Intermittent noise - 2002 Toyota Rav4

I have a 2002 RAV4 diesel it has developed a scraping noise just like a brake pad catching but since I have had new pads & discs it is not brakes. This noise can occur intermittently & also when the car is at rest it also has occurred with the ignition just switched on th the initial stage prior to engine ignition. It I'd driving me crazy, any help will be great.

    Seems to me that if this occurs with the car not moving and the engine not running that a simple run on the lift should be able to isolate it.

    Unfortunately as I explained it is intermittent and as yet because of that and the brevity of the noise isolating the source so far has impossible without a clue as where to look, ie. It could be any part that moves whilst the engine is not ruining.
