A/C issue

I recently took my Forester to the dealer to check for leaks of the coolant. I noticed the ac is not cooling as it has in the past. Then read an article about leaks. They found no leaks then tested the compressor and said it is "weak" . Suggesting I buy a 1000. compressor. I said no thanks and left. Yes I'm blonde but not stupid! This has been a very dependable vehicle but I've never had to replace a compressor. I know of two repair places in the area I will check out. Any suggestions?

The compressor can be checked and "low side" and "high side" pressures compared. The repair shop should be able to show you if the compressor is weak or not. There are other components that can cause this problem, such as a blocked/dirty condensor, bad expansion valve (if you have that type of system), low refrigerant, bad AC clutch, etc.
