When ever I mention to people I want to purchase a Toyota Tacoma, their eyes light up. Is a Toyota worth the extra $$$ compared to the Ranger.

Take a look at the 2001 Ranger with the OHC 4.0. It's speed, if that is what your after, is going to be in excess of the Tacoma as it has more HP (15 more) and more torque (15-20more). Current 4.0 has more torque but less hp.
I am sure there are sites out there for Tacoma but http://www.edmunds.com when you go look under the specific vehicle gives you a "whats new" section.
But, go look under the used vehicles you are considering. Compare Tacoma and Ranger and look at the Ranger ratings from Edmunds vs the Tacoma ratings. Ranger exceeds Tacoma in many areas, Tacoma is something like .2-.6 (on a scale of 1-10) higher in reliability.
If that is worth an extra 3-5 grand to you, then go get the Tacoma.
But also consider you get slightly better mpg on Ranger, better crash test results, better interior, almost yearly picked by Consumer Reports as the Best Buy in small p/u, rated almost dead even with Tacoma in all areas reported by Consumer Reports owners and picked by Four Wheeler as it's "top 10 values" in small pickups for 1999.
You should be able to get a Ranger XLT 4X4, loaded, with that new engine for right around 20K. You would have to option up a Tacoma to around 25K to get that kind of an equipped truck.
Just my 2 cents, it is your money. I know vince and I are well satisfied with our Rangers.

Don't just buy a name, whether it's Ford or Toyota.
A Mazda B-Series (Ranger clone) is a better value nine times out of ten if you decide a Ranger is your truck.
Toyota's don't have the reliability that they used to back in the '80s and early '90s. They're still up there, but, IMHO, they're not worth the premium they charge.
You can get the same vehicle, a 2000, here in Denver, minus the SOHC engine for maybe 18-18.5K
Look, Rangers are worth a look but I would wait for the 4.0 SOHC suppose to be out Sep-Nov this year.
Ranger is pretty good right now.

Base invoice on the truck is 22,560. Add about 500 for allocated advertising fees to get to dealer invoice price. Then, there's a 1500 rebate on Rangers. Provided you can get the truck initially priced at dealer invoice (which usually only takes a couple of quick phone calls with a Ranger), you're at 21.5K.
That doesn't seem too bad for an ext-cab, 4dr, xlt, off-road pkg, every power option, 4L, 5-speed-auto-tranny, flareside (or not), 4.10 LSD, am/fm/CD/cass, step bars, receiver hitch, payload pkg II, sliding rear window, keyless entry, sport bucket, etc... Ranger.
If you add the TRD package and the locker, you'd probably expect to pay 25,500 plus taxes and tags.
I'm assuming that one could purchase the truck for dealer invoice and allocated advertising fees (and any other little additions) would be roughly $500.
I was talking about the top of the line trucks. I just took out the TRD package and rear locker because I thought it made the trucks more comparable.
Do you think they're on a more even keel by adding the TRD package and rear locker?
Carpoint shows an invoice price of a fully loaded (every option) non-limited Tacoma to be about 24,700. Include the dealer tacked on ad fees and others at about $500, and you're up to 25,200.
If you got this truck for 24K, then you sure got one helluva deal. In fact, if you ignore dealer holdback and other incentives, that dealer just paid you $1,200 to drive the truck off the lot!

If you're talking about the screamer ads, they're BS. The dealer usually has one vehicle at the advertised price because they allocate all of the factory advertising incentives to that one car (when it's intended by the manufacturer to be allocated across a bunch of cars). And, that one vehicle usually goes to a dealership employee, close friend, or someone else who's got some connections.

with all possible options (including complimentary
CD player) for <$14,000. And now have the
best-looking efficient work truck in town.

It is obvious he knows little about the locker and its 5mph limit, and can only be engaged in 4low along with only being use in straight away angles.. Enjoy your sticker bud! You paid quite a premium for that locker! LOL!
The new V6 from Ford is going to stomp the Tacoma with 205HP and 240ft/lbs of TORQUE. I wonder if any of these Toyota boys know what Torque is??? along with HP/Torque curve?
Just a nusance coumpter virus, you know, that low stuff?
Then we will see if it is HP or TORQUE that equates to power.
My money is the Ranger which outweighs the Tacoma will drag that pretty little truck all over the place.
Had installed the front receiver hitch and gouged it in a few of the hills. Has a lot of fun.
Should have some nice Ranger articulation pics for posting when I finish the roll.
Also, I do not know what the mistique is about the jeeps. We ran into 3 of them and we were all handeling the bad spots better than the jeeps. They lost traction all over the place and in our opinion were not anywhere near equal to the Ranger. I took a big chunk out of one hill with the hitch and kept on goin.
Had to take off the winch platform to make it thru the rough stuff. Hope to mount an route the winch harness tomorrow. Today was a test of seeing how the hitch/platform handled.
Oh by the way, when we were playing in the mud, we tried to get the jeeps to come in. They declined.
Also, only Toyota in sight had an unloaded ATV trailer, and was parked down the hill.

ing I noticed different between the 87 and 89 and mine, I kept trying to hold it at 2500-2700 rpm in 4 low and I kept running up thier bumpers and had to stop. Guess my final drive ratio is better for speed up the hills than the older Rangers. I had to keep stopping and let them get ahead. Sometimes had shifted into 2nd gear in 4X low.
Did rev up to about 5 k once in the mud in 4X4 low. Ooops!
