If there was an automatic 10 year prison term for carrying a gun in public, then there won't be too many people walking around packing a gun.
If you want to take your gun out to a shooting club or to shoot some deer, you go to the registry and state how long you intend to be carrying your weapon and where you are going with it.
One bullet Darangers are allowed for self-protection, if you have taken a certified course.
I am a business guy. If there is a problem, there is a solution, that's what makes the capitalistic system work so well. We can say all we want about making the country safe for kids, needing more control over guns, try to get the murder and slaughter rate down, reduce homicide rate....the fact is, if people think it is normal and natural to carry a gun around in public, then those statistics aren't going to change very much. We do a lot of crying, sympathizing, agonizing over how bad the Newton incident is, but, no one wants to change the status quo....that is dysfunctional.

Yes, it isn't easy defining hate. Opinions are one thing, but enciting hatred should be an offense. It is fine to say we have and need free speech, but, there are boundaries for everything.
If you want to run a website that denies the Holocaust, then do it, those people who read it are going to believe it anyway. But, if you start teaching it in a school, then it is much more serious. It's the old, you have freedom of speech, but you can't yell out fire in a packed movie theatre.
Greater minds than mine have to come up with something workable, but, doing nothing means we will all be standing around saying that was too bad, we have to do something about this, the next time a Newtown happens.

I wrote to them and told them my thoughts, and told them I would consider working on a nice soft goldies music channel if they are interested.
In the meantime, I bought a USB Flash so I can find music on the internet. And, I don't know if someone mentioned this, but, I can record music from DVDs onto the hard drive in the multi entertainment centre. I recorded to Franki Valli and the Four Seasons CDs onto the hardrive. I have no idea how much more it will hold, nice not to mess with CDs though.
I am catching up to the new age though....not a total dinosaur yet.

since it has the USB input (so I can plug a flash drive in) it is not something I can say I miss. Plus it would probably take about 3 years before I got ambitious enough to actually do something with it.
Also, Driver, pretty sure that you don't have to load it from CDs. You can, but you can also drop a bunch of music onto the flash drive, and upload from there.

Thanks tjc, I had no idea how many CDs the hard drive would hold. I remember someone mentioned they used the hard drive and I didn't even know I had one. I was playing the CD on a long trip, so decided to search to see if I had one. Very easy and what a great feaure.

I bought my $10 16 GB USB stick too, I am going to load that up with music too, our IT guy at work will show me how to do that this week. Need it for next Sunday when we head for Florida. Long range weather says cloudy and 32F in Detroit for next Sunday.

The NRA, of course, exists to make handguns and assault rifles like the ones used in Newtown more accessible. Unsurprisingly, the lobby group has had nothing to say about the killings.

Interesting. What were the 2011 numbers for Mexico? I understand that they have draconian gun control measures in place.
Another reason for their low crime rate is the fact that they have very strict controls on muslims and allow very few into their country. I wonder why that is?

That is precisely why it was added by the founders to the Bill Of Rights. Had nothing to do with self-defense or hunting for food. King George and Parliament at the time had outlawed the possession of firearms by colonists of the North American colonies. It was intended to prohibit the "means" of revolution from occurring. Without firearms, the colonists would never have been able to organize and sustain a revolution against the tyrannical government of England.
In the Declaration of Independence, the colonies stated that when a government commits intolerable acts upon its people, it was the right and duty of the people to remove/dissolve that government by force, if necessary.
IMHO, The Government, if it wanted, could easily become oppressive and impose its will over the people by usurping the power necessary to impose whatever "it" wanted in order to sustain "itself" and handguns and automatic weapons would not be able to stop "it" from becoming totalitarian. The government controls the armed forces and the weapons - it is the judiciary and the legislature that balances that power. However, with the way the courts have ruled recently and the way congress has ramrodded legislation, the founders would be flabbergasted over what has happened in this country. We have a congress that can't pass laws, a judiciary that dictates and legislates by themselves, and an executive branch that issues mandates and policies that override congress.
So whether we have guns or not, the government has become much too powerful to change by or through the use of handguns and AK47's by the citizenry. So, IMHO, the right to bare arms is an archaic right because if our government wanted to, it would be impossible to overthrow if it became totalitarian.
So why allow the public to bare arms?

OK, I understand now, I thought you were saying I can make statistics say what I want. What you are saying is 180 murders by guns in Canada (population 35 Million) is a lot worse than 58 gun murders in the UK (pop 165M)
We have more gun deaths in Canada than the UK because guns come to Canada from the US. We have some gun laws, like you can't carry a gun around with you here. But, criminals do get guns in Canada. The UK is a lot stricter, so yes there numbers are lower.
But, nothing you have said explains 12000 gun related murders in the US in one year and no plan to try to lower that Are you satisfied with that statistic? Are those 20 kids just a statistic? Will it happen again or was that a fluke?

I too like channel 17 (the Love channel) but since they switched to Christmas music I have been relying more on downloaded music.
My taste in music is rather eclectic so I buy music from the iTune store. I download the music to my computer and transfer it to my flash drive (USB 2.0 stick). It works great in my LaCrosse but not so in Ford vehicles. At a $1.29 per song the music is relatively inexpensive. And if you buy an album it is even cheaper yet. One minor frustration I've had though, I cannot get any of Adele's music to play from my flash drive.
Recording music from a CD or DVD to a hard drive is easy enough. You insert the CD and press record. And voila! your music is permanently stored. A nice feature is that you can delete the music you don't like by simply pressing Delete.
By the way, what is situation when you sell your car with music recorded on the hard drive? I understand there could be a copyright problem. Can anybody explain?
Are you joking......Mexico has draconian gun control measures in place!
Mexico has little control over crime at all. Mexico can be a very dangerous place to be in most areas......your chance of survival is almost zero in some areas.
However, to answer your question, about the same number of gun homicides a year as the US, 12000. With a poulation of about 1/3 the US at 115M.
Basically, the US is number 11 for most homicides in a year, just below some of the worst countries in the world for murder by guns.
If you are going to defend that awful statistic, you aren't going to try to solve the problem. The gun lobby people have all of these answers, but, they think it is OK if 12000 people a year are killed by guns, not to mention 20 innocent children and their poor teachers.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
I agree, Japan is an extreme example....I just wanted to show what is possible in a civilized country.
But, as I have told a few others, if you are going to defend a murder rate that high....12000 people a year, then you must think that is acceptable. And, if you think it is acceptable that someone goes to a school, university, post office, place of work, home invasion, rob a store, and can use a gun to murder someone then you have a different opinion than I do of what a civilized country should be trying to do to solve this problem.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
I learned some valuable information today. I am glad you explained that. It really shows how the right to bear arms has been distorted to suit the gun lobby.
When people become polarized and have one view you can't have a rational logical discussion. When a popular radio host gets a conspiracy theorist on the phone he says good buy, there is no use talking to them. They always come back with statements that aren't rational, but, they will defend their position...they can't prove they are right and you can't prove they are wrong....so they say they are right. If they argue there is a God, or there isn't a God, they will always win, because you can't prove them wrong......they don't have to prove they are right.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
In 1981 Massachusetts passed the most restrictive gun law in the nation, The Bartley-Fox Gun Law. The law imposed a one-year mandatory prison sentence for a person found carrying a firearm. Studies showed in the short run gun violence decreased but non-gun robberies and homicides increased.
According to a study by Pierce and Bowers, "the timing of the law's impact suggests that it was the publicity about the law's intent rather than the severity or certainty of the punishments actually imposed under the law that was responsible for the observed reductions in gun-related crimes."
*driver, your comments seem purely political - when you comment about the gun lobbyists. All you should have gotten from my last post was that the right to bare arms OR the "need" to bare arms is no longer a useful or effective means of overthrowing a tyrannical government in the 21st century here in the United States.
In Syria and Libya, arms are what has allowed the revolutionists to overthrow their governments (Syria is still to be decided). But here in the United States, if the people wanted to overthrow the government, hand guns, missiles, bazookas and automatic guns and rifles would be insufficient to accomplish that overthrow or revolution because the power lies with the government, not with the people as espoused in our constitution.
So why the "need" to bare arms?
The same is true with our election process here in the US. The electoral college process allows for a president to be elected without a majority of the popular vote - just a majority of the "electoral" vote. This needs to be changed because this, too, is archaic. It was put into the constitution so that the more populous states would have more power over the less populous states - a sort of compromise to get agreement (Connecticut Compromise it is called). But to counterbalance that, each state has two senators, no matter what their population. Again, a compromise. But the election of the president should be by popular vote, and by no other means. This is no longer a reasonable or needed part of our constitution - I am speaking about the electoral college.
So, there you have it - pure logic and not politics - no need for the right to bare arms and no need for the electoral college - but for totally rational reasons - not political reasons. Do you understand now what I tried to convey?
Has nothing to do with the gun lobby - but with the fact that the right to own guns could never stop a tyrannical government here on the US from taking power. If the populous is stupid enough to vote for people to represent them in Washington that would usurp their freedoms and power, then so be it! That's a democracy, like it or not!
2024 Genesis G90 Super-Charger
As passed by the Congress:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
which certainly agrees with what you described.
I do agree with your thoughts on the electoral college. That can go away.
but the though of this country getting through a major constitutional convention and updating the constitution, in the current climate, is laughable. And actually terrifying, considering some of the groups that will be angling to have a big say in things.
Maybe you could get the electoral college removed, but I am sure there are enough entrenched power groups with a vested interest in keeping that (including the party in charge) that it will never happen.

Personally, I have been on the wrong end of a gun twice in my life, so I feel it about intent.
Intent is very difficult to plan your life around.
Anyways, we had a family discussion about what I wanted for Christmas today.
What I want is a new car, but that's out of the question, so I went with #2, which is a new TV.
Nothing too spectacular, but the whole discussion went down the tubes when my 2 kids, neither of them teenagers any more, started arguing about who should get the 7 year old screen it would replace.
I'm just chalking it up to holiday stress.
In short, you are being rather ridiculous.
2013 LX 570 2016 LS 460
There have always been guns around here.
2013 LX 570 2016 LS 460
Without doubt, *stickguy, without doubt. Neither of those would get passed by congress or by a constitutional convention.
I agree that the right to bare arms was an important concept back in the 1770's. remember "their" (founders) perspective! I also believe we "should" have the right to have a handgun or rifle in our homes if nothing more than for home defense and for hunting game. That right should be protected, but for "those" reasons and not for the reason of baring arms in case it is necessary to curb the authority of a tyrannical government here in "this" country. What good would a militia do, even armed to the teeth, against the US government?
It's the "rationale" for the right to have guns and rifles that is archaic. That right now has a different rationale - some people feel safer with a 9mm Glock in their home for protection of the family and its property. Others like to hunt for game or sport. Both reasons are understandably rational and appropriate. Some people like skeet and trap shooting while others like to go to a firing range to shoot at targets. For those reasons, the right to bare arms should be protected.
The government should have the power to regulate the sale and possession of those firearms (pistols and rifles) and ammunition for those firearms. But we should "eliminate" the right to possess, own, purchase, etc., firearms which are of an assault nature like AK 47's, M-16's, and the like.
That ban would not have prevented the massacre of those children, however! The shooter used 9mm and 10mm handguns.
So, all I am trying to say here is that the reason for having the right to bare arms has changed - as you agreed. That right can be further protected for the modern-day rationale by eliminating assault weapons from the list of legal ownership. That might have prevented the killings in West Virginia and Colorado, but not the shootings in Connecticut or Arizona.

Well, I guess the new owner should delete any music he/she doesn't actually own on CD/Tape/vinyl/8track/legal MP3 download, however you and I both know that will never happen. I also seriously doubt the RIAA is coming to get you.
I once sold an MP3 with close to 5000 songs on it. I seriously doubt the new owner didn't copy those to his hard drive.
Frankly, I wouldn't worry about it. If you are concerned when you sell your car just wipe the hard drive.

Thanks stickguy, I really like that feature. I am going to try, with the help of our IT expert, to record some songs on the USB and see how that works.
I paid $75 for Sirius for one year renewal. That is the tops I would ever pay for it. It is simple and easy to use, and I like listening to Howard occassionally, especially when he does an interview or analysis the news, but, that isn't enough to get me to buy it.

I have to applaud their actually looking into the problem in this shooting as one of many around the world.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
The reporter looked disappointed, so I offered her my theory. “Events like this,” I said, “if they are influenced by anything, are influenced by news programs like your own. When an unbalanced kid walks into a school and starts shooting, it becomes a major media event. Cable news drops ordinary programming and goes around the clock with it. The story is assigned a logo and a theme song; these two kids were packaged as the Trench Coat Mafia. The message is clear to other disturbed kids around the country: If I shoot up my school, I can be famous. The TV will talk about nothing else but me. Experts will try to figure out what I was thinking. The kids and teachers at school will see they shouldn’t have messed with me. I’ll go out in a blaze of glory.”
In short, I said, events like Columbine are influenced far less by violent movies than by CNN, the NBC Nightly News and all the other news media, who glorify the killers in the guise of “explaining” them. I commended the policy at the Sun-Times, where our editor said the paper would no longer feature school killings on Page 1. The reporter thanked me and turned off the camera. Of course the interview was never used. They found plenty of talking heads to condemn violent movies, and everybody was happy.

Well, when I see somebody saying that Mexico (where I'm from and was there two weeks ago) is worse than a war zone and that I was lucky to get out alive, then I think that person's "freedom of speech" has gone too far.
Yeah, that's why I used "especially." I agree with what you say; I've been to Mexico a few times on business over the past two years and saw nothing that supported the negative hype that's often thrown around. While Chihuahua can be an "interesting" city, I saw nothing untoward during the 9-10 days I spent there on two separate occasions.
So in addition to my complimentary 1st service (oil/filter change, fluid top off...), I'm going to have them fix some small issues.
