Rotors always replaced with pads?

I have a 2011 Nissan Rogue with 86,000 miles. I'm told my pads are at a 2.7 and I need new brakes. Two shops I've called tell me the rotors are replaced at the same time. Im looking at about $350 for the front and $300 for the rear. Do you agree rotor replacement is a given or am I being taken? I'm not experiencing any braking issues. Thanks

    Always? There will be exceptions so you can't really say always, but the incidence of replacement is higher than machining or leaving them alone depending on where you live and condition of the rotors. In the rust belt it is common to have corrosion issues in the cooling vanes of the rotor and that isn't serviceable. That means it is unwise to try and machine them regardless of their condition and so they routinely get replaced.

    I've heard that reusing the existing rotors with new pads often leads to irritating noise, at least while the new pads break (ha) in.

    The noise leads to customer complaints and call backs to the shop, which costs the shop time and money. So they just replace the rotors as a standard practice to avoid the call backs.

    Guess it depends if the rotors are warped or damaged. 86,000 miles is always different on a heavier vehicle like the Rogue compared with my Versa for example. I'd expect to have to replace front rotors before the rears, since the front brakes generate more of the stopping force than the rears.

    Thank you for your replies. They gave me the confidence to push for more info and to be allowed to inspect the rotors. They could have been machined but would have been at the minimum so I went with replacement.

    That's not a bad price either for all 4 pads/rotors.
