There is another reason I'm glad you posted that.
A few years ago, a disgruntled employee killed 9 people at a local beer warehouse.
One of my BIL's, who is a real Alpha guy, had worked there up until a few months before, so he knew everyone involved.
He ended up going to 9 wakes an 9 funerals.
I remember him telling me that people he didn't really know, many high level union officials and politicians, would just come up to him hug him and cry their eyes out.
He said ' What could I do?, I just let them'.
Anyways, that was a lot of weight he took on, and it took it's toll on him.
He's been bouncing back, but last weekend, he was doing some things with college kids that were too young to do it and he was too old to do it with them.
I was kind of mad, but didn't say anything and just tried to not let things get too out of hand.
In the back of my mind, I knew there was a reason I kind of let things go to a point. I'm the eldest in the family group and get my say, but your link to that song made it clear, why I didn't say anything.
It's all good :shades:
The "command system" includes navigation, Bluetooth phone, Bluetooth music streaming, DVD movies, voice control and activation, etc. it also includes Music Register which takes information about the titles of each track on a CD and posts it on the screen along with a pocture of each album cover.
Very intricate system which is more advanced than Lexus's system, which surprised me. They've made significant changes and improvements to their systems.

Years ago, a Medal of Honor GI Joe series was released.
One of my neighbor's dad was THE "GI Joe'.
I have the one with his signature and a picture of him signing it.
It's just sitting on a shelf, but I feel like it should be somewhere more honorable.
What I did for my Dad's 85th birthday (almost 5 years ago) was to take all the medals he earned during WWII (Silver Star, Bronz Star, Purple Heart, and some commendation and service medals) and have them mounted in a glass and wood hanging display case and presented it to him. He was so honored by that he cried.
When he was awarded those medals, he was on a hospital recovering from his wounds. He told me the presentation display brought back some good, but mostly terrifying memories of the Battle of the Bulge.

Richard--
Maybe they should have just given you the Rand McNally Travel Atlas. :P Lord knows RM must be losing sales right and left as owners increasingly rely on either built-in, aftermarket nav units or downloadable maps from Google or mapquest.
I upgraded our Garmin unit this year and it runs circles around our unit from just three years ago; it has lifetime updates, a much bigger screen, is slimmer and costs the same or a little less than the three-year old unit. I even downloaded the voice of the British actor who plays Wallace from the Wallace and Grommit animated films, which is a hoot. He's periodically asks if I want to pull off for a "spot of tea" and to keep my eyes on the road. So far I don't use it enough for his infrequent prompts to get old and he's far preferable to the gal in our own unit who was always "recalculating".
Also, the landscape detail is far superior to the old unit and it splits the screen to include an image of the exit sign and exact lane the car should be in on pretty much every interchange I have encountered thus far on the interstate. This allows me to focus on more important tasks like text messaging and applying makeup while downing my sandwich and latte.

Mike it is a difficult thing to look up. But I found this quote about an E350;
Use the instrument cluster as intended. It is EXTREMELY accurate and the sump probe measures actual oil level at 1 millimeter increments. I can assure you that no dipstick can read at that level of accuracy...
I can't find more right now, but I think it is also displayed digitally, and that dipstick may just be for use by the mechanic.
Read the article I found so far;
How to check oil on MB E350
Please be sure enough postage is on the quarter to get it to Canada.

I have an onboard manual in the 535 too. That's what I was wondering, how come every one has the same inventions at the same time?
Check out oil indicator or oil check etc.
I don't want to lose a quarter!!!!!

*driver, tomorrow morning I will pull the manual out and read all the fine print about checking the oil level. If there is an instrument cluster readout for oil level, I will post my findings. But to be honest with you, I've owned many E350's (2008-2013) and have never been aware of anything like the BMW readout of an electronic dipstick. But just for you, I will take as long as it takes to find it, if it exists. I'll even call Gary (shop foreman at my dealership) to see if he knows anything about that readout.
I read the link you posted, but those E350's were early 2000's. They may have changed the rèadout capabilities on the newer models. But I will do everything I can to find one in the instrument cluster.

No need to spend too much time on it, I just thought it was something Mercedes would do. On the other hand, I think of Mercedes as being more classic....kind of old world charm, and they may think their customers would be offended by not offering a dipstick....lots of people here seem to be offended.
I did think they would offer both though. Just curious, and may need that quarter unless the stock market gets better.

*driver, it just has a dipstick - no way to check oil level internally. If oil level drops more than a quart, a message is displayed to check the oil level. The message comes up on the command system NAV display.

I am surprised but I think Mercedes wants to distinguish themselves from the others and retain the old fashioned charm.
When we bought our 1999 C Class MB we were given a 10 year old loaner to borrow until the car came in. I was shocked at how nice the steering was and at how solid the car was.......we had a 3 year old Volvo at the time. It was a stretch for us to get a Mercedes at that time, but once we test drove it, it was hard to settle for any other car.
One Audi explained the difference between an Audi, MB and BMW this way, and I would agree.
MB is primarily a luxury car, attention paid to the interior and luxury features like the interior.
BMW is more into engineering and steering, ride etc., built for cornering, engine performance etc.
Audi, is in the middle, nice interior, some engineering for engine and steering.
One thing about an MB, when those doors are closed it is like a huge vault - solid!

According to PC Magazine: "Apple today unveiled its next-generation smartphone, the 4-inch iPhone 5, which will include 4G LTE connectivity.
The iPhone 5 will come in black and white, and will start shipping on Sept. 21 in the U.S., Canada,
Overall, the iPhone 5 is made entirely of glass and aluminum, and is 20 percent lighter and 18 percent thinner than the iPhone 4S.
Apple also promised higher-performing Wi-Fi.
Apple said the iPhone 5's battery life will top that of the iPhone 4S with eight hours of talk time, 10 hours of video playback, 40 hours of music playback, eight hours of LTE browsing, and 225 hours of standby."

Ya think?
The older Honda coupes caught my eye recently and I was kind of surprised at how reasonable some of the Florida prices seemed compared to the armed-robbery on Hondas in my area. Are Hondas not as popular in some areas? As a stealth buyer I'd like to think there are places where you could swoop in and get a good deal on brands that would command premium prices elsewhere.

So, I think it is a draw
There are no implications on a bet. It's a black or white thing. The Mercedes has it, and you lost.
It's not a draw. Man up, and accept that you lost.
I'm not going to get into another silly argument with driver. Sorry guys, I know it's a trivial thing, but it's the principle of it.
if you want another business, go around this time of year and buy all the Subes you can find in Florida, and truck them up to New England and flip for a big profit.

Maybe not since it probably doesn't exist. I used to see ads like that locally about a year ago. This Florida scammer was persistent. This is a fraction of the several hundred times that ad appeared with slightly different price each time.

I am still in shock that the E wouldn't have a digital display to show oil levels. I even downloaded the owners manual for the 2013 E. They show every other display, including about 5 that show gas mieage, miles you have left, how much you use in eco mode....there are displays for lights, coolant, everything but exact amount of oil. I guess they have it covered because if the oil symbol comes up, you are on minimum and should look at it at your next gas stop.......a bit of a problem if you want MB oil and you are in the middle of Utah or something.
I give up, I'll have to figure out a way to get you the 25 cents...maybe you will be in Tampa Nov, Jan or Feb or if we are in the Miami area I'll try to deliver it, or leave it at the dealer for you.

I would be, but Mercedes Benz uses Mobil 1 - as the sticker under the hood says - "Mercedes Benz uses Mobil 1 in their engines."
According to my manual, they state that I should expect the engine to burn .6 qts. of oil in the first 1000 miles and to check oil level every time i stop for fuel during the first 2500 miles, or the predicted break-in period. Oil change is done once a year or every 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. The computer will notify me when an oil change is necessary if before 12,000 miles or 1 year. For some reason, an oil change can be needed based upon the computer's sensors. Interesting.

Isell, welcome back to SFTSF knew you couldn't stay away too long.
Mike, beautiful car. What's not to like about a pearl while Merc? I love white cars.
Stick, when I bought my 2003 Avalon the dealer almost did the exact same thing. They caught in detail / prep when the second key fob didn't work.
Things have been really crazy in our family. My Grandfather passed away last thursday. It was really sudden, he passed while taking a nap in his recliner. We were really close since my father passed when I was 12. He was 84.
He was to walk my Fiancé down the aisle for our wedding which is fast approaching (29 days). Going to be tough to get all the wedding stuff done while still grieving over the loss.
Oh, and just found out today, could be in for a change at work. No details yet, but a "stay tuned" kind of talk. I guess the last 7 weeks of field work wasn't enough of a change.
Thanks for listening, guys.

My sincerest and deepest condolences, *tjc. It would seem he was more of a father based on the loss of your Dad at such a young age. That's a wish of mine when I pass - to go softly during a nap on my recliner.
29 more days and you'll be tied together with your lovely bride. Definitely something to look forward to.

Very interesting! I would think it means there is an onboard computer but it doesn't tell you what is going on if you want to check. It will warn you if you need an oil change if that is what it detects. Interesting.....I think I should get my quarter back ......ha ha.
I bought a quart of oil for the Audi and they use Castrol. BMW has BMW oil.
I now carry a container with me in case I am on minimum when I am in the middle of nowhere, it is hard to remember to check the oil every month or so.
They used to do it at the gas station in the olden days, but not since they invented self serve gas stations.....
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
I guess they could show that graphically if you want. And actually, my Acura and Honda sort of do that (there is an oil life indicator that shows as a % of life left).
And BMW doesn't make oil of course. they just pay extra to have their name on the label. So probably it is just Castrol too!

You must be near 100 on the stress meter, a death in the family, a wedding, uncertainty at work.
Hopefully your Grandfather lived a healthy life, weddings are always stressful - especially when it is yours - but that will lead to many years of happiness, and work,.......well things usually turn out to be for the better in the long run.

Thanks, that means a lot.
I am mellowing with age. One of the things I have learned from being here is that most posts about cars are just opinions and ideas. No need to go over the top, few things are that important. Most cars today are pretty good, people buy what suits them. I like bmws, but that doesn't make them right for every one. I am glad you noticed I have improved over the years. I think what you are reading is more like the real me........the early days were my literary license self..........not the best.
If I could change some of those early posts I would. Since I can't, I'll just try to get better and hopefully add some knowledge and possibly some entertainment value to the site.
Thanks again, it was very kind of you to say that and I always look forward to reading your posts. Just get your production numbers up a bit, you have been slacking off lately (oh, the old me breaks through at times).

So very sorry for your loss. I went through this myself about 2 months ago while I was studying for the bar exam. Do your best to remember the happy times and focus on all of the great things you have ahead of you.
In terms of work change, I can also relate. We're relocating 2500 miles across the country two weeks before the wedding.
All the best - we're all here if you need us.
This is most certainly true. I've been upgrading my Garmin units for about 12 years now and haven't spent half of what a nav system in a car costs.
You won't be getting many (if any) other responses to your post--seems most others are invested in the onboard stuff.
I'm sure this is going to be what they call where I work (I try not to participate) "non-value-added."
If you have to spend seconds, let alone minutes (or hours), to figure out how not to pull a dipstick and look at it, my point is made, in spades.
84 years is a pretty good run, but sudden departures are jolting.
tjc, I am very sorry for your loss. May your departed grandfather's soul rest in eternal peace. Be strong for the rest of the family and remember it's okay to cry.
Good point! But, even the dipstick is pretty hard to locate in the Mercedes. When I was looking up this information it seemed quite a few people had trouble locating it - it seems to be behind the engine near the firewall - and the manual shows it on the wrong side of the engine. As someone pointed out, they may have reversed the engine, or maybe the engine is reversed in England to match driving on the other side of the road
These days it is hard enough to get people to check oil, tire pressure, windshild washer fluid, you would think they would make checking oil as easy as possible.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
NO you should stop immediately and put oil in. That’s why I ALWAYS have at least a full quart of oil in the trunk of my cars. I’ve rarely had to use it while on the road but it’s there if I need it and it wasn’t because the idiot light came on. It was when I checked the oil before starting out from the hotel/motel first thing in the morning.
Of course, for those who put their faith solely in an oil monitor system they will probably be in “the middle of Utah”, with no oil in their trunk, when the light/display goes off.

Quite frankly, *driver, if you hadn't mentioned about dipsticks and oil level monitors, I would never have opened the hood to look for it so soon after taking delivery (I'm highly motivated when it comes to a quarter bet).
Yes, the dipstick is way on the back of the engine near the firewall. Since it uses Mobil 1, I'm going to buy a quart at Target or Walmart (if I can get it there - if not, I'll get one at an auto parts store) and keep it in my trunk as *jmonroe suggested.
I would never wait for some idiot light to come on to alert me about oil levels. I usually check my oil once a week at the gas station.
The postings about tier 1 gasolines was very helpful. The Mercedes is also a direct injection engine, as was the Lexus. I asked the shop foreman at my Benz dealership about oil and gasoline this morning. He agreed that I should only use tier 1 gasoline in the Mercedes. He recommends Chevron, Mobil or Shell. The direct injection system was introduced last year and he said they have not had any problems to date with the new engine.
The reason I went up there was because my tire pressure monitors were showing 40 lbs. of pressure when hot. They told me to take 2 lbs. out of each tire to bring it down to 36/37 F & R. Cold, they should be 34/35. They are different sizes front and rear - so no rotations again.
