Brake light and turn signal issue

The left brake light and turn signal work when the ignition is in the accessory position, but when the engine is started they stop working. Turn off the engine and they work perfectly again. Could this be a relay issue?

I have found the cause of this problem which is apparently fairly common on Jeep Cherokees. It is actually the headlights being turned on that cause the lamp to fail. The driver side brake/turn signal socket is corroded inside, and after replacing that socket (which is very easy to do), the problem went away.

Good detective work. Yes, it's always good with lighting problems to start at the bulb end of things.
