I have a 2014 Subaru Outback 2.5 and want to tow an A-frame travel trailer that weighs 1900 lbs. which is well under the maximum suggested weight for this vehicle, however, my husband is feeling nervous about taxing the car with this much weight when driving up a mountain grade. Also, the trailer is wider than my car and I need extension side mirrors. Any opinions/comments. Thanks so much!

My brother had one for a year not long ago - they liked it but went bigger. Now they are downsizing again. Maybe. :)

Anyway, they towed it mostly with a '13 F-150, but sometimes with their '13 Odyssey.

The advantage of the pop-ups is that they don't have much windage. So, like smaller boats, they are easier to tow than boxy trailers.

Maximum towing is 2,700 so yeah, you have a good margin there. I don't tow so someone else can weigh in (@texases?), but the trick is to remember to count the stuff in the Subaru (including yourselves) as you add up the pounds, and don't forget the jugs of water and groceries.

I kind of understand where your hubby is coming from - towing can be hard on a vehicle and as you approach the weight limits, it seems that your margin of safety decreases. But I have trouble convincing people to do like we do and get a tent. :)

I would consider, in that case, adding a transmission oil cooler. In most states, you don't need a trailer brake until gross weight exceeds 3,000 lbs.

What about the side mirror extensions - does anyone know what my options are?

I'd check with some of the online camping stores and see what kind of options are available. Then maybe find something similar locally in case the installation is "tricky". But some just clip on to your existing mirrors.
