2004 Expedition engine issues in 4WD

My son has a 2004 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer. He pulled over and switched to 4WD and said he got an electrical smoke smell, the engine started sounding like a tornado, and the steering got really hard to turn. He pulled off the highway and put in back into 2WD but the problems didn't stop until he hit a bump and all went back to normal. What part of the 4WD system could affect the steering? Is there something that uses the fan belt? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Did he put it in 4H or 4L?

If he was in 4L on a fairly dry road, he'd get all those symptoms.
