Sure, Richard. Explorer has only 118,000 and they had it priced at $4,800.

Damn, that sounds like the one that had an over allowance on it that was originally titled in NC just a week or two ago that was traded in on a black something or other. :)

You won't believe this. They're asking $9,998 for my over allowance Explorer. Fat chance. I laughed MAO when I saw it.

To Makola: 100,000 miles less than your trade for only $3K? You did great! That Explorer will give you another 100K miles easy. They are great cars. Congratulations.

Unbelievable! You should go in there and ask them why they only gave you $6000!

I guess they have to try. Wouldn't it be something if it actually sold at that price? Maybe to someone who doesn't go on Sales Stories.

mako....great job on the Explorer. jipster, richard and I spend more time researching colors than you did picking and buying a vehicle.

Farmer....great to see you back. Don't be a stranger.

Surprisingly, I haven't had a speeding ticket in about 10 years. Not that I don't speed, and not that I don't drive cars that are speeding ticket magnets. Must be karma or something. I don't even have an Escort radar detector.

But, I remember the last ticket I had (80 MPH in a 55 MPH), I went to court (by myself) to fight it. First time, after waiting 3 hours in the peanut gallery before they called my name, the ticket issuing officer didn't show up. Magistrate issued an automatic continuance. I found this a bunch of BS given the fact that if I hadn't showed up (or sent in a check), an arrest warrant would have been issued.

Three weeks later I'm scheduled in court again. Again, 3 hours pass before my name is called. I look around. No officer (who was a real arrogant, pretentious, PITA snot nosed kid to begin with) to be seen. Case dismissed.

Bottom line, I figure it cost me two 1/2 days of work. Depending on what you think that time is worth, and how flexible you are to take that time off, it's kind of a coin toss whether it's worth it or not. Plus, I don't know if I would have had the same outcome if the cop showed up. He said he had radar (not laser, but radar) and clocked me that way. My radar detector didn't go off. And, the officer wouldn't let me actually see his radar reading. So, who knows how the court would have viewed that (especially since they look down on radar detectors, which are LEGAL in OH)?

    "...How's your son's car doing.."

First, thanks to all for the welcome back, that's very nice of you all.

Second, Jipster asked about my son's car which I was asking questions about on another board. It's a sad story with a happy ending I hope.

My younger son bought my 97 Cirrus from me about a year ago and it had been running well. Since he's out of work I thought I'd save him a few bucks by changing his oil for him. A few week later he was driving home and noticed the oil light was on. For some reason known only to him he figured the light ment he should check his oil when he got home and drove it the last few miles. When I last posted about this the engine was now making noises and I feared the worst. Well, the worst came in the form of loud banging bearing noises and we sent by beloved Cirrus to the crusher two days ago.

The real sad part was that the oil failure was my fault. I did the oil change without checking to see that the old gasket was still on the old filter and I cause a classic double gasket failure. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I felt so bad that I offered to give my son what he had paid me for the car in the first place towards another car. This turned out to be the happy ending.

I was at my local garage the next day and just happened to see a 1993 Caddy Deville for sale. It belonged to one of the mechanics and had only 80K miles on it. he was asking $1500 and settled for $1200. My son got almost $350 for his at the junkyard so the total cost was under $900. As a bonus the almost new tires from his Cirrus fit my van so I saved a few bucks putting new shoes on that one.

Kind of a happy ending, don't you think? (And a car buying story to boot). ;)

"...Tell me about pumpkins this year..."

Pumpkin production and availability is a local thing. They are heavy and don't ship well so if your local farms had a bad year the pumpkins shipped in will be pricey. In my area it was not a real good year because of lack of rain but that only affects upstate NY.

To keep it on topic: NY police have to patrol bridges every year because of the number of pumpkins which throw themselves on to passing cars. They suspect rouge windshield replacement shop owners. :P

OK, that sales tale just saved you a ton of dues increases.

As for what you heard from that guy, well, you have to take what he says with a grain of salt. It’s not always the way he presents it. That book of his is out of date. I think you were here when I got the Genny in March of ’09. Ask him how many cars he’s bought in the last 5 years and that will prove my point.

No, the correct answer is 165 degrees for everyone involved in the discussion except for Richard. Richard is still arguing the appropriate phrasing of the question with teacher, Tidester as to how to accurately describe your turn. I can tell you right now that Richard is going to suggest that the language used was way too vague. :confuse: It might help if we knew the angle of the sun and the length of the cast shadow made by the "Z" as well as what kind of watch you were wearing when you made the sale. ;)

Richard - I'll have to dig it out and scan it in just for you, but all of this reminds me of a cartoon from the New Yorker that a friend of mine clipped ages ago. It was shortly after I had changed my major to English Lit from whatever it had been previously. She wrote, "Bronson's job after graduation on it." The cartoon shows a cop pulling over a delivery van. The van has "Me and Wallys Produce" written on it, and the cop is saying, "I'm giving you a ticket for reckless grammar and driving without an apostrophe."

Come to think of it, that's the perfect joke for Richard because it combines both vehicles AND grammar!

LOL Purrrfect one for Richard. It is amazing how many people who are in a particular business don't spell their own business correctly. The other day, I saw a "stationary store" and I saw a big trailer in a new survery that said "Houses For Sail". At least my new $15 Rolex says "Rolex" some of the Rolex's in China said "Roleks"

My watch is keeping perfect time after 3 weeks, but someone noticed the 6 at the bottom is actually upside down It is a Roman Numeral six and on a normal watch it would be written VI but it appears as I^, so is upside down...but not too many people catch that.

Easy fix. Flop it around on your wrist and it reads correctly. Don’t ask about all the other numbers. You only mentioned the VI, so that’s all you should be concerned about with your fake Rolex (and of course the angle that the hands produce). :surprise:

Well "stationary store" was right since, I presume, it was not moving.

A lot of businesses do "misspell" their names for business on purpose. I once interviewed for a job at a company that was named "Fisher" something or another only "Fisher" was spelled strangely. During the interview they mentioned the odd spelling of the name and how they thinned the possible candidates by eliminating those who corrected the spelling of their name on their cover letter.

But then wouldn't the VI appear where the XII should be?

C'mon 'snake', of course it would and that's why I said, "Don’t ask about all the other numbers. You only mentioned the VI...".

I was only trying to get the Roman Numeral that he was concerned about to appear the way he wanted to see it. What 'driver' needs is a digital watch but then he might put that on upside down and the 2's will look like 5's and vice versa. He'll have no problems with 8's, I don't think.

Not really. A compass would do it but that is for the common folk. You and I have an advantage. Didn’t you say your new beauty has a Nav system? I’m sure you can select a screen where the satellite pick up will tell you where you are to the exact degree (based on the accuracy of both the satellite and your Nav system). That’s far better than using an ordinary compass that has been known to get Boy Scouts and wanna-be boaters lost.

Start playing with that thing, you’ll like it. ;)

Since we are running a bit shy of sales stories today, I thought that perhaps I would add a measure of levity to our family thread. This morning, I drove 60 miles to keep an appointment with the urologist that I have used for 40 years. He is an excellent doctor and surgeon who has performed three kidney stone procedures on me over the years. It was time for my annual prostate and hernia examinations.

After the usual greetings, he asked me to drop my shorts for the frontal hernia exam. As he bent down, he noticed that his left shoe was untied. While he adjusted the shoe strings, I was just staring up at the light fixture. When he raised his head to begin the examination, his head hit me in the wrong place. I let out a shout which contained an inappropriate word, and fell back over the examination table. The table slid against the wall with a bang. His nurse (female!) entered the room to inquire as to whether the doctor needed assistance. My poor doctor, red as a beet, was trying to help me up from the table. I was frantically trying to pull up my shorts in front of the female nurse. My doctor assured his nurse that everything was under control. She couldn't exit fast enough---in my opinion. The doctor couldn't apologize enough. I kept telling him not to worry about it.

The doctor left the room briefly and returned with a Coke. He told me to take ten minutes, enjoy the Coke, and just rest a bit. Later, he returned to complete both exams. When I turned around for the prostate exam, I said, "Check both of your shoes before we begin." It cracked him up. When all was done, we both had a good belly laugh about the experience. I did make one request. Since I taught both of his sons back in the '70's, I requested that he not tell them what happened. He agreed. The best thing about the experience was that both tests were fine. The next best thing was that there was no charge for this visit.

When I walked out into the lobby, my wife asked, "How did it go?" I replied, "You didn't hear?"

To Jmonroe: Excellent idea. I totally agree.

To Fezo: How's that? I couldn't live through another 100 posts on that topic. (Grin)

Yes, there was a PSA test. I'll have those results in a day or two. Though the physical exam may be more important, both are really vital. I don't want to preach, but we all remember Mack and what happened. These tests are so important. I want all of our male posters to take care of themselves. If you're over 40, HAVE THE TESTS. Don't panic if your PSA level is high. A round of antibiotics may bring it back to a normal range. That has happened to me twice.

This is what happened to a lady who was charged for damage when she was returning her leased car.

    By Kathy Tomlinson, CBC News
A Toyota customer from North Vancouver believes she was deceived by a large car dealership after repairs she paid for on a leased vehicle were not done as originally promised.

"They told me something that was not true," said Shirley Sidey. "I caught them red-handed."

When Sidey returned her Highlander to Jim Pattison North Shore Toyota in August, she was charged $600, plus $72 tax, for a small dent on the bumper. She said the salesman told her the bumper had to be replaced before the vehicle could be put up for sale.

Sidey paid and went home, but she still had floor mats she had bought for the vehicle. She advertised them for sale on Craigslist and a man who just bought the same Highlander responded to her ad.

    Previous and new customers meet
"Serendipity. Karma. Fate. It was meant to be," said Sidey. "This guy came in my driveway — he drove up and there was my car."

Sidey said she was shocked to find the dealership had sold the car to the new owner "as is, without doing the bumper repair she had paid for.

Jim Pattison North Shore Toyota charged Shirley Sidney $672 for a small dent on the bumper of her leased vehicle when she returned it, but sold the vehicle without doing the repair.
"I came out on the driveway and walked around the car — and there was the old bumper still on the car," said Sidey. "I asked him if he knew anything about it — he said 'No.' I said, 'Did they tell you [that] you were going to get a new bumper?' — and he said 'No.'

"He didn't even notice the bumper. I said, 'Oh my God, there's that same dent!' and he said, 'What dent?'"

Sidey said she called the Pattison dealership immediately and spoke to the salesman who had charged her $600 for a new bumper.

"I asked him, 'Did you put a new bumper on that car?' He told me there was a new bumper on that car. I said, 'Are you sure? Are you absolutely sure that there's a new bumper on that car?' and he said, 'I am absolutely sure that there is a new bumper on that car,'" said Sidey.

'They went on the offensive and put me on the defensive'
—Shirley Sidey, Pattison North Shore Toyota customer"I was angry — I was furious."

Sidey complained to the general manager and asked for her money back. She said he told her the dealership had every intention of replacing the bumper, even though the new owner knew nothing about that.

"They said they were waiting for the new owner to come in to get some other things done on the vehicle," she said.

Sidey said he also indicated she was fortunate they didn't charge her more — for other needed repairs.

"They went on the offensive and put me on the defensive," said Sidey. "They told me there was a whole bunch of other things wrong with the car, but they were not going to charge me for all those things," said Sidey.

Sidey did not understand how that could be the case because the vehicle had been fully serviced at the same dealership in August.

"They were trying to bully me into keeping me quiet by saying I was lucky and I was getting away with all this stuff," she said.

The article said there is a lot more of this going on lately, and if she presses charges, the government might charge the dealer. Even though few of us lease cars, it doesn't give me confidence in dealing with most car dealers.

That is hilarious. Some comical things can happen when you visit the doctor. Several years ago my doctor was giving me a shot for something and sent his nurse in to administer the shot, in the hip no less.

She told me to drop my pants so I undid my belt and unzipped with the intent of lowering my pants just enough for the shot. I was wearing dress slacks and the second I unzipped, my darn pants hit the floor with the speed of light The nurse started laughing and couldn't stop and we both had a good laugh, but boy was my face red !!

driver...thanks for the news link. I've only leased a car once. Won't do it again because if issues like the one in the story (among many others). I think some brands/dealerships are better than others in this regard. Your beloved BMW being one of the better ones as they offer great residuals and seem to be very forgiving when it comes to what most would consider normal wear and tear, from what I've heard from others who've leased them.

Obvious Toyota isn't in that category. You'd think with all the trouble they've been in over the past couple of years, the millions in fines they've had to pay, they might be looking for more positive, and honest dealings with their customers. Or maybe, they just haven't learned a lesson yet.

I agree, I think BMW relies so much on leasing, they are less prone to mess around with it. They know, a good percentage of their cars are sold as leasess, and those people come back, and jump into a new one. What a great business, when it is working right.

This Toyota dealer was just taking advantage of a buyer...it is real short term thinking. Not a way to build a business. Probably the weak sales lately made them a little desperate.

"She wanted to turn the car in. She is responsible for paying for any damage," said Harbottle. "Whether we decide to fix it or not, or sell it as is, that is up to us."

I hope they nail these bozos to the wall!

Your story reminded me of a friend who used a very similar method to get his wife out of a speeding ticket. He actually found a tire shop that put smaller tires on his wife's car. She then took it to the dealer who verified the speedometer was miscalibrated, and then recalibrated it, and signed the appropriate documentation. Their attorney brought that to a judge who dismissed the ticket. They then went back to the tire shop and swapped out the tires for their originals, but they never got the speedometer recalibrated. He said he spent like $400 for this, but he figures what he saved on the insurance not increasing made that a bargain. Seemed like a lot of work, plus now his speedometer is miscalibrated. Assuming he knows what to add or subtract to it, he'd be OK.

Of course, this guy was the cheapest man alive. Brought bag lunches along when going to lunch with colleagues and had the nerve to ask for water from the establishment. There's thrifty and there's cheap. He was sometime thrifty but mostly cheap ;-)

    >If you're over 40,

I'd recommend an occasional check earlier. Some younger men get surprises.
With viruses clearly being linked to HPV and cervix cancer, men should be more aggressive in their personal care.

    >Though the physical exam may be more important,

There are many cases where the digital exam shows nothing. Any higher level than the previous test is a cause for concern even while it's under 5. IIRC 3 consecutive up-trending tests (e.g., 6 months apart) while still below 5 are indication of existing cancer in 1/3 of men. And you can have PSA tests more frequently if you have a concern. A local lab advertises that you can have tests at your own expense without an order from a doctor.

Take care of yourself and don't procrastinate. Malignancy detected early is highly curable.

A visit to the urologist's office doesn't have to be a boring experience; Richard's trip proves that.

Of course he can share the story but only if he want's to.

When I was in the 4th grade, a kid in my class never made it back from Christmas Vacation. Yes, that's what we called "Winter Break" back then.

He seemed healthy but he collapsed at home and never made it out of the hospital.

I still drive by his house when I'm in my hometown and think of that long ago day and his empty seat which happened to be right in front of mine.
