Get it professionally appraised. You'll just get lots of contradictory data online because we can't see the vehicle or know all the details RE equipment, accuracy, etc. At a local car show you might very well run into an appraiser or a club/group that likes these cars; also you can scan www.hemmings.com. Once you have a good appraisal, then family members won't bicker and Uncle Fred won't be telling you years from now that you "sold 'er too cheap" and he saw one for sale for $100,000 dollars.
Sounds like a neat truck. If it's done all military-like, then your market is people who collect military vehicles, not off-road types.
Thank you so much! I will look into getting it appraised. Also, do you think Ebay would be a good way to sell the truck? Or do you have a better idea? Thank you very much!!!!
Well I think eBay is a big PITA. Yeah, you sometimes get very high retail bids, and you also get lots of deadbeats, scammers, etc. I think a detailed and sober print ad in Hemmings Motor News is your ticket. That's where the serious buyers look for cars.
You could also run it through a professional auction company like Kruse International, if they have a show near you. But you need to scan the list of cars they are selling, to make sure yours fits into the "mix" at that particular auction. You don't want to be in there with all foreign stuff for instance, and you don't want to go to an auction with the gold chain & merlot crowd.
Haha! "gold chain & Merlot..." funny! Ok! Thanks for the great advice! It's all very helpful! I'm so glad that I found this forum. I will get it appraised and sell it through one of the places you mentioned. Thanks again! God bless you!!
I'm planning on going to the Spring Carlisle show this weekend. We're finally going to get a break in the weather this weekend with temperatures in the low 60s. Last year's event was pretty soggy.
Cool, so you'll be able to make it then, Lemko? I hope the weather does hold out this year. I didn't make it last year, but I remember it being incredibly rainy that weekend. Now that I think about it, back in 2005 it rained that weekend, too. And I think one other year, either '03 or '04 it was rainy. At least, I remember one of those shows, wearing a jacket that I thought was waterproof, and learning pretty quickly that it wasn't! :surprise:
yeah, I got your email...I thought I had responded back to it. Sorry 'bout that. But yeah, same place/time, around 10 am. I tried shooting you an email last night too, but my internet at home is acting up, so I dunno if it went through.
I guess we'll meet same place same time? I hope there's a good variety of Ford cars there rather than a million 1964 1/2 Mustangs and four Galaxies and a truck. I guess Lincoln, Mercury, and Edsels will be there as well?

Anybody planning on going to Macungie this weekend? Their August show Das Awkschtfest (sp?)starts this coming Friday August 3rd and goes through Sunday.
I really like the ones that look like junkers on the outside (although some of them looked like they spent a lot of time achieving that look)... Is there a specific name for that genre?
I actually appreciate nice paint, so the look is not my complete cup of tea, but I do kind of like how it gives the cars a look of how they might have appeared in the hands of young guys in the 50s.
"Rat Rods" -- OK, thanks. I appreciate nice paint, too, but also like the rat rods, fad or not...
On a similar note, I wasn't alive then, but I'd bet that the factory paint on a 1957 Chevy (or similar older car) wasn't as smooth and shiny as the aftermarket paint they are painted with today.
Hello all, The sixth annual Hilton Head Concours d'Elegance & Motoring Festival is November 1-4, 2007, on Hilton Head Island, S.C. The event will feature 'track days' at nearby world-class Roebling Road Raceway, normally closed to the public, and sanctioned Hilton Head/Savannah Historics races with classic race cars; hundreds of collectible and rare cars, including Italian sports cars, American muscle cars and hotrods, and brass era autos; vintage motorcycles, 'the world's smallest car;' a multi-million dollar auction by The Worldwide Group; and a best of show competition including several categories of cars. For more information, visit www.hhiconcours.com Thanks, Mark.
On a similar note, I wasn't alive then, but I'd bet that the factory paint on a 1957 Chevy (or similar older car) wasn't as smooth and shiny as the aftermarket paint they are painted with today.
The paints back then weren't as shiny or deep compared to the cars of today, but believe it or not, in many cases they were smoother! I think two of the worst offenders these days are Chrysler and Nissan when it comes to orange peel, although sometimes it depends on the color and the lighting you see it in.
But to be honest, I've even noticed BMW's and Benzes don't seem as smooth as they used to be. I remember at the Philly auto show in 2006, they all looked good to me. I remember there was something about the Z4 I didn't like, but I don't think it was orange peel. I think the paint was just kind of shallow and cheap looking. Oh, and the unfinished engine compartment with the shimmed fenders! But then, at the 2007 auto show, the orange peel was much more noticeable on the BMW's. IIRC, I'd say the Lexuses seemed to have the best paint jobs.
There was a 1971 or so Valiant Scamp on the lower level at the convention center, with a paint job that actually earned the description "mirror smooth". Of course, it wasn't original!
I think those water-based primers and more environmentally-friendly paints they started using in the later 80's contributed to orange peel, but also if they paint the cars too fast, or put the paint on too thick (as in, rushing them down the assembly line), it'll exacerbate the orange peel. And I guess the only way to get rid of it would then be to buff it smooth. Something I'd expect on a Maybach (although the one at the auto show had orange peel as bad as any Chrysler or Nissan), but not on a mere mortal car.
As for rat-rods, I can kind of appreciate them. I'd rather see those old cars and parts put to use and some enjoyment derived out of them, rather than just end up in the junkyard or a farmer's back 40.
This was a 'concours' event, and the quality of the vehicles supported this. The album is arranged backwards, so the older and/or more high end vehicles are several pages in
It's hard to choose what I liked most, so many beautiful cars. Those Bentleys were impressive, as well as the 30s material, and that blue supercharged MG really had me smitten. The boats and motorcycles were also interesting, something you don't see all the time.
The parking garage of this event was a fun place too, lots of the attendees drove their old cars, including myself. The Eldo Brougham and the Triumph parked next to the big Buick were the most amusing as I walked back to my car.
I wish I had taken a picture of the rear of that Mercedes-Benz. The woodwork inside the van was SPECTACULAR! The entire load floor including wheel well covers were made of wood with metal runners down the middle. So nice. I actually met the guy who did the woodwork and he was (justifiably so) proud of it.
...I'll be taking my 1989 Cadillac Brougham, (weather permitting) to the Fall Meet of the Valley Forge Region Cadillac-LaSalle Club on Sunday, September 23rd at Peddler's Village in Lahaska, PA. The show starts at 10 AM and goes to 3 PM
It was a small show, especially compared to Macungie or Carlisle, but it went well. The weather was excellent, but it could've been about 5 degrees cooler.
There were a lot of interesting cars there including a V-12 roadster and a couple of V-16s. One surprisingly rare car was a 1937 LaSalle two-door sedan. Only 711 were made. The four-door sedans and business coupes were more popular. Of course there were plenty of '59s. Seems like every one of them survived as did every 1965 Mustang and 1957 Chevrolet. There was a beautiful 1964 Eldorado convertible in this really nice shade of teal blue metallic. There also was a 1966 Series 75 limousine, a 1974 flower car, and a 1977 ambulance.
Per judging, my Brougham is an Emeritus car which means it's received at least 5 first-place awards. In other for others to compete, my car is removed from judging to encourage newer members. In other words, if the same guys keep winning, others may lose interest. I do get a little plate to screw onto a plaque for participating.

Anybody going to the Carlisle All-GM Show this weekend? I've been busy getting my 1989 Cadillac Brougham ready. Hopefully the weather will hold - no rain and the temperatures will be more moderate. It was brutally hot at the Ford show two weeks ago.
I'm getting my '76 Grand LeMans cleaned up and ready to go, as we speak. Just came in to take a break after waxing it.
According to weather.com, they're calling for a high of 78 on Friday, 86 on Saturday, and 82 on Sunday. So it should be pretty nice weather. In comparison, when we went up for the Ford show on the 7th, the official high got up to "only" 94. I swear it felt a lot hotter than that! But then, we were out on the fairgrounds, mostly on the asphalt (or macadam, or whatever that stuff was they paved the aisles with), surrounded by sheetmetal. So it probably did get hotter out in the open like that.
My goal next year is to get my '67 Catalina up to the GM show. I'm supposed to get a big payout from my company for a bunch of vacation time I never used. Our current company lost the contract, and we were supposed to start with the new company at the end of June. But now one of the other losers in the bid (not my company, who is bowing out gracefully) is protesting it, and it's probably going to put off our transition until late October. I was supposed to get that payout in early July, and was going to use it to get some stuff fixed on the Catalina, like the top and motor, the leak in the transmission, and now the slow leak it has somewhere in the brakes. But now, I'll probably have to put that off until November!
Tomorrow I will have my 1989 Cadillac Brougham in the Cadillac-LaSalle Club's Grand National 2008 being held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill, NJ. It's located at 2349 W. Marlton Pike (Route 70 and Cuthbert Blvd.) Cherry Hill, NJ 08002.
Oh crap, Lemko I didn't realize that show had come up this fast! But then, it has been two weeks since Macungie! Wish I could get up there, but I just have too many other obligations. Hope you have a good time.
I just plotted it out on Mapquest, and its only about 133 miles away. Closer than Macungie, actually, which was about 190 miles from my place to that Burger King. Do you attend this show every year?
This show is held in different cities throughout the country every year since at least 1973. I joined the CLC in 1994. The Grand National was held in Lancaster, PA in 1993, but every year since I was a member it was held some place far from me. In 2002, it was held in Detroit for the 100th anniversary of Cadillac. I think it was held in upstate New York last year. This year, it's just across the river from Philly, so I'm definitely going to be there.

And yeah, as far as I know, same place and time!

Especially take note of the 1948 Delahaye pictures (especially the interior) and the locally-built Pullman cars.
Enjoy!
