Yup. I checked vtec.net and here are the Motortrend awards to Honda...

*1994 Honda Accord - Import Car of the Year
*1988 Honda CRX Si - Import Car of the Year
*1984 Honda Civic CRX - Import Car of the Year
*1980 Honda Civic - Import Car of the Year

In different parts of the country they sell different octane ratings as "regular", "mid-grade" and "premium". In these parts I have never seen 86 - 87 is the minimum and is considered regular. Mid-grade ranges from 89 to 90. Premium would be considered 91 or higher - a very large chain sells 93 as its premium, but most are 91 or 92. There is a Shell station down the street that sells 100 octane "racing gas", also has several pumps with no ethanol, which I use to put in my boat, lawnmowers, etc.

I have an FX45 that calls for 91 or higher, and although I have never heard pinging, it has had noticeably less pep when I've tried 87, so I stick with 91. I would do the same if I were to buy an Si.

P.S. I agree that considering some of Motor Trends past picks, their Car of the Year award doesn't mean much. The worst that comes to mind is the Chevrolet Caprice, most of which were used as taxi's because most individuals had the good sense not to buy them.

    Guys, its octane NOT octave!!

Hell, I could only imagine what an English teacher would say if they read some of these posts, but that's not the point..... we all know what they are talking about, even if they spell it wrong. That's what adds to the hilarity! :P

Yep, you're correct. I failed to see that Motor Trend awarded a seperate Import COTY between '76 and '99. Doh!

And HEY, I actually had TWO of their Import COTY ('76 Celica Liftback and '84 Honda CRX) without even knowing it! Woo hoo! No wonder I felt a special little tingle everytime I drove those cars......

Planning on purchasing a black ex AT nav. soon.

What is best guess as to when more interior color options will be available? dunno if i can deal with the ivory...
  • strumeliastrumelia Member Posts: 48
I have a white '06 EX Coupe with Ivory interior.
I love it, but I did take a couple steps to help prevent dirt inside. I got the rubber floor mat set for winter use (very nice fit, with a lip all around to contain slush etc) and I am ordering a matching ovory sheepskin cover for the driver's seat and headrest- not only for luxury and winter warmth, but to prevent wear and grime buildup on the driver's seat.
I like the warm ivory look myself. Black feels too somber and depressing to me, and grey always seems cold.

ot the '06 Civic Coupe LX with A/T. Can't wait to pick it up.

Nearly impossible to get an EX and the only ones I found within 150km was a single neutron blue and a silver, which doesn't appeal to me. So I went down one trim and managed to find one in black (wanted that or gray). Got a decent price, considering they can barely keep them in stock selling them at MSRP. This was also my very first time talking price with a car salesman in person.

$500 under MSRP (this was a graduate discount) + Standard Delivery charge + 4 year honda plus + Security/License fee waived

Avoided all dealer installed options and other padding. The only thing on top of the car I have to pay for is my license plate and insurance (and of course sales tax). Some might say I could've done better, but I'm happy and don't feel ripped off in any way. So I guess that's what's most important.

midnightcowboy and fellow GSR owner: I 'm glad we are here for your amusement, but you don't have your facts straight. Muscle cars were not slow at all. Challengers and other Mopars with the 429 Hemi and 440 did the 1/4 mi. in the 12's! Others were in the low 13's. They were a little slow compared to todays cars with the same displacement, yes, but you 'd have to spend over $50K today to get that kind of acceleration today.

SPEED and other cable channels (TNT I think) does a lot of classic muscle car shows. They had my Nova 350SS on there a few years ago. They said in 1970 (mine was s '71, same car) car mags tested it and did 0-60 in 5.5sec (most SS cars then were 4-sp. manual). They tested the one on the show and it did 5.4s and 1/4 mi. was 13.7 I believe. The early '70's Novas (coupes) with a V8 were barely 3100lbs. The straight 6 (250ci) Novas 2dr were 2950lbs. Power to weight ratio is very important. They also had the Pontiac GTO and Camaro 427 on the another show and both were like 5.1 & 5.3sec (heavier than my Nova) 0-60. The '66 & '67 Corvette Stingrays were also very fast with the 427ci motor. Yes there were other "muscle cars" that were 7sec. cars but they weighed 4,000lbs. By today's standards their 5.7 to 7.0L engines were "slow". But you know, I officially raced an '05 S2000 last Semptember and it seemed slower than my '71 Nova. The S2K does 0-60 in ~5.4/5.5s and 13.5/13.7s (different mags I 've seen) in the 1/4 mi. Similar #s to a '70/71 Nova 350SS but you have to launch this little car at 6K RPM and probably burn a good portion of the clutch disc at the end of the 1/4 mi. run to achive those #s. You can't do that with a V8. If you launch at high RPMs the car will sit there for a while spinning the tires and then wheel hop for 50+ yards or so. They are so torquy that with a normal launch you get the car moving very quickly, unlike many sports cars today where you have to wind them up to high RPM's. Besides, a few simple bolt-on mods on those muscle cars and you easily got an extra 40-50hp out of them. To get those kind of gains on a Civic, Integra or S2000, you 'd have to supercharge or go turbo.

Of course the old muscle cars didn't handle or brake like today's cars but I 'd take one (in fair condition) any day over a Civic if they were practical and I had a short commute.

Strumelia: I was thinking about doing a similar thing with the driver's seat and definitely plan on getting winter/all season floor mats because the carpeting will definitely turn black like my beige interior of my '01 Civic. I have to learn from my previous mistakes, no? ;) So you definitely seem to have a handle on the interior.
What is this interior accent option I keep hearing about? Can you describe it for us? Did the dealer install it?

    Hi Harry,
I am about to order my driver's seat sheepskin cover from this site:
    http://www.rmsheepskin.com/
They sent me the samples already so I can pick the color. Narrowed it down to either Camel or Champagne. One thing you have to remember though is to order the side airbag adaptation from them- they make the one side edge attached just with some velcro instead of sewn on- so that it gets immediately blown aside when the airbag inflates.

Here is the site where I got my all-season floor mats:
    http://www.hondapartsdeals.com/index.php?cName=2006-civic-sedancoupe-2006-civic-interior-a- ccess
They also show a picture of the "interior accent trim" set on that page.
I didn't get that myself- looked too cold and macho-high-tech for me- give me cushy sheepskin instead!

Make sure you buy the genuine Honda all-season floor mats specially design to fit the new 06 Civic coupe, they got 2 holes at the back to fit the hooks installed on the floor of the driver seat.

Initially I bought those expensive after market all-season floor mats without 2 holes....the mat slowly "creep" forward & block the accelerator & brake/clutch pedals.

My 06 Civic Coupe EX 5 speed manual has black interior & the "interior accent trim" looks good with black interior...but I don't know if they look good with grey or other colors tho.
  • strumeliastrumelia Member Posts: 48
I got the floor mats from the site I mentioned above, and they are "official" Honda parts and do have the two holes. They fit perfectly and have the honda logo. I also got the trunk tray from them- which is wonderful! A perfect fit.
    strumelia
  • bigal3bigal3 Member Posts: 107
Glad u hv bought the rite floor mat.

The trunk tray is nice, but the raised logo & channels make it hard to keep the tray clean after you have dust or spilled powder/fluid on it. It is too big to take the whole tray out to water hose it. I still have to use a plastic box/container to put things for easy cleaning.
  • strumeliastrumelia Member Posts: 48
Have you actually used the Honda trunk tray? It's wonderfully flexible rubber and very lightweight, so it's very easy to just pull out and hose off and flex it right back in. It's a cinch, not like some heavy stiff awkward thing that is hard to wedge back in. You can even roll it up. I can pull it out, shake any grit out, and put it back in in about 90 seconds. It fits perfectly all around the edges of the trunk, and has a very high raised lip all around its edges to contain spills and dirt.
I like it because you can put stuff like windshield wiper fluid and beverages in your trunk and not worry about them leaking onto the trunk rug. Also if you haul bags of mulch or dirt the mess is neatly contained.
    strumelia
  • bigal3bigal3 Member Posts: 107
I have seen it, but I didn't buy it.

For me, I put clear plastic boxes in the trunk....1 to put car stuffs & 2 for holding shopping bags or beverages, etc.

The trunk tray look very nice, I am happy you bought it & find it very useful.

For me, those clear plastic boxes are strong & easier to clean....& I can see whats inside. I don't have to worry about accidentally punching holes in them (even if I did, they only cost a few dollars each & I simply throw away the one with holes in it).

They also help me to carry things from car to the house.

It is really great that Honda has all those gadgets to tailor fit each model.

It will be nice if the car dealers can offer similar discounts as those on-line mail orders.

CAN ANYONE HELP ME OUT AND SHARE WHAT IT COST TO INSURE A EX COUPE OR LX ?
  • corey415corey415 Member Posts: 49
You will probably get a more realistic figure if you get a quote online yourself. Almost all of the major insurance companies offer this.
  • strumeliastrumelia Member Posts: 48
How much you will pay for insurance depends on lots of variables- the state you live in, the area you live in, your age, your driving record, the coverage you want, your budget, etc, etc. It can vary a great deal. Go into any local insurance place and get a quote based on your circumstances, then get a couple other quotes and compare.

    Corey415,

Thanks for the pricing. Have you heard what the pricing for the HFP will be ?

I also wonder how fast aftermarket vendors will offer Cat-back exhausts, cold air intakes, headers, etc.

    Thanks,

The only prices for HFP I know of are for the body kit and rims. Aftermarket should respond very quickly with bolt-on parts, especially since Honda gave out 10-20 SIs to the tuner industry.

I see the courtesy light kit with the Blue LED lights, and I think its pretty nice. I have a EX w/ nav. Anyone have any experiance with these kits? I dont know how comfortable I am installing it myself. The kit is only $82.80 from collegehills, but what should I expect from getting it from dealers/installing it. The dealer who sold me my car says that they dont sell it or install it. Anyone know of anyone in Orange county (CA) who does? Thanks All!!
  • midnightcowboymidnightcowboy Member Posts: 1,978
The Pdf file on installationm looks pretty clear on how to install and what is In volved.

    http://www.collegehillshonda.com/instructions/8th_gen_civ_sedan/illumination.pdf

Depending on your skill and comfort level it looks realtively easy to install.

    Good Luck,

    MidCow
  • bigal3bigal3 Member Posts: 107
The courtesy light kit is pretty cool. But when I asked the Honda dealer to install in my Civic Coupe EX, they told me that I can either install the foglight or the courtesy light, but not both. They explained that the courtesy light in the Civic is controlled by a switch in the front panel, it is not turn on (& off) by opening (or closing) the doors.

You can look at the installation instruction & see if you are comfortable with installing the kit by yourself : http://collegehillshonda.com/instructions/8th_gen_civ_sedan/illumination.pdf
  • midnightcowboymidnightcowboy Member Posts: 1,978
    BigAl3,

I had actually posted the same installation PDF in messgage #245. If you open the .PDF and read it, look at item number 50. It shows the courtesy switch and two switch lids. There are actually postions for three switches. The courtesy light only uses one of the postions. The two switch lids are blanks switch positions; one of which could be used to install the fog lights in addition to the courtesy lights. You dealer gave you some bad installation inforamtion. Honda, does not normally preclude the installation of one option because another is already installed.

    Cheers,

    MidCow
  • bigal3bigal3 Member Posts: 107
    Midcow,

I really hope that you will do a little bit of research before making your comments.

In #244, albrew5 had already told us clearly that he has EX w/nav. For EX (& also LX), we have the controls for power mirrors right next to the switch (as shown in sketch 51)....& NOT 49 or 50.

"Item number 50 (or 49) - with positions for three switches" that midcow said is for DX model only (i.e. without controls for power mirrors).

If you had read the NOTE on courtesy light, http://www.collegehillshonda.com/civiccoupe/2006_electronics.htm

The NOTE on courtesy light had already CLEARLY written that :
NOTE: Cannot be installed together with fog lights on LX and EX trims.

albrew5 had already told us clearly that he has a EX. The NOTE also warned us that the courtesy light cannot be installed together with fog lights on LX & EX.

It is you (midcow) that gave us some bad installation information...& not the dealer.

The pricing looks very good indeed on Si. Now to see what the mass's and the dealers do to the price on the cars over the next 2 months. Wife keeps wondering when she's going to come home and a Si will be in the drive. And claiming its spot in the Honda food chain here. Effectivly baning her
    Accord from the garadge. :shades:

2006 Honda Coupe Si info is now posted on the honda web site:

    http://automobiles.honda.com/models/model_overview.asp?ModelName=Civic+Si&bhcp=1&BrowserDe- - tected=True

    Starting MSRP $19,990

    Cheers,

    MidCow

P.S.- Hopefully now the grumpy posters can do a 100% Octave(sic) research and add something to the threads rather than always trying to find fault with someone else. And yes it can be easily done: install both fog and courtesy lights. It all int the switches and just a little electrical ingenuity :)

Woo-HOO! Got my black leather steering wheel cover stitched on at the dealer's today! Very nice, and just in time for the cold weather.
They took off my full nose mask (no charge) at the same time- time to put it away for the winter.
First significant snow tonight- 3" coming- so I threw my nifty Honda car cover over my pristine baby for good measure.
My custom tailored ivory sheepskin driver's seat cover should arrive end of December. :D

Looks like the gas mileage estimates on the Si went up a little from what I'd seen before (23/32 on the Honda site).
  • strumeliastrumelia Member Posts: 48
Well, to compare gas mileage in a way one can appreciate realistically:
The Si factsheet on the Honda website actually currently says it gets 23city/31highwy. It says the Civic Coupe gets 30city/40highway (for the automatic, which is what I have). They both have 13.2 gallon gas tanks.
So...the Coupe will get 7 more mpg city and 9 more mog highway than the Si. Multiply that by a 13.2 gallon tank of gas, and that means:
The coupe will drive an extra 92.4 miles on a tank of gas than the Si in city driving, and an extra 118.8 miles(!) more than the Si on a tank of gas in higway driving. :surprise: Averaging city&highway, the Coupe gets about 105.6 miles more on a tank of gas than the Si. That's a LOT of extra miles to be able to go every time you fill up! You get over a 100 miles more in every tank of gas.
And of course, the fact sheets also mention again that the Coupe takes regular gas, and the Si should have premium gas.

I'm sure folks love their Si's, but I'm glad to have gotten my gas and money saving Coupe, for sure! :shades:
    strumelia
  • jjx456jjx456 Member Posts: 41
You're right about the fact sheet figures. But, under a photo of the fuel filler door on the exterior gallery it says 23/32, "The powerful, 197-horsepower 2.0-liter engine achieves 23 city/32 hwy mpg*
*Based on 2006 EPA mileage estimates. Use for comparison purposes only. Actual mileage may vary"
  • bigal3bigal3 Member Posts: 107
    (1) The "grumpy posters" did not determine that SI requires PREMIUM UNLEADED & EX can use REGULAR UNLEADED...Honda had spent millions of dollars on reseach and their ENGINEERS came out with the conclusion.

    (2) The dealer did not write :
NOTE: Fog Lights and the accessory courtesy light cannot be installed together on the LX and EX Coupe.
.....the warning note was written by http://collegehillshonda.com/civiccoupe/2006_electronics.htm (i.e. people who is selling the fog lights & courtesy light).

If you want to pretend that you know more than Honda or collegehillshonda.com , go ahead & ignore their warnings....& do whatever you want.

For us, we want to follow the manufacturers' instructions.....please do not point us to the WRONG DIRECTION.
  • bigal3bigal3 Member Posts: 107
P.S. (1) Using "regular" when Honda had specified "premium" for SI.....& (2)ignore warning notes & not following installation instructions...., etc. may be "hazardous" to your new car's warranty. Please consult Honda before making those modifications.
  • bigal3bigal3 Member Posts: 107
mmmmm....I agree with you....& don't forget about the savings on the insurance premuim.

I checked with Allstate today on ins for Civic EX Coupe and SI

Im 45, wife is 49. I would be prim. drive. We have spotless records and a Accord and Ranger with them already. $500.00 deducts w/uninsured motorist. we get all the discounts. Oklahoma, 40 miles south of Tulsa.

    SI w/Navi $575.00 per 6 months
    EX Coupe w/Navi $530.00 per 6 months
    Current
05 Accord EX Sedan $450.00 per 6 months
00 Ranger $331.00 per six months

These prices will drop a bit when i meet with our agen face to face. I was amazed the Civics cost more to ins. than the Accord. SI I can sort of understand. The EX coupe I dont. Given that Ins. companys are basicly political and $$$$$ terrorist. I basicly have little to no use for them.
  • JBaumgartJBaumgart Member Posts: 890
The difference between Civics and Accords is due to their difference in accident rates. Accord buyers tend to be older and more family oriented; Civics are driven by younger people who have more accidents - relatively speaking. The only thing that surprises me is that the Si is only $90 a year more than the EX coupe. You would think it would be more, given the Si's history of being modded and "raced" by male youths.
  • strumeliastrumelia Member Posts: 48
Well you are comparing a Coupe 2-door to a 4-door Accord sedan. That's comparing apples to oranges. More accurate would be to compare a Civic 4-door to an Accord 4-door.
    strumelia
  • bigal3bigal3 Member Posts: 107
Since PSY (& his wife) (1) currently own a 4 door Accord sedan + a Ranger, (2) they are over 45 (& 49) years old (3) with "spotless driving records", Allstate may assess their car insurance risk on the SI quite different from ours.

With the latest news on Honda Civic http://www.autonet.ca/Insurance/Story.cfm?Story=/Insurance/2005/11/30/1330673.html
It is also important to know the type & amount of coverage (e.g. amount of coverage on comprehensive & stolen vehicle)it is based on.
  • kronogoosekronogoose Member Posts: 116
Certainly, Si buyers have different priorities from EX buyers. The Si is a compelling choice to me because it offers higher performance with reasonable MPG, especially compared with other small, "high-performance" cars on my list like the WRX or even the Legacy GT. (I know, it is comparing apples to oranges for most, but these cars occupy spots on my wishlist.)

Anyone heard the rumor about the Si sedan? If it's true, that will be on my wishlist, too.

And psy: Insurance is that necessary (if not state-mandated) evil that I like to compare to a parachute. It's one of those things you'll want to have before you actually need it.

    Thanks,

    - Greg
  • aaykayaaykay Member Posts: 539
Coincidentally, the WRX wagon and the Civic EX sedan occupies spots on my wishlist, even though they fall into different categories and are priced very differently. Leaning towards the WRX wagon as of now.
