So I'm sitting here, doing some emails and typing letters, etc., when it dawned on me! "...Why not burn a DVD disc with all 100+ songs and then play the disc in the car?" And then, I can transfer the music to the cars hard-drive, if I want. So I took a DVD disc that has a capacity of 4.7 gigabites and burned all the songs to the disc. I then tried it out on my media player on the computer, and the sound reproduction is stupendous.
Tomorrow morning I will take that disc down to the car and see if it works in the audio system. I know I can play DVD movies from the system, so it should take this DVD into the CD changer without an problems. But...you never know. I've seen many customers come back to the dealership where I once worked complaining that they put a disc into the changer and it jammed only to find out it was a DVD they put in, not a CD.
I better read the owner's manual first before putting this into the changer.
I'll let you know how I make out.
Thanks to *driver and the rest of you guys, the info you shared last week about this exact process was helpful in helping me make a decision to bypass using the phone all the time.
Hope everyone is enjoying the New Year. In the high 70's today, but very cloudy. Tomorrow, in the 80's with clear skies and a nice easterly breeze. Enjoy, everyone!

Mike, I did a similar thing with the help of my computer expert at work. You can consider this....I don't think I could do it on my own, so if there are any techies out there maybe you can fill in on instructions for Mike.
First, see if your MB has a hard drive for music.
Put your itunes onto your computer.
Buy a $10 Flash Drive or USB memory stick.
You can simply plug this into the outlet (mine is in the console). Find muti-media or something on your list of options.
Play the music from the Flash stick OR even better;
I have another USB plug in the glove compartment. If, I plug into that one I can record the music onto the cars hard drive. I can add albums as well from the CD player, and add them to my music.
Then I can choose to play the songs from itunes, or from each album, or for best results I put the whole list on random and it chooses which songs to play choosing the songs at random.
Another thing my computer guy did was record about 5 hours of music from icebergradio.com which is like Pandora in the U.S.
He put the music into a music file on the computer. It cost me $20 to buy a way to store this music, but once I pay for it I can do it as much as I like.
Record the music on the computer for 5, 10 or 12 or 24 hours, whatever you like.
Check the list and delete the songs you don't want.
Put what remains on a Flash Stick. Either play music directly from the Flash Stick, or put it on the hard drive.
I know it depends on if you have a built in hard drive. I didn't know I had one until a year after I bought the car, when someone mentioned it here.
Hope that may be of some help. My Computer guy is going to record more music from iceberg for me tomorrow, and see if he can send it to me! :shades:

Yes it does - that is what I am going to save the contents of the DVD to. But I may just keep it on the DVD. It will show the title, the performer and the album cover on my NAV screen in the car as per the owner's manual. I don't want to save anything on the hard drive because I am still developing my playlists.
I'll figure out everything tomorrow morning in the car.
Thanks for the info.

Yes, that is pretty cool when the album cover shows up. I didn't think of that though, when the music is on the hard drive, the artist and title are shown, but not the album cover.
Still it is nice to have the music right on the hard drive. I just paid $90 for a year of Sirius and I hardly ever use it, what can be better than hearing your favorite music that you selected?

My Explorer with My Ford Touch does that as long as I use the USB cable to plug in my iPhone.
I have yet to use a CD in the Explorer.
Yes, not much use for CDs these days. They are awkward, you have to have them around, then put them in and take out while you are driving. Much better to record them onto the hard drive or put them on a Flash Stick, or phone etc.
Talk about awkward, it is scary seeing the way people drive around here with there phones in their ear, and texting. They say 90% of the people in the Tampa area want to make it illegal to text while driving. But, of course, there are a small majority who don't want a person's civil rights to do what they want, taken away.
I am more concerned with the civil rights of the poor innocent person who gets hit by someone who was engrossed in texting while driving.

I’m getting ready for the XM battle when the subscription runs out on Mrs. j’s Subie in about 2 months, I think. Not only will I have to battle XM, I’ll have to deal with her too. She will be far worse than the XM people. Just last week when we were in her car she said something like, “I hope you’re not planning on getting that THING again (referring to XM). This is MY car and I don’t want it. I never use it so as far as I’m concerned it’s a waste of money”. See what I mean? You don’t have to start feeling sorry for me because in the end I’ll get it. Using her often used words, ‘I’m spoiled and always get my way’. It’s nice to know that she knows that. It makes life so much easier.
As for all this talk about music in the car, you guys are worse than a bunch of teeny-boppers. Both the Genny and her Subie have a hard drive but I’ve never felt the need to use it on either car. The Genny has a 6 CD changer, so along with that and XM, I don’t need anything more than that. The Subie can only take one CD and I have that loaded with a Neil Diamond CD so that seems to satisfy her when she is bored with AM/FM. I don’t know why she is so stubborn but I’ll get my way in the end, I’m sure of it. All I have to do is beat up XM like I’ve been doing since 2010 when the subscription expired on the ’09 Genny. That’s the easy part.

That is because they are dying. I believe in 5-10 years there will be little if any physical media for music and movies.
I have an entire closet filled with at least well over 1000 CDs and probably 500 or more DVDs. It is just taking up space. The music (along with hundreds more) is already complelely digital on my various devices, the movies are next.
I am planning on getting two/three giant network hard drives that will work with a Media Receiver (can't pull the trigger on a particular one yet) that connects to my network and streams everything to main TV in the living room. Everything ready to play at the click of a button.

I don’t know about you guys but I’m about up to here with this civil rights thing. The minority is more powerful than the majority because of that, in my opinion, STUPID law (or is it an amendment. I might have been out sick that day). I’m sure our founding fathers did not intend for it to go as far as it has been taken today. Putting others at serious risk is ridiculous because of your so called rights to do as you please. You’re not allowed to shoot someone just because you feel like it so there are ways to enforce that law when they want to do it. At least they did it in PA.
PA passed a no texting law last year and it was a long time coming. I have to admit that I don’t see near as much of it as I did before the law but it’s still being done way too much.

Oh, I'm quite sure of that.
My comment was towards burning music even onto a DVD like mike planned to do in order to listen to music. He has the perfect music device with him all the time (his iPhone) and that's what I use for music, podcasts, et al. All I use the radio in my vehicles for is sports radio and live NPR. Everything else is via the iPhone.

You are so right. The next thing they will be talking about is wireless charging devices for their cell phones and music players.
One of the major drawbacks of smart phones is how quickly their batteries are depleted, needing a charge sometimes even twice a day. Wireless charging, however, is intended to take range anxiety out of the equation. Some new phones have that capability built in, but for existing phones the choices are less clear as there are competing standards out there, which leads to my question:
Does wireless charging work in all cars or only in 2013 models or later? And which wireless charging standard is used at Starbucks and major airports?
I am in the same boat, *jmonroe. My introductory subscription to Sirius/XM radio runs out in 2 months. I have a big decision to make regarding extending the subscription. There are several variables I must consider since I have that DVD MP3 disc in the car (it works greats - outstanding sound reproduction) that has 100+ of my favorite songs:
1. Can I get Sirius/XM weather and traffic without getting the music?
2. What is the best deal I can get on a 2 year subscription?
3. If I cancel the subscription, is there a full refund on the unused portion?
I will probably call them about 2 weeks before the end of the introductory term (March 1st or February 28th would be about 10 or 12 days prior to the end of the freebee). If I can get both the traffic/weather and music for around $125.00 a year, give or take a few bucks, I will probably do it. If not, I will just cancel it.
Let me know how you make out, *jmonroe, I'd be interested in your feedback.

I don't agree with you, *driver. I have a 6 disc changer which takes DVD's as well as CD's. I can load 4.3 gigabites of music on each DVD I insert into the changer, or over 25 gigabites of music on 6 DVD's (MP3). If I had a car that did not have a 6 disc changer, I would feel the same as you. Probably the new Mercedes Benz vehicles will be doing away with the 6 disc changer as have most manufacturers. When that happens, I will have to use a flash drive (which it has) or transfer all my music to the car's hard-drive. I prefer not to transfer the music to the hard-drive at the present time.
In the future, there will be more options available as technology advances further, but right now, I have these options which are acceptable to me.
2024 Genesis G90 Super-Charger
Good point, but you said it yourself that a flash drive would work. You can buy a 32GB flash drive for $25 and you can edit the files at any time. Easier IMHO.

You may have been busy at the time, but I got letters from Sirius to sign up for $18 a month. I took your advice and I ignored them. Just before the deadline they phoned me and offered one year for $75, with music tax and sales tax $93 a year. I thought it was worth that much.
But, I really prefer the music on the hard drive and the Flash Sticks now.
My wife just listens to the 24 hour news station. I say it's the same news every 10 minutes....makes my head spin. Who needs to know the weather every 10 minutes? I guess when you get to my age you forget it by then.
You can say we are teenie boppers, but it makes driving much more pleasureable having nice sounding music as you drive. Music sounds beautiful in a car....it's like having a private stereo room.

Thank goodness I am not the only one who feels that the "protecting your civil rights" arguement is getting out of hand. The basic principle is a good one, but, these days it has been distorted to be ridiculous.
People don't have a right to drive however they want or to do what they want when they are driving....if it could infringe on someone elses right to an expected degree of safety and freedom from harm or death.

tjc said it better than I could. If it works for you then go with it...I am not very quick to change to the latest trends myself - it took me a year before I knew the car had a hard drive or Flash Drive capability.
But, CDs are going to be like 8 tracks and cassette players are now. Personally, I think they are kind of clunky to handle compared to a Flash Drive, just the storage situation alone. I have some CDs in a carry case in the trunk, I never remember to put them in the car....but I can store 2 dozen Flash Sticks in the console and still have room for other stuff.

I don’t think you can but when you contact them you can ask. However, once they know what you want they’ll probably try to bump you on that. So, it will probably be better to take the whole package.
2. What is the best deal I can get on a 2 year subscription?
I don’t know about a 2 year deal because I’ve never asked for that. Maybe I should this time since I know I want it. Like I’ve said before, “I’d pay full MSRP for it if I had to” (last year it was $179 ish) but I’m surely not going to tell them that. The way I look at it, they can turn me off if they don’t want to play ball. I can always call THEM and get the full MSRP price, right? I’ve always gotten the “one time only offer” which is not really a one time only offer because I keep getting it. The last time I got it was for the ’09 Genny last spring and IIRC it was something like $96 all in which included taxes and “music royalty fee”. So that’s what I will be shooting for this time around too.
Come to think of it, they probably won’t do a 2 year deal at that price because that is supposed to be a one time only offer, but I’ll see what they say. I think I’ll phrase it like this, “Hey, I’ll commit to a 2 year deal but only if you give me last years price for the 2 years. What do you have to say about that”? Man, I better be careful if they bite on that offer because when Mrs. j gets the bill she’ll flip when it’s more than I told her it would be.
3. If I cancel the subscription, is there a full refund on the unused portion?
I don’t know about this either.
Let me know how you make out, *jmonroe, I'd be interested in your feedback.
I gather you’re referring to how I make out with Mrs. j because like I’ve been saying all along XM is the easy part.
FWIW, this is a family forum so I’m not allowed to tell you “how I make out” with Mrs. j. You want my dues to go up or worse?

Why not get an iPod and download all your music to that? Better yet, get an iPhone or iPad and use icebergradio and pandora while on long drives?
Why not get an iPod and download all your music to that?
I didn't mean I carry 2 dozen Flash Sticks...I just mean I could carry that many compared to the room CDs would take up.
I think I can get 600 songs on an 8 GB Flash Stick, that's more than enough...that's only about how many good songs there are.

Today, temperature is 75F, I went for a nice swim in the pool which is 84F. Did a few laps. Got out of the water and reached in my pocket, and there were the keys to my $60K 5er dripping wet still in my pocket. I was a bit concerned, and I don't imagine these keys are cheap - the kind that start the car while they are in your pocket.
Anyway, I got home, locked and unlocked the car. Started it up fine. I am glad these guys thought to make them waterproof, or is it klutzproof? Anyway whewwwwww!

Gee, *jmonroe, you are so very helpful whenever anyone asks you for information or assistance. Was this instilled upon you when you were a little boy by your parents or was this some training Mrs. JMonroe delivered to you through the years? My take on it is that Mrs. JMonroe had much to do with your empathy and understanding.
I think you were right about the 1 vs. 2 year deal. They seem to have a special only with the 1 year deal, from my recollection when I took it out on the 2012 Mercedes. And I believe I got a full refund from them when I cancelled it.
Satellite Radio is a nice thing to have if you travel quite a bit in the car you happen to have the Sirius/XM subscription. I don't travel that much out of town. We have outstanding "HD" FM stations down here on the southeast coast, I think at last count it was over 14 of them - and in addition, most of them have 2 or 3 HD settings, not just one. In other words, if you go to a station like 93.1 down here, and then you manually turn to the next station, it automatically stops on HD2. One of the station has 3 different HD frequencies in the one main FM frequency. I don't know if most of you already knew that.
I am seriously thinking (Siriusly) about not getting Satellite Radio. I have my favorite music on the MP3 DVD, and there are only 4 or 5 music channels on Sirius that I ever listen to. I haven't listed to satellite radio since Thanksgiving when I went up I-95 to my brother's house just south of Jacksonville. I'll have to give it some serious thought (sirius thought).
Thanks, *jmonroe, for all your help and time.

Glad I'm not the only one who does these things! I give the car makers a lot of credit for making these new keys waterproof.
I still don't know how all these manufacturers come out with the same technology at the same time.....they all had GPS units, keyless keys?, multi-function media centres, bluetooth, USB ports, all at the same time.
I was just reading 2012 was a very good year for the auto industry in the U.S. Seems the average car is a record 10+ years old, so people have to replace aging vehicles. They think this will continue next year as the average age of the vehicles not replaced will be 11 years.
I know there is a recession going on, but you wouldn't know it if you go by the Bob Evans, Denny's, down the street, or any Cracker Barrel restaurant, as well as most of the better restaurants around.

We also have a second radio and that gets the multi receiver discount.
Also, my wife's trial subscription will be up in a few more months, so we will probably extend that one.
Just as a side note, while I was checking some stock prices, I noticed Sirius/XM was among the most active stocks today, and up about 3%.
Is that because they are expecting new car sales to rise? Many come with a pre paid trail subscription.
What's that old saying "you can't fix stupid"? Passing a law against drugs or guns or texting won't stop the stooopid people. I'd rather see more severe punishment for the harm caused by such people. If you are involved in an accident while texting you should lose your license.
The sad fact is that many of these traffic laws are just money grabs for government and the well-heeled can just buy their way out.

A lot of stocks were probably up about 3% today, but that could be because of the success Sirius is having converting trial runs on new cars into subscriptions.
Sirius is a great idea, but I think Flash Drives and built in USB ports and hard drives will take away a good chunk of their business. Unless they can custom make their playlists better. It seems a lot of people like to make up their own playlists, and they have ways to play it while driving.
I don't understand how Sirius can take a nice music channel like Love #17, and play Christmas songs from November 1 until Dec 31. The 50 and 60s music is ok but has a lot of obscure music that I am sure no one remembers. every other song seems to be Little Richard or Chuck Berry and I am not much of a fan (those were before your time explorer). So, I don't see much of a future for Sirius, unless they can adapt and maybe make it so you can actually choose the songs you want to hear. Today, technology has to change or it will be replaced.

I know, we are trying to do our bit to keep the economy rolling, even in spite of many of the politicians. If every one bought 2 new cars a year like you do (geez, I bought 3 in a year) think how much better the economy would be.
There probably wouldn't be a physical cliff at all.

I have the other opinion that things are much nicer and better when the snowbirds go back up north:
*much less traffic and congestion
*restaurants lower their prices and have more specials
*shopping is so much better in the markets like Publix and Winn Dixie - no lines
*you can get a chaise lounge by the pool anytime of day
*you can get to where you are going in half the time
*less badly spoken English like cawfee, wahta, cah, bah, Pennsylvanier, Lawng Eyelan, Nawth Dickoda, etc.
*less flu and cold being passed on to the native Floridians by the northerners!
Ah, for the good old days when these northerners leave.

Using bluetooth isn't much better in my opinion. When I'm driving I concentrate on DRIVING and not on the content of some conversation.
Because people want to listen to Christmas music for a few weeks. If it didn't make financial sense for them to do it, they wouldn't have.
Besides it was only for a few weeks - it's back now.
Sounds good in theory, and it works for you. But, a lot of those restaurants and grocery stores wouldn't be there for you to use and enjoy if the Snowbirds didn't come to Florida every year.
You should be thankful the snowbirds are here to give your economy a big boost. One in 4 homes in Florida are being bought by foreigners, 10% are being bought by Canadians. Think of what house prices would be and what the building trades would be like if it wasn't for visitors buying property.
Florida needs visitors and snowbirds, or your future would be pretty bleak.
btw....snowbirds are generally good people to have around, they usually have spending money and they are here pumping money into the economy for a few months of the year.....most states and countries would love to have that group of people visiting for part of the year.

I understand, because I was quite happy with Sirius too, until I found that for about $80 I could record about 200 songs that I really like, and that is my prime source for entertainment in the car.
I fall back on Sirius for a bit of a change. Sometimes I need local weather so I have an AM news channel button, and I have an FM station with good music and few commercials, just for variety.
For world news and especially sports, Sirius is ideal. I just think to stay in business, they will have to come up with a better way to supply the exact music people want. Using satellite and having a variety of stations is a good start, but, someone will come up with something better one day.
Think of a big itunes or jukebox in the sky, and you just request whatever song you want. Technology is changing so fast, and satellite radio is just in it's infancy.
I paid the same as JMonroe and you did for Sirius $75 a year plus music fees and tax = $93, that's about the limit of what it is worth to me.

Over the last couple of years we've bought two cars that have Bluetooth.
When my daughter bought her MINI, the salesperson paired her phone to the car during the orientation at delivery.
When we bought our Mazda CX-7, my wife and daughter had to pair my wife's phone to the car themselves.
Draw your own conclusions.
It does stink that they would take something away you like. We have a local station piped in throughout the office. It changes to Christmas music 24/7 starting around Thanksgiving. One solid month of the same 30 recycled songs will have you annoyed. We all complained but no one ever changed it (the IT people said the tuner doesn't pick up the only other acceptable at work station). I said just shut off the music all together, but then we would only have dead air for people on hold.
