I might not understand what you mean by the above but it sounds like you think there is a difference between full synthetic and the extended 15K mile synthetic. They are both “full synthetic” but the extended version allows for extended mileage up to 15K miles before changing it.
Now for the caveat, at least for Mobil 1. I’m almost certain that Mobil 1 says that to maintain your factory warranty you should change the oil at the recommended interval found in your owner’s manual. For both of my cars (Genny and Subie) I’d be in trouble trying to go 15K miles because they recommend 7500 miles. So, I follow the manual but I back off and do it a little sooner and at my convenience. I'm looking for better lubrication not more miles. You’ll never see me trying to make it to Florida to save a few bucks because my car says it’s OK. :confuse:
FWIW, I agree with what ‘robr2’ said about synthetic blends and because of that I never used them. Why go half way?

Just to be clear, I can go 5000 miles before I need an oil change according to the monitoring system. I will do less than 1000 miles between now and the time we leave for Florida. The trip to Florida will be 1500 miles. So, I have a lot of time to get an oil change in Florida. Time wise, I don't really need oil until next November, because of my own cautious nature, I would like it done yearly, but I will only be a month and a half over if I wait until early January.
Having said all that, if I get a chance and I feel like it, I may go in for an oil change here, just because, it might be good for them to do a diagnostic test on the car before taking a big trip. That way, they can check to see everything is working well under warranty, and the oil change should last for one year. But, if I do, it won't be because I am worried that I am not changing the oil enough.

You will be happy to know I made an appointment to get my oil changed on Friday morning. Although it will cost $178 with tax, it is convenient...only 20 minutes away, and they will do a 30 point inspection which is a good thing before going on the long trip.
You have influenced me in a good way, because I don't think I would have thought about doing it here before the trip. But, the key factor is that this way it will be done, in case I don't calculate correctly, and I am stuck reaching my limit early. Also, the 12 months is up near the end of November, and though I don't have a problem with the 15K miles, I am not thrilled with oil being in the car for more than 12 months.
So, now you can go to sleep tonight and not have to worry about my engine seizing up on me.

Richard, I've known that for years! Anyone who would give up going into an established family business with a 6 figure salary to become a teacher and school principal/headmaster has to be nuts.
As for your question about extended mileage synthetic Mobil 1 vs. regular full synthetic Mobil 1, I believe the extended is for newer cars like BMW and Mercedes that recommend 12-15 K miles between oil changes while regular Mobil 1 is for new and slightly older cars where 7500-10,000 miles is the oil change interval.
I checked by info/service system messages this morning and it shows "A Service Due in 357 days"! So the system they use in my new Benz goes by time rather than mileage. I checked under the hood and it says that the recommended oil for Mercedes Benz is Mobil 1 Extended.
I then called my dealership, and they told me they use the Mobil 1 Extended on all the cars and still recommend oil change at the 12 month period (A service) or 10,000 - 12,000 miles, depending on the type of driving you do. If you drive short runs and city driving, 10,000 miles is recommended. More highway driving, 15,000 miles or once each year. So they leave it up to the owner to determine needs rather than a computer.
For me, 10,000 miles or each year using extended Mobil 1.

*driver, since you are paying for this oil change, when will BMW pay for your 1st oil change? Are they going to require you to have an oil change at 15,000 anyway or will they allow YOU to bring the car in for your free maintenance and oil change anytime after the 15,000 miles?
What I am trying to say here is when will BMW give you your 1st free oil change?
I just want to make sure they don't end up screwing you out of your free maintenance oil changes.

Amen to that one! Work on solutions - not agendas.
Holy smokes, Mike. You must have wanted to teach a lot! After graduating with a teaching degree and learning I didn't want to do that (my so-called cooperating teacher while I was student teaching had a lot to do with that) an option at one point was working for dad and eventually taking over the business. At the time I figured I could either work for him or let him be my dad but not both and chose the latter. That worked out.
Only downside to that is dad resisted a couple of offers to buy the business out while he still had his full complement of customers and didn't bite because they wanted him to stay as part of the business for a couple of years and dad avoided working with a boss for almost ever. By the time he saw the customer base shrinking as younger sales people started grabbing his customers as they retired and a new guy walked in the folks who were interested in buying the business saw that, too. Eventually it just faded away.
It is interesting how things turn out, that's for sure. I had many opportunities to go into the business, not just after getting my BS from NYU, but just after my engagement to my wife and again after I moved to the West Coast. But each time, I chose education.
When I look back on my teaching and administrative choices, I know I made the right decisions at the time given the variables I had some control over. I never made enough income to work one job - always had a second job to supplement my income to afford a house in the suburbs, a car for me and my wife and one for the kids, and then sending both kids to college. I could never make the kind of money I could have made in the family business.
But after my wife died, I decided to try something different - selling - which was shat I would have done in the family business. I made more money in the car business as a manager than I ever did as a school administrator. I guess I was always cut out to be in something combining management and sales.
To each his/her own!

We had over 40 salespeople in total and at any one time, there were usually 25 salespeople in the queue. So if you had no appointments or no one came in asking for you, on a slow day, it was possible you would not get a customer. So, at times, I would see some of the more experienced salespeople hanging out on the car lot waiting for a customer to browse and then they would tell the customer to go into the showroom and as for them by name. Now I have set the stage for you to see what can happen in a new car dealership if sleezy, slimy salespeople found a way to circumvent the system.
I was way down in the queue this one day so I was in my office making phone calls trying to get people in to try selling them a car. When I finally came out on the floor, I saw my customers, a husband and wife couple, finalizing a 2-car deal with one of those sleezy salesmen. When they saw me, they said they had asked for me when they drove into the parking lot, but this "kind" gentleman told us you were off today, but that he could help us. Now you need to know that on every computer on the dealership, the queue list is the default main page so that anyone could look at the screen to see who was "on" and who was "off" on any given day.
I did not want to make a big scene on the floor, so I went immediately yo the general sales manager to tell him what this crud salesman had done - lied to my customers on the lot and sold them 2 cars that should have been my sales. The general manager went with me to this salesman's office, asked the couple if they had asked for me prior to working with this salesman, and they both said yes - but we're told I wasn't working that day by the salesman. After hearing that, he asked the salesman to follow him and asked me to fill in while he met with that crumb!
About 10 minutes later, I saw that salesman driving off the property. When I went to the managers' offices, I was told that the salesman had been fired on the spot.
Interestingly enough, I made $2400 commission on those two cars.
I retold this story here to show all of you guys how cut-throat the car business is, especially in large dealerships like that one. It could have turned out that all I would have gotten was half the deal. But the next day at our sales meeting, the general manager had me stand and explain what had happened and then he said that if anything like that ever happened again, the perp would also be fired on the spot. I was lucky that he was a fair and reasonable manager, which is what I became when I went into sales management!

That sounds like the "Driver Method of Rationalizing any Payments"
More importantly, what's the big difference whether I pay in January or September, I'll need another oil change before 2 years or 15K miles anyway.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
I find that hard to believe. Are you throwing us another curve? There has to be a mileage component to the time to do an oil change. i think there is another warning in there somewhere.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
Good question Mike. I think what he tried to explain was that the nextfree oil change would stay on their schedule so it sounds like they are saying, if the free oil change was done at 18K miles then the next one would be 15K miles after, or longer if that is what the monitor says, or 24 months from the day I change the oil.
But, the main thing is, I will pay for it anyway...I never win at these things. I don't want to wait for 18K miles anyway....I'll change it at 10 to 12K. I am beginning to like Audi more...they are more upfront about when to have oil changes...more realistic time and you have the option of using their plan or not.
Incidentally, the service guy said, Many new BMW owners do this, and although BMW says you can go 15K miles, our dealership suggests you do them at 7500- miles and every 6 months. That's a bit over doing it, but they are out to make a buck too.

Nope! I have two screens in the car. The main screen (NAV) provides audio, navigation, telephone, weather, traffic, and system adjustments like time, language, etc.
There is another screen in the center of the speedometer that shows redundant info, but it is also the screen that shows tire pressure monitor, settings for lights, lane change and blind spot monitors, compass, light delay, light settings, and a sunscreen for servicing the vehicle. In that screen it shows service A due in 357 days. No mileage indicators.
But remember, I really haven't read the manual, so there may be a mileage component built into that. I'll read up on it and report back.

I read the manual - if the engine oil level approaches minimum levels, a digital message is displayed telling you to "check engine oil at next fuel refill". So there is a sensor that measures oil levels.
But the Assist function measures only days to next "A or B" service. It does not alert you in miles when to change the oil. So it is up to the owner to determine when oil is to be changed if sooner than the timeframe shown in the info screen.
2024 Genesis G90 Super-Charger

2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
It is possible that the system knows you won't do over 10K miles in a year and so it counts off days. I am just guessing, but let's say you start towing a trailer around and you will need an oil change at 5000 miles...then your readout might say change oil in 180 days.
In other words it is using a day counter, but is calculating mileage and type of driving. That's my guess, I think it is too simple to just say, get an oil change in 355 days....that's what the old sticker used to do.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
Actually, that isn't bad, it is pretty easy to know it is time to do an oil change when you reach a 10K mile mark....it isn't really necessary for bells and whistles and lights to go on to tell you that. Even if you do it at 8K most people can count 8, 16, 24, and whatever comes next.... :P
But, your MB does warn you when your oil level is getting low, and it sounds like it is a warning so you will have time to get to a place that sells oil.
btw...I am glad you told that story. Now I know why the salesman that sees you looking on the lot always gives you a card and says he will answer any of your questions when you come inside.
Nice going nailing that guy.

BMW must program the computer to reduce oil life as the conductivity rises, assuming that metals and other contaminants are allowing for better conductance in the oil. Three challenges:
1. Some contaminants won't raise conductivity and thus won't be measured, so BMW is counting on other contaminants rising with them. They're using modeling to predict expected results, but real-world conditions could make those models less accurate.
2. Conductivity sensors are notoriously picky about maintenance and calibration. Add a little scale on the poles and your conductivity becomes artificially impeded.
3. A conductivity sensor won't directly measure the additive package depletion that keeps oil within desired viscosity and provides enhanced lubrication. It's indirect and the computer could be confused by other elements reducing or increasing conductivity.
So, long story short, it's admirable that BMW is using scientific instrumentation, but don't rely on it alone (my humble opinion). Use good judgement like you're already doing with planning for the Florida trip.
Wonderful explanation of how a monitoring system works ty. Even I can understand it perfectly and though it is based on certain scientific principles, it may not measure everything.
I am glad you think it was best to do the oil change before the Florida trip, it confirms what my gut feeling was.
Using the Driver enhanced system of money management, I am getting the oil change 3 months early or 25% earlier, so on $180 it works out to about $22 more. That really makes it worthwhile doing it now.

Boy, have you changed your tune. In any case you’re doing the right thing.
If there is any time that you should change your oil ahead of schedule it’s the first time. That is when a car has its most wear so I always do the first one ahead of schedule. On Mrs. j’s Subie the salesman told me to pay particular attention to the sticker that was on the windshield showing that the car was due for an oil change at 3500 miles (maybe it was 4000, I’m not positive about what it said now) but to follow the manual and do oil changes at 7500 miles after the first one. And he was very emphatic about telling me this. So, good or bad, at least one car company thinks like I do about first oil changes. Mrs. j took her car in for its first oil change when it had just about 3200 miles.
I told this before, when I told her to be sure to tell them to put in synthetic, the guy at the desk said, “OK, if that’s what you want but you don’t have to do that. You can put in regular oil. The warranty will still be just as good”. She told him to do it with synthetic because that is what I wanted. She then has a discussion with the guy and told him about the XG350 that blew up. He just shook his head and said that would never happen with Subaru. I hope I don’t have to find out.
Having said that, I personally did the first oil change on the XG350 when it had a little less than 1000 miles. The car was about 2 months old so I figured since I had nothing to do that Saturday morning I’d change the oil. The best part about changing it yourself, and I know you will never be doing this, that is the perfect chance to rub the oil between your fingers and look for any small metal particles. I didn’t find any so the next part of my experiment was to cut the oil filter can apart and look to see what was trapped by the filter element. I did find some very small grains almost like sand. That made sense because that is what the filter is supposed to do. I was all smiles. I cut the can apart for probably the next 5 oil changes and each time it seemed like there was less and less grit trapped by the filter. This is not a substitute for having an oil analysis and if I had done a few of those my outcome with the dealer and Hyundai might have been different but that is water over the damn now.
I’ll never have to worry about anything like that with the Subie. After all, the guy at the desk said I wouldn’t. :surprise:

OK, *driver, you "got me" on this one. You were correct in your disbelief that Mercedes Benz would engineer a car without giving the driver/owner information in both miles and time.
I was driving to get my flu shot with Dad this morning. I decided I would go into the sub-menu called "ASSYST PLUS" which provides information about the next scheduled "A and B" services. And low and behold, I see "your next schedule A service is in 9600 mile". So, instead of showing 355 days, it now showed miles.
On the way home from walking at the Boca Town Center Mall, I decided I would try bringing up the information again, and low and behold it said "your next scheduled A service is in 355 days". So now, I am beginning to scratch my head, so I put in a call to my Service Manager and asked him why it is showing days (time) sometimes and miles at other times.
He said that there are "sensors" that send information to the car's computer that measure driving habits, speed, engine heat, distances and amount of time the engine is actually running. When the computer gets that information, it analyzes it and determines if the next scheduled service interval will be based upon mileage (which can change abruptly from 9600 miles to 7500 miles, depending upon usage of the car) or in days to next service (which can also change abruptly depending upon usage), according to him.
So, it shows both days and mileage to the next service, and adjusts depending upon the computer's interpretation of driving habits and engine use.
Thus, it would appear the car has a system similar to BMW's system. It just registers differently. If I need to add oil because the oil level lhas dropped to minimum levels, another system sends a message to my NAV screen telling me to check the oil at the next fuel stop. When I approach the day/mileage when I need to bring the car in for an A or B service, it also sends a message to my NAV screen telling me that the car is 2 days away from needing a scheduled service or 200 miles away from needing a scheduled service. To monitor when or how many miles to the next service, I go into another subsystem to find out that information before it shows it on the NAV screen.
In short, it tells me when and/or how many miles to my next service as well as tells me when I need to add oil.
I hope this settles this issue once and for all - and thanks *driver for pushing me to finally find out how my car provides information. It forced me to read my manual for the first time in years.

First, you put the phone into this hard plastic/silicone case and snap it together. Then, you place this rubber casing around that. I have not dropped the phone yet, but at least I feel it won't self destruct if I do. But over the past 2 months, I noticed that the rubber cover around the case was stretching out of shape and no longer was secured to the case. I went into AT&T where I bought the case and they said to contact Otterbox. I looked them up and gave them a call. I spoke to this nice young lady who said they were in beautiful Colorado, who said that she would be more than happy to replace the case. I said that I didn't think I had a receipt, but she said no problem, so they are sending me a brand new case. Then, I started to wonder, and I asked her if there have been many complaints about this particular case for the 4S (I had one for the 3GS which was ine and was different than this one) and she responded that they have had calls about the case from people in the southern states and they have decided to replace the case in those situations. I guess there are still a few GOOD, CARING AND RESPONSIBLE companies left in the U.S. who car more about customer satisfaction that just profits! Good for you, Otterbox!
Then, I was using my iPhone yesterday and I get this "alert" that there is new software available for the iPhone 4S which is the same software being used in the upcoming iPhone 5, "iOS 6.0" I believe is what it is called. It took about 35 minutes to download the new operating system for my phone and boy, what a difference in just about everything in the phone. I called Apple and they said that my phone would operate as well as the iPhone 5, but that there would be different features available on the "5" that the "4S" doesn't have. This is just another example of an outstanding company that cares more about customer satisfaction than just profit. Remember, they replaced my 3GS with the 4S because I was having so many problems with it. Great company!
That's it for THIS AND THAT

Did you expect anything different from a city where politics and politicians RULE everything? Did you expect Obama and/or Emanuel or Axelrod to allow this strike to continue and not support the unions?
I worked as a teacher in Chicago when I first started teaching and was on strike with the Chicago Teacher's Union back in the late 1960's. My salary was less than $4000.00 a year. After the 3 day strike, my salary went to $5000 a year, and rapidly increased after that. But, when the average teacher is earning over $75,000 in the city of Chicago, remember that at least half of that salary is "combat" pay. I was in the city of Chicago Public Schools for only 4 years - the stress and lack of support from administration and parents was overwhelming to me. I ended up in a suburban school district which paid me the same salary with less stress and I was not afraid to stay after school to help some kids improve or meet with concerned parents.
The City of Chicago and the State of Illinois are in serious financial straits. I am wondering where the City is going to get the money to pay for those raises. Hmm, think there will be a special grant given to the Chicago Public Schools from the U.S. Department of Education which is headed by the last superintendent of Chicago Public Schools? Or a phone call from Obama to the Secretary of Education telling him it would be nice if we could send them some financial aid for settling the strike before the election?
Just thinking out loud!

Interesting, tjc. I never had a problem with the 3GS case - it fit better. The rubber around the casing was fastened to the plastic case much better and adhered better. This case does not have a good way of attaching the rubber to the case - it stretches out very easily.
From what that nice lady in Colorado told me, the problem is being looked into by Otterbox since there have been so many complaints in the warmer climate states. I don't think they have fixed the problem, but at least I will have a better fit for a year until my contract with ATT is over and I can get a new phone and case.

That means that even if there is no increase in the salaries for teachers, there would still be an increase for experience, usually about $1000 per step. In addition to the step increases, there are also "lane" increases. Lane increases are about $500 per lane. If you have a BA and then take 10 Graduate Hours, you would go from the BA lane to the BA+10 lane. It goes to BA +30. Then, the is the MA lane, and then MA + 10, 20, 30, etc.
I know this sound confusing, but in short, you can get a raise each time you complete 10 additional graduate hours up to 30. Then, another raise for a Masters Degree. Then additional raises for MA +10, etc.
Most school districts in large cities have these kinds of salary schedules. When I went to the suburbs, I already had my MA +30 hours, so I was place on the MA+30 lane, but when you started a new school district, most would only give you credit for up to 10 years experience, nothing beyond that.
Then you have pensions! In Chicago, the teachers pay into a pension plan as well as social security. But in the rest of the State of Illinois, teachers do not pay into social security, they pay into the pension fund only (8.8% which is expected to rise to 9+% shortly). Thus, most teachers in the State of Illinois are not covered by Social Security, but pay directly into their pension fund. Thus, if the State Pension Fund should go belly up (which is probably will in 10-20 years because the state of Illinois is not placing sufficient funds into the pension fund as required by the state constitution - which is why Illinois is going broke) most teachers in the state would have nothing when they retire because they don't qualify for social security.
In many states, like Wisconsin, teachers pay into social security, but paid nothing into a pension fund that the state paid for for each teacher. All Wisconsin wanted to do is have teacher put some of their own money (2.3%) into that pension fund because the state could not affort it any more. So now, they have to put some money into their pension fund. In Illinois, the teachers have always put money into their pension fund (70% of the money in the fund) and could possible retire with nothing.
I get a pension from Illinois State Teacher's Retirement System because I put 8.5% of my total salary into the system. In most states, teachers don't put anything near that into their pensions. That is the problem. But in Illinois, which is almost totally bankrupt, where teachers have always put large percentages of their salaries into the pension system, the state cannot afford to support the teachers pension because they have been putting so much of the states funds into other state employee pension funds where the employees pay nothing into it.
Good Grief...What a Mess!
