Stereo fried.

Look for some help on my 2010 Elantra Touring. The FM went out (static) about a month ago and yesterday driving down the road my FM was on and the whole screen when blank with the smell of burning plastic and smoke from the dash. It looks like the stereo fried. Anyone else have a problem like this? Also If I replace it with a used stereo does the dealer have to do anything to it in order for the car and stereo work together? Thanks

Sounds like there must have been a short somewhere that got too much voltage where it shouldn't have been. When you replace the unit, make sure that all the power connections are showing the right voltages and currents.
I suppose it's possible that there was an internal problem with the unit that caused it to fry, but you need to make sure the problem isn't elsewhere before you risk another radio.

I'm surprised a fuse didn't blow to protect it.
