Lease Return With Minor Damage

How forgiving/accommodating is BMW regarding vehicle damage for customers planning to lease a new car? I have read everything from, "The dealer will take it back if you are buying a car from them. No questions asked," to, "Not a chance. They will stick you with the repair bill and it will cost twice what you think."

My car has a dent that clearly is "too big." Say it will cost "$1000" to repair. I also want to avoid any shell game tactics where the dealer agrees to take the car back as is but just moves the repair bill into the price of the car.
