2005 Ford Escape Transmission slipping when shifting

I've owned my 2005 Ford Escape XLT - 4wd v6 since it was new. Only 90k miles. Recently the transmission has been shifting strangely. Mostly between 2nd and 3rd gear. Took it to the mechanic and he drove it, checked to fluid and did a search for error codes. Nothing came up. He thinks I need a new transmission based on the history of these cars, Called around to transmission shops and they all seem to agree to rebuild transmission. $3.2 to $4k cost.
Could it be something else with the transmission?

Did the transmissions shops tell you what the issue is?

These transmissions do have a problem with broken bands but don't always require a complete rebuild. You should get at least 2 opinions from two transmission specialists. They can also do further external testing.
