2005 Dakota, drives in 4 wheel drive, but not in all wheel drive.

I was at a stop, when I started moving forward my transmission made a thunking noise and just quit. It wouldn't roll in any gear. Then I switched it to four-wheel drive, and it drove fine. I removed the transfer case and checked it out - and there seems to be nothing wrong with it. I get a grinding noise when I shift into park.

what could be the problem?

Sounds like something broke in your rear differential.
