam Carrera engines
to race in the FIA GT class. They were known as
    Porsche Abarth Carrera GTLs.

    A few were steet driven.

Toyopet it is. After the Crown bombed in the US market, Toyota only sold Land Cruisers here for most of the '60s.
