Hey Driver, have you been affected by the floods up in Canada?

Hi bwia, thanks for asking...we are not affected by the floods at all, in the Toronto area. I am affected indirectly because my younger brother lives in Calgary. He can't get to work because the whole downtown is flooded.

He has a grown up son who had to evacuate from his apartment and he is now living at my brothers place.

What a mess! Apparently those slow moving rain couds are moving East and will affect other areas in Saskatchewan and around Winnipeg which often gets flooding.

It must be devastating to see your house underwater, and to have to replace a lot of possessions and personal items. I can't imagine how bad that must be....and then there are the fires in Colorado.

I forgot to mention that I much preferred th A7's conventional shifter to the BMW "Beer Tap"- but the BMW did have shift paddles on the whee; the Audi had none.

Its's all academic, as I have mutated into the Cross-Shopper From Hell- currently considering a 500 Abarth, a Focus ST, a 2006 Boxster, and a 2012-2013 Wrangler...

I have always dreaded getting on a plane and flying from Ft. Lauderdale to Palm Springs airport with a change in planes in Dallas. The security delays and the cramped seating on those MD-80's and Boeing 737-800's is a big aggravation especially when flying for 3 hours on one plane and another 3 hours on the other. But on order to see my grandsons, I've done it for years.

Well, finally I convinced my DIL to put my 12 year old grandson on a plane and have him come back out east to me instead. So, to make it very special for him (it will be his 13th birthday next month), I made reservations for the two of us at Universal Studios Resort - The Porofino - for 3 days next month and 3 days at Disney World - Polynesian Resort. Will drive up from Ft.Lauderdale to Orlando (about 3-1/2 hours). I just pray for the strength to keep up with him. So I'm footing the bill for everything, including airfare as a birthday gift for him.

American Airlines charges an additional $200 ($100 each way) to have him met at DFW's arrival gate and escort him to the Ft. Lauderdale flight gate. That used to be a no charge service, but checked backs are no longer free either. I had to pay an additional $40 to ensure a seat for him on that DFW/FLL flight since all the remaining seats were blocked out on the flight.

So he flies in on a Sunday and flies out 8 days later for his return to California. He was so excited on the phone this afternoon when I called him to tell him all about the confirmed hotel accommodations at Universal and Disney, I couldn't get a word in edgewise. This will be the first time he has traveled by himself - and only the 2nd time he's been on a plane.

Can't wait to see him and spend some very special time with him.

The package I got at Universal includes early AM admission to Harry Potter and Transformers as well as special passes that allow us to the front of all lines with no waiting for rides and admissions and unlimited use of all attractions and rides. I am feeling like a kid again myself.

Mike - This is a great trip you have planned. He is old enough now that he will remember this special trip you planned for him but not so old that he'll feel "too old" to do all the rides.

My wife and I both went with our families to Disney and Universal when we were much younger. I don't really remember it (though I do remember it as my first plane ride).

Fezo - Hang in there and keep fighting the good fight. Praying for you.

Only news I have to add is that my Wife and I adopted a rescue "puppy" yesterday. After much deliberation and looking around, she finally convinced me that we were ready -- I think she is right. Lila is a Golden Retriever/English Springer Spaniel mix who was rescued from a high kill shelter in Nevada. As I type this, she has her head on my arm with a look of "ok, you can pet me now."

Mike, 12/13 is perfect age for those Universal attractions. And you are right, prepare to be exhausted.

I keep meaning to ask FF, are you a volunteer fire fighter? I grew up around that (my father has 65+ years active, and at 84 is still a commissioner, goes to the schools, and even drives the trucks when needed).

and sounds like a cool dog. How old? Must be high energy, since I know labs are (I have a yellow), and a springer is another active dog. And with that combo, I expect she has an affinity for water!

Yes, that's what I figured. The live in LaQuinta, near PGA West, which is about a two hour drive to Universal Hollywood and 2 hour drive to Disneyland in California - but he's never been there - and Orlando is twice as big for Universal and Disney is 5 x bigger with all four attractions.

Universal just enlarged their Harry Potter area and they just opened Transformers. I just hope I can take it all on without collapsing.

    ...what about Dad...

I'm getting someone in to cook and clean and shop for him and take him where he wants to go. We are interviewing people next week from several agencies. Thanks for asking stick guy.

From what I remember about my 3 or 4 trips to Disney in Orlando when my kids were young (1979, 1882, 1985) was that it was being in another universe. You forget about the outside world and are transported to a sort of "Never Never Land".

I've never been to Universal Orlando, so that part of the trip will be more exciting for me than Disney.

From what I've been told, Universal does not require as much walking - our tickets include transportation in and between the two parks. So Universal will be easier on me than Disney. Worse comes to worse, I'll rent a cart that is motorized if my left leg (knee replacement leg) begins to bother me.

Mike - that is great what you are doing for your grandson. Hope you can survive the visit.

When I first moved to Denver, I had my son fly from CA (Burbank, LAX or Santa Barbara) direct to Denver as an unaccompanied minor. Guess the fees for that have gone up as well.

ff - great news about the rescue dog! She sounds great to have around.

Stick - no idea your dad was a fire fighter. My dad was, too, for almost 34 years before retiring 20+ years ago. Spent the last 10-12 years doing fire cause investigation - think the Robert DeNiro character in "Backdraft".

On a down note, the wife and I are now in Utah, spending time at the hospital with our daughter in law. She had stroke-like symptoms Wednesday night, and the docs flew her and our son from Montana to Salt Lake City early Thursday morning. We drove out on Thursday to be with them as they continue to run tests to figure out what's going on. We'll be here until Wednesday at the earliest.

Everyone have a great rest of your weekend!

    Stick--

That is great about your Dad - lots of respect for him still contributing. The older guys at my station had so much to teach us. Some guys wrote them off as being obsolete, but the fact is they did the same job without half as much of the technology we do today. Many of them still respond to the station for calls and attend training - they used to tell me that being around us younger guys helped keep them young.

I was a Volunteer FF outside of Philly for about 11 years. When I stopped coming home summers and it became clear I wasn't moving home after college, I stopped. I miss it quite a bit - never was able to get involved in Pittsburgh because of how much time law school took up and now in Seattle, the nearest volunteer department is almost an hour away.

The vet estimates she is about a year or so old. Ironically, she was super mellow in foster care and so far in her short time with us. She is very shy right now, so who knows how she'll be when she comes out of her shell.

Michaell - hoping for a speedy recovery for your daughter and safe travels for you and your wife.

Well, finally I convinced my DIL to put my 12 year old grandson on a plane and have him come back out east to me instead.

Spending time with grand kids is so satisfying. And adding Disney to the equation will be extra special for both you and your grandson. As to keeping up, don't worry--kids that age are very understanding and don't be surprised that he will be keeping an eye on you instead of the other way around.

By the way, boys at 13 are very much into cars. So if he looks eager and salivating about your E350 I would take him to an empty parking lot and let him experience driving for the first time. His mother would be upset but his father would be proud. Of course you should not try that if your grandson does not look mature enough. Enjoy!

    Lots to catch up on....

Michael, Hope it all works out well for your DIL. It is never easy waiting to hear what a diagnosis will be.

Mike - Sounds like a trip of a lifetime for your grandson, and the perfect age to really enjoy it - esp the Harry Potter part.

FF - Rescue seem to be very popular these days. We had lots of them in the old neighborhood, they were always nice and usually shy.

RB - I disagree about the beer tap shifter on the BMW. I get the impression the enthusiasts are making a big deal about it, but it really is a more refined way to find your gear - once you get used to it. The Impala with the old style shifter seemed less refined to me...I would move it all the way down and it would be in Low, then I would have to check where it was on the instrument panel...note it was in low and move it into drive.

The 535 feels like a jalopy these days, shimmy in steering and that can be felt throughout the car. It could be the balance, and just a weight....but, I have a feeling it is the tires and alignment. We have a few trips planned and I have a busy schedule, plus I don't want to fool around because the car has to be in good order for the 1500 mile trip to Florida in November.

Another factor is tire life, especially for these run flat tires. These tires have 25K miles on them, I understand if you get 30K out of them you would be doing really well. So, I shall bite the bullet and just get new tires and an alignment. Some people only get 4K miles, I have read 10K miles, and 16K or 20K seems to be quite common, so I guess 25K isn't too bad. To get the same Goodyear Eagle LS2s - which people have had problems with, would cost $510 each. They suggested I try a new Michelin RFT which will be $435. I would have taken the Michelin even if it was more.

Tires with tax are $500 each, $200 for installation and $250 for an alignment....I could buy a nice used car for what this is going to cost. Oh yes, I have to get around so I will rent a car for the day...$35. They offered a Focus, Dodge 200, or Challenger...I requested a 200 or Challenger....I want to see what Chrysler can make for $16000 - hopefully I'll get one. Maybe I'll like it and just buy one of those next time.

I have no idea why BMW is insisting on going with RFTs. My main concern is breaking down in the middle of nowhere on a holiday weekend. Being stuck in some tiny town and the local garage ordering 4 RFTs from the big city. Then the guy is going to try to install them with old equipment and will probably ruin the wheels.

For my next car, I would really have to think the BMW is far superior to the competition if they still use RFTs. They cost 25 to 50% more, they wear out a lot faster, and they could be a real problem if they do go in nowheresville USA.
(btw RB, BMW recommends you not put regular tires on because they aren't tuned to the suspension).

RB....thanks for the review. I'm going to the BMW dealer's test drive event on July 20. Can't remember what I signed up to drive.

Be interesting to drive the BMWs given that I've been driving the Audi for about a year, now.

Mike...hope you have fun in Orlando.

Driver....hated the RFT when I had my 335ix. BMW stubbornly insists on using them, though. They're better than what they used to be/ But, they're still a PITA.

Has anybody driven the new BMW 320 yet? Curious to read what people think of the new, detuned 180HP engine. I keep getting emails with sweet lease deals for one from my local BMW dealer.

Not that I'm the market anytime soon, however.

    Driver,
There is no way in hell I'd pay that kind of coin for tires. I'd put a good set of Michelin Pilot all seasons, buy a can of fix a flat and a portable air compressor. Done deal w/ 1500 extra in my wallet.

I agree with tjc. Run flats are hard and annoying. I had them on the Corvette. Had they worn out a little faster I would have replaced them with Michelin regulars instead of replacing the entire car. (retired, moved, didn't need it).

No matter what the Mfr says, the only downside would be no spare.

It may seem like a small decision right now, but acquiring that new puppy will end up being a life changing event for you and your wife. Remember that she will be a "puppy" for about 3 years and the experiences she has during that time will shape her for the rest of her life.

Raise her with lots of love and respect and she will repay you 100 times over and make you both better people. We can learn a lot from our dog family members. Congratulations.

. I'd put a good set of Michelin Pilot all seasons, buy a can of fix a flat and a portable air compressor.

Great idea...I didn't think about the can of fix a flat. All I really thought about was that I would need to carry around a spare tire and there isn't really a place to store it.

I wonder though, what they would think if you went to trade the car in. They would probably knock off more than the difference in the price of the tires, because they would suspect you don't maintain the car properly.

The 2008 bmw Cabriolet had run flats, but since I had to use snow tires they didn't get worn out. I forgot about RFTs when I bought these. I am glad I didn't take out the insurance policy for $1600, that would have been money down the drain....chances are they will wear out before getting a puncture.

From what I read, many people were having problems after 4k miles, and there are people filing lawsuits against bmw and/or Goodyear.

The one good thing about RFTs, is the chances are not great you will be on the shoulder of a 70 mph highway, in the middle of the night, trying to change a tire. There is a real safety factor to consider, esp if you have ever been on a narrow shoulder - esp in the left hand side, with cars going by at 80 mph!

RFTs will be considered in the equation when it is time for the next car. If the market doesn't improve, I might be driving a 10 year old Jetta (it won't be an Impala).

"She is very shy right now, so who knows how she'll be when she comes out of her shell. "

    FF--

We have two rescue dogs as well. Both were gotten in response to losing our other long established canine companions.

You are right to reserve judgment on the dog's personality. The second dog of our adopted pair was quite shy and retiring when we first got her, but she came out of her shell within a couple of weeks. Despite being a bit shorter and smaller than our other dog she is definitely the alpha now. Both dogs really vied for the role for a while, but our male has now--grudgingly-- accepted a subservient role. I love them both equally, but am sometimes distressed at how assertive the female can be. She is quite amenable to training though, in a way the male is not.

    Driver--

The Chapter on BMW in Engines of Change is very informative. If I knew, I had forgotten that one of the two half brothers who "saved" BMW from being absorbed into Daimler-Benz after the war was Goebbel's stepson, a member of the Hitler Youth and the Luftwaffe. VW--as many here already know--was developed by Porsche as the [non-permissible content removed] "people's car". In fact, Porsche's Jewish partner, was forced to sell out and flee Germany as the climate deteriorated. However, how many of you knew that Hitler eschewed his typical Benz for a VW FLT (precursor to the beetle) to travel to the eastern front in the hope of avoiding detection? It was his last car ride before committing suicide. What irony that the VW beetle is now synonymous with anti-establishment hippies and peaceniks dedicated to personal gratification preferably through mind expansion.

Many have also learned to love Japanese cars and car manufacturing principles. I don't know what this means although it suggests, at minimum, that Americans are a very forgiving people.

Better yet, get the BMW M Mobility Kit:

That kit is a great idea......I just know, if I relied on it though, I would be trying to read the instructions somewhere out in the middle of Nowheretown USA, in the freezing cold, trying to keep my hands warm with those black gloves the kit comes with.

It is definitely the way to go for the DIYer though, and in the right situation...like if you looked after the car yourself and are going to keep it for many years.

Tire Rack may be less, but I really want RFTs and the alignment done by the bmw dealer because it is too critical that it be done right. I would trust a real good indie garage which we have nearby, but, I doubt the savings would make it worthwhile.

I have no idea why BMW is insisting on going with RFTs.

I'll guess for two reasons - technology for the sake of technology and the weight savings of eliminating the 60 lbs. a spare would add.

Being stuck in some tiny town and the local garage ordering 4 RFTs from the big city. Then the guy is going to try to install them with old equipment and will probably ruin the wheels.

Don't most run flats have a range of at least 100 miles? Wouldn't that get you to at least a suburb? Even if you take Yonge St. all the way to Rainy River, you can turn left and get to an American city within 100 miles.

Some very interesting facts gogi. If we didn't get over these historical events and move forward the world would not be as nice a place to live in. Even if people don't buy Japanese cars they probably have to buy Japanese and or Korean TVs.

Even in Israel they use Mercedes busses and most of the taxis are MBs. We have friends who are Brits but they refuse to by German or Japanese cars. They could afford any car they want, but they like Chevs, so they have an Equinox. Oh well, whatever makes them happy.

Right now, I'm reading Thinking Small about the development of the Beetle.

I'm at the point where the Wofsburg plant is under the management of a German who worked for Opel/GM and he was the one to revive the factory and got the Beetle on the road. My wife and I both grew up with dogs - my golden retriever growing up was a rescue from the seeing eye academy who failed his training; My wife's family had several English Springer Spaniels.

Right now we are working more on building her confidence and comfort with us - like that fact if we leave, we are going to come back for her. After that we'll start focusing more on obedience. Now that our home life is stable enough - consistent work schedules, semi-consistent and planned travel, etc, we decided now was the time.

When I was a kid, I remember my grandfather (my Dad's father) cursing every time he saw a German car, especially a Mercedes Benz. He used to say to us that we fought two wars and lost thousands upon thousands of our young men for what? So the Germans could build cars and send them to the United States and rub our noses in them? I know I would not hear the end of it if he was alive today and saw I was driving a Mercedes.

That is typical behavior for Golden Retrievers. They are some of the most loving and giving dogs I've ever encountered. Over the years, I've had two of them They're great.

As mentioned, she'll reward you, and your entire family with unbounding love and affection.

Be assured that if today's cars could be shipped this way and saved the mfrs money, it would be done. It must not be an option for whatever reason.

I'll guess for two reasons - technology for the sake of technology

Speaking of technology, those of us who are technophobes might relate to this cartoon. http://www.tedgoff.com/mb/images/today.gif

    Rob--

The book I'm reading has a much more condensed (a la Reader's Digest) version of the VW beetle and bus story. The Germans hated the "beetle" moniker and wouldn't even use it until the 70s. I think my favorite part of the beetle story is VW allowing their US advertising agency to use these irreverent, self deprecating and humorous ads. One voted by a European group as the best print ad of the 20th century.

National Lampoon spoofed one of VWs ads about the beetle's ability to float. It also referenced the Ted Kennedy incident at Chappaquiddick. It was such a dead-on parody that VW got loads of hate mail and threats to no longer buy VW cars. I think VW successfully sued NL for that.

Those dog lovers (like me) will acknowledge that they give us a great deal in return for "room and board".

I wonder if any of you saw the 2013 ugliest dog? He really isn't that bad, but the dog that won in 2003, 2004 and 2005 has to be one of the scariest looking things to be called a canine. Check it out here: http://worldsugliestdogs.blogspot.com/2010/06/2003-2004-2005-most-ugly-dog-sam_2- 9.html

I would find it difficult to hug or cuddle it. He beats the pants (or paws) off all the other winners, hence his three-time champion crown.

"When I was a kid, I remember my grandfather (my Dad's father) cursing every time he saw a German car, especially a Mercedes Benz."

    Mike--

I know you--and all the other posters (like me) who are over 50 will also remember that "Made In Japan" was once a sign of chintzy products. That sentiment carried well into the 60s. Now no one would dream of making such a statement, particularly about Japanese autos, electronics or photo gear.

Best of luck with your grandson. I remember going to DisneyWorld on spring break in 1977. Even then it was a pretty expensive ticket--at least to a college student. Savor the moments and make sure you take photographs.

Our niece and nephew came from FL to OK to attend a one-week writing camp back when they were 8 and 10. My wife and I treasure the memories of those two summers. Both of them have gotten advanced degrees and have jobs that they really enjoy. Of course, their adult success had little to do with their visits... ;)

What I'm reading is a much more detailed account. It covers Ferdinand Porsche's history, Hitler's rise in the 1930's, economic decisions after the war, the split of Germany, a history of DBB - VW's first ad agency in America, war trials, Ferry Porsche's 356, et al...

The Germans hated the "beetle" moniker and wouldn't even use it until the 70s.

That hasn't come up yet. Thus far, the Beetle is called the KDF Wagen - Kraft durch Freudem which is German for Strength Through Joy or the Type 1.

I sure can't argue with you over that - "made in Japan" used to mean the same thing to us back then as "made in China" means to most of us today! But the Japanese were smart enough and honest enough to realize that and completely changed the way they produced goods by the implementation of some outstanding quality control, not to mention the fact that their engineers re-invented the Japanese trademark and what it stood for. Wonder if the Chinese even care?

As for my grandson, he pleaded with me to cancel the Disney World part of the trip and just go to Universal Studios - he was worried about my legs and my stamina and said he's been to Disneyland and preferred "rides" to amusements! What a kid!

So we are just going to Universal Studios from July 23rd to July 26th. I already got him his airline tickets and just paid for the Universal Studios vacation package at their Portofino Resort. They serve breakfast every day and the hors d'oeuvres every evening which is included. I just have to pay for dinners and lunches. They wanted $89 a day for the meal package so I said to myself that I could sure get dinner and lunch for a lot less than that.

But they have the nerve, after paying $1550 for a 3-day Club Package to still charge $18 a day for self parking or $25 a day for Valet parking payable in advance at check-in! Good grief!

We expect to arrive there by 10:30 AM so we can get a full day in the parks for rides and adventures. We get in to Wizarding World of Harry Potter an hour before the park opens on Wednesday and Transformers Thursday. That's included as well. They provide transportation to both parks continuously. We will probably get out of the sun to swim from 2:00-5:00 PM when it's the hottest part of the day, then go back after dinner.

Sure can't wait to get him here. My iPhone takes tons of pictures and I can upload them to my computer and print them.

We discussed Chick-Fil-A a lot months back. Has anyone noticed their changes?

They dropped the carrot and raisin salad at the end of May. They changed their side salad from broccoli & carrots to a thin lettuce with silly sun tomato dried peppers as topping. No love there.

The entree salads went up in price and contain less salad. They also changed the pictures on the menu board to display things different than the way they are served. The pictures of salads used to portray what came on the take home plastic container; now they are shown on white (plastic) china and the salads don't have nearly as much as the picture looks like it has.

The grilled chicken sandwich somewhere seemed to shrink in size of the chicken inside.

I called about the carrot raisin salad. The call center person said two of their restaurants in Atlanta serve the carrot raisin salad--no Chick-Fil-A stores. He said it's permently gone. I reminded him of when Coke was replaced by New Coke and they weren't going back to the old Coke; but they did in the end return to the original formula.

Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.
