Never gone faster than 70 km/h (43 mph). Don't think I've made more than one or 2 trips longer than 20 km (12.5 miles)

I blush to admit that that includes an hour and a half of idling time when I accidentally left the engine running while I was browsing the little shops at York Beach, Maine. The engine was so quiet that I didn't even hear it running when I came back to feed the meter, not once, not twice, but 3 times. I had a scare when I couldn't find my keys in my purse and I retracked to the stores I'd gone into. When I couldn't find them there, I went to the car to see if I'd left them inside the car. I looked in the driver's window. No keys. I walk around the car and look in the passenger window and there are the keys dangling from the ignition. It's then that I realize that the car is running. I also remembered that when I had gotten out of the car, that the button hadn't worked to lock the doors and (after thinking a couple of nasty words) I had locked all the doors by pushing down the driver's door lock. Maybe that hadn't worked either. So I tried the passenger door and it opened. Nice feature for us idiots. Good thing the crime rate is so low in Maine...
My milage ranged from 36.5 (see above incident) to 40.2 (driving home from above incident). Most of the driving was in Massachusetts in rural/suburban or highway.

I tell my wife, "I stopped for gas" and she says "again? that's twice this week!"
"But I put over 300 miles on the car. And it was only $23 to fill up"
"Oh."
My third fill up today...like clockwork, right on time...Friday. I'm still not wow'd by my mileage. I'm gonna increase the tire psi to 35 like someone suggested and see how that changes things.

I'm surprised at how consistent it is.

This time I drove more aggressively and had to merge a few times and tap into VTEC. This car is amazing.
Oh, dumb girl question...where should the rpm needle be when I'm cruising at 70 mph? It always stays in between 2K and 3K rpm. If it races above that...bad? I did find a few times it seemed to take some doing for the A/T to switch and I couldn't quite get it to gun (per se) when I needed to speed up to pass someone or get over so someone could pass me.
Suppose I could just haul out the manual.
For example...I usually look the rpm meter to tell when it should be switching (I hear or see it racing). If it's not switching soon enough (racing for what seems to be too long an interval) is that a transmission problem?
If you want to jump down a gear to accelerate, then gun the accelerator..it will probably take 2-3 seconds to realize what you're trying to do.
If you think you are over-revving, let off the pedal halfway. Cruising at 70 mph with AT should be about 2500 rpm is 5th gear.
6/18/06 -- 9.2 gallons, 355 miles mostly hwy. (38.59 avg)
6/29/06 -- 8.9 gallons, 293 miles rarely above 45. (32.92 avg)
7/10/06 -- 9.053 gallons, 299.6 miles mix of hwy/rarely above 45. (33.09 avg)
I can't believe I'm already over 1K miles. My gas mileage has been pretty consistent, but I've also been pretty consistent with the way I've been driving (very conservatively). I try to not to drive with too much gusto because gas around me is up to $3.20 a gallon! Blah!
I fill this small tank up as often as I use to fill up my '90 Accord -- with about a $15 savings in gas. Gotta love that.
I'm now at about 1150 miles and though my mileage hasn't been like yours, it has been incredibly consistant. Do you have ethanol blend yet? Everything in my town is now 10% ethanol. I've been wondering if that has been affecting mileage. I know it's been the darned weather...over 90 for nearly 3 weeks...and use of the AC. I still have 90% of oil life.
Yeah, all the gas here is with 10% ethanol as well -- there's even a station nearby that has that 85 octane for under $3.00. Tempting, but I aint gonna mess with screwing up my baby and the manual says 87 octane or higher.
I, too, have 90% oil life left as well.
While driving over the weekend, I looked and looked for Fits. Didn't see any. I saw a couple of Yaris's and Versa's. Now I remember why I didn't want the Yaris. Only comes in a 2 door hatchback. Not as cute as the Fit.
I find it helpful when people clearly post whether they have the Base or Sport model as well as which transmission. Having said that, we got a Sports automatic the day the Fit was released and were disheartened our first few tankfuls were yielding only in the mid to high 20 MPG range.
I immediately started reading this group (and having succeeded to reach 33 on highway driving more recently,) we realize our fill ups were often more minimal and hence misleading and other variables applied (variable top offs, engine not being broken in) we are feeling a little better and are hoping to see low to mid 30's in city driving (which is primary use by my wife here in Santa Barbara) and mid to high 30's on the highway.
Questions:
(1) All other things being equal (same transmission and driving circumstances) would the Base or Sport get slightly better MPG (there is a tire size difference, right?) In asking this question I am stipulating that the driving style will be the same even if the Sport model may tempt a heavier foot.)
(2) For anyone who has read this thread analytically: What's the best guestimate as to how much better the manual tranmission is on gas milage?
(3) This concept of the engine being "broken in" keeps surfacing. At what milage is the engine "broken in?" Two or three or four thousand.... or?
(4) What sort of "improvement" have people seen from their initial MPG range compared to later when the engine is defnitely "broken in"(3 or 4 monthes - 3 or 4 thousand miles down the road)?
Thanks -
Andrew
I have gotten 27mpg, mostly suburban driving with lots of short trips in July heat with the A/C constantly on for my first 3 fill-ups.
I feel sure yours will get better.
2. It depends on driving conditions/styles, but even then it is hard to give even an estimate. It seems logically that the 5AT in primarily city driving will do the worst.
3. The owner's manual says 600 miles for break-in, but that is for the initial period when you have to be careful about hard acceleration, etc. When Honda called me to do a survey, they said they consider their engines fully broken in at 10,000 miles.
4. I am almost at 3,000 miles with my base model manual transmission. I tried the conservative driving and light acceleration for the first 1 or 2 thousand miles, but I am back to my normal driving style. So despite my noticeable change in driving style, my mileage has remained a constant 34-35 average as the engine continues to break-in.
To the person who got 101 miles halfway through the tank, this wasn't the dealer's "full tank of gas" was it? The only fill unti the needle hits F, not until shut off. The posts here all indicate that the dealer shorts you about 40 miles worth of gas.
Virginia must have gotten ONLY storm silver bases???? :P
I know dewaltdekota has a blue one and will soon have a Lunar Mist...but I've yet to see any cool colors out there yet.
haha, yeah, I originally wanted to buy the orange one but the color and cruse control and keyless entry didn't warrant me forking over an addt'l $3K for the car... plus I didn't want to wait until who knew how long to get it in, so I stuck with a base model and it's in... white. Wasn't thrilled at first (wanted black base), but it's really grown on me now and I simply couldn't be happier. (the only Fits I've seen around here are the silver blue ones and I've only seen two)
I believe the difference in the MSRP price between the Base and the Sport is around $1,300 not $3,000.

Not miraculous, but totally acceptable.Fit will be lighter by 260 lbs. for the next 2 wks. so will see how we do. I have had more fun out of this car than any other purchase in the last 5 years (excluding the cost of adopting our dog).
Blah.
I purchased my Fit near Milwaukee 4/26. I check my mileage every tank, only fill up after 300+ miles and never top off. I have 4000 miles on it, 85% hwy @ 60mph 15% city
my first few tanks were 34-36 avg. after 1000 miles or so I have been and am getting 39.0-40.2mpg consistantly. I use Mobil 89 octane gas
Blah.
In the lil over 2 month span I've owned my Fit, I've seen 1. The last week, I've seen 5 here in NYC although I was startled seeing the same exact silver Fit sport as mine except it was donned with the Papa John's billboard on the roof.

Not my best so far.
I know the manual only calls for 87, but i read somewhere that gas loses octane from sitting over time, so my rational was that maybe the 87 rated is only at 86/85 and maybe the 89 is at 88/87.
my .02
When I drive by each morning and evening, I glance over to see if they have any Fits sitting on the lot. I simply CAN'T get over the number of Pilots, CRVs, Odessys and Ridgelines they have lined up at that dealership!!! Unbelievable. It's like a daggone truck dealership over there. Who is buying all these gas guzzling vehicles????? And they just keep getting delivered. Doesn't look like they have any Accords or Civics at the place but they might keep them around the back on the other side. If they are only coming in at the rate of 1 or 2 a month...I wouldn't expect to see too many around here.
Makes you wonder if many more suburban Americans will choose to give up their spacious SUVs for smarter cars? Or is this car only for commuters?
The dealer provided a full tank, and after that I got 42 mpg on the next tank, 40 on the next two, and 41 on the most recent tank. I went to different gas stations and stopped pumping as soon as it clicked off. I can't understand why so many people are getting such low mpgs -- lead feet maybe?
I actually saw another Vivid Blue Pearl Sport sitting in the parking lot, as I drove past my Chiropractor's place this afternoon. It would be too funny if Pearson already sold that Fit, and it's now living in Powhatan, too!
My curious little mind is wondering what they are selling their Fits for, those little devils. And why Mechanicsville decided to STOP pre-selling. Did they tell you why?
As I mentioned before, I can't imagine selling so many at MSRP really hurt them. Are the add ons really such a goldmine? I mean what do you think people are willing to pay for these suckers?
I'm averaging 28-29 mpg per tank, and now have about 1200 miles on it.
Live in Seattle, use 87 octane.
No unusual weight loads, just me and occasionally 2 or 3 passengers.
Averaging approximately 75% city, 25% hwy.
These numbers are very disappointing.
Does anyone have any ideas? Should I contact the dealer? I'd love some suggestions or insight.
Thank you!!
I'm disappointed, but compared to what I was getting in a much bigger car, can't really complain. I keep thinking it'll get better.
28mpg isn't terrible, but when many other people are getting stellar mileage, I'm curious about the wide discrepancy in experiences.

Average your last 3 normal tanks. By normal I mean not with 200-300 lbs of cargo, not over 90% highway or city, but a mixture, and not if you drive uphill both ways.
ME: AT Sport ~ 35mpg
As far as Mechanicsville goes, they're only being allowed to order one Fit per month. So... three pre-orders, and they're already looking at December, before they'll have a Fit coming in that is not already spoken for. They said if they had more coming in each month, they'd stick with allowing the pre-orders.
They were honest about it. They just don't want their customers to have to wait sooooo long for a car, which gives that customer time to change their mind, find it somewhere else, or (gasp!) end up buying something other than a Fit. Once that happens, the dealer is left with having to return the deposit and find another buyer for the car.
